Chapter 57: Chapter 57: The Ancestor Has Finally Arrived
The piercing blare of a horn came from a tanker truck that had just driven past.
He raised his wrist to check his watch. It was already 10:10.
"..."
He threw off the jacket covering him and got out of the car. He pulled his phone from his suit pants and discovered it was off.
After turning it on, he saw the battery was full. Missed call notifications flooded in, bombarding his phone.
They were all from his parents, Evan Ford, and Jaden.
There were also a series of voice messages from Evan Ford and Jaden on WeChat. He didn’t have time to listen to them, so he called Evan Ford directly.
"For crying out loud!"
Receiving his call, Evan Ford was ready to tear him a new one. "Where the hell did you go?"
Alaric Blackwood remained calm. "I don’t know where I am."
"What are you trying to pull? Are you running out on the wedding?"
"Like hell I’m running out on the wedding!"
’We’ve already registered the marriage.’
’Like hell I’d run out on it now.’
As he spoke, Alaric Blackwood noticed that all four tires of his Maybach were flat, clearly deflated on purpose. He had no time to dwell on last night’s events. He immediately told Evan Ford, "I’m sending you my location. Send a car to pick me up, and have someone bring my suit. Also, the procession to pick up the bride needs to head to the Kane family’s house right now."
"What the hell is going on?"
"We’ll talk later. Just get the procession started."
Evan Ford was getting a massive headache. "For crying out loud, you’re the groom! How are we supposed to pick up the bride without you?"
"I’ll get there as fast as I can."
Without another word, Alaric Blackwood hung up and sent his current location to Evan Ford.
He was in the suburbs.
Nearly a hundred kilometers from the city.
It would take at least an hour for a car to get here from the city. He wouldn’t make it in time...
Frowning, he saw a delivery truck approaching. He strode into the middle of the road, arms outstretched to flag it down.
SCREECH—
The truck driver slammed on the brakes.
The driver stuck his head out the window, ready to unleash a torrent of curses, but Alaric Blackwood strode forward and beat him to it. "One hundred thousand. Take me to the city. It’s an emergency."
The driver swallowed the curses that were on the tip of his tongue. "A hundred thousand?"
"Not enough? Then two hundred thousand."
The driver’s eyes went wide. ’Even delivering all the cargo in my truck won’t make me twenty thousand. Is this guy insane? Two hundred thousand for a trip to the city?’
"So, are we going or not?" Alaric Blackwood’s tone grew sharp.
The driver chuckled, unlocked the doors, and gestured for him to get in.
Once in the passenger seat, Alaric Blackwood called Evan Ford again. "Don’t send a car, it won’t make it in time. I’ve hitched a ride. Just bring my suit and I’ll see you at the Kane’s."
Before hanging up, Alaric Blackwood reminded Evan Ford, "Have some cologne and gum ready for me."
’There was no time to shower. He reeked of alcohol, and it was disgusting.’
"Give me your account details."
The truck driver’s hand trembled, and his heart started to race. "You’re paying me before we even get there?"
"Your account!"
The driver pulled out his phone, used facial recognition to log into his personal bank account, and then tossed the phone to him. "Just scan the code to pay."
After Alaric Blackwood finished the transfer, the truck driver took back his phone. He looked and saw that two hundred thousand had actually been deposited into his account.
He was stunned. "Buddy, what in the world is so urgent?"
"I’m getting married today."
Remembering the black Maybach parked on the side of the road, and then glancing at Alaric Blackwood’s clothes, the driver concluded that this guy was some rich kid.
"So what are you doing out here in the middle of nowhere?"
"Drank too much last night."
Alaric Blackwood had no idea how he’d ended up here himself. His last memory was of Jaden helping him into the car, and then Jaden handing his keys to a designated driver.
"You’re going too slow."
Alaric Blackwood frowned and glanced at his watch. At the truck driver’s current speed, it would take another hour to reach the Kane residence.
"I’ve got a full load of cargo. I can’t speed. Safety first."
"Get out. I’ll drive."
The driver’s eyes bulged. "I really do have cargo back there."
"Any damages, I’ll reimburse you double."
The driver slapped his thigh, and in the next second, he had pulled the truck over and was switching places with Alaric Blackwood.
Alaric Blackwood drove the delivery truck like a race car, pushing the speed past two hundred on the speedometer.
Meanwhile, Sophie Shaw sat demurely on the edge of her bed, dressed in a traditional red wedding gown.
Anne stood beside her, patting her shoulder. "Maybe there’s traffic."
"What time is it now?"
"Ten-thirty."
Sophie Shaw got up and walked to the window. Looking out, she still couldn’t see the groom’s procession.
A sudden panic began to stir within her.
The wedding invitations had already been sent out. Although she didn’t have many friends—Anne being her closest one by far—her WeChat list included old student groups. She had sent invitations to some former classmates she’d been on good terms with, and a number of them were coming to the wedding.
’If the wedding turns into a disaster...’
As she was lost in her worries, the door to the room was pushed open. freewёbn૦νeɭ.com
Bianca Kane walked in, her face grim.
"Director Blackwood and Mrs. Blackwood just called. They’ve gotten in touch with Alaric Blackwood. The procession is on its way and will be here soon."
Sophie Shaw breathed a sigh of relief and returned to her seat on the bed.
Bianca Kane lit a slim cigarette. Between puffs of smoke, she glanced at Sophie Shaw and said coolly, "You’re getting married today, so don’t pull a long face. Also, according to custom, your father is supposed to carry you to the car. But he hurt his back last year and can’t do it, and your little brother is still too small to manage."
Sophie Shaw listened quietly, remaining silent.
"When the groom gets here, we’ll have him carry you."
Bianca Kane took a drag from her cigarette, slowly exhaling a smoke ring. Leaning against the door, she glanced at her watch. "We’re a bit tight on time. We’ve already told the groomsmen: no games during the pickup."
Her gaze fell on Anne. "And the maid of honor shouldn’t make any trouble either. You’ll get your red envelope, don’t worry. The groom’s family will give it to you at the hotel."
The woman had, after all, spent many years climbing the corporate ladder. She held a high position, and her speech carried a certain rhythm and an imposing air.
Anne nodded, retrieved the bride’s red shoes that she had hidden earlier, and brought them to Sophie Shaw.
Sophie Shaw took the red high heels and put them on herself.
"Big Sis, the procession is here!"
Joel Kane came running up, full of excitement.
Sophie Shaw’s anxious heart finally settled.
However, when the motorcade arrived, Jaden and Evan Ford both got out of their cars. More than half of Alaric Blackwood’s circle of rich friends had come along for the pickup. A long line of cars was parked outside the courtyard gate, and a crowd of people stood around, but the groom himself was nowhere to be seen.
Anne stared out the window for a long moment, then noticed that the groom’s suit was draped over Evan Ford’s arm. Her heart suddenly began to pound. "Why can’t I see Alaric Blackwood?"
The moment the words left her mouth, she spotted an eye-catching orange delivery truck parked at the very end of the motorcade.
A figure jumped out of the truck and strode quickly toward Evan Ford and Jaden.
’The man of the hour has finally arrived.’
Evan Ford and Jaden exchanged a look, immediately pulling open a car door and making room for Alaric Blackwood to get inside and change into his suit.
As requested, Evan Ford had gum and cologne ready.
He frantically sprayed cologne all over Alaric Blackwood, while Jaden unwrapped a piece of gum and shoved it into Alaric’s mouth.
The groom had definitely arrived.
In the courtyard, confetti cannons went off, immediately followed by the cheerful music of the hired wedding band.
