Chapter 53: Chapter 53: Position Secured! Preliminary Selection for "Path to Health

Huo Yun’s bluntness was startling.

The other department directors were just as surprised. Even the hospital deans hadn’t expected Director Huo to value Wu Ting so highly.

The hospital already had a plan and procedure in place. The slots for permanent positions among the current residents had been allocated, and the official list was scheduled to be announced in six months. It seemed Director Huo couldn’t wait.

But agreeing would set a special precedent. What would they do if other departments tried to do the same?

Dean Tang personally had a good impression of Wu Ting, but he had to consider the bigger picture.

"Director Huo is proposing we make an exception for Dr. Wu Ting, offering him a permanent position ahead of schedule. Fellow department heads, what are your thoughts on this?"

Dean Tang decided to put it to a vote among the department directors. In his opinion, however, it would be difficult for such a junior doctor to win everyone over.

"I don’t think it’s appropriate. We shouldn’t break the hospital’s master plan for one individual."

The director of hepatobiliary surgery stated his disagreement.

"I agree, this feels a bit rash. As it stands, Dr. Wu Ting lacks the concrete qualifications to be offered a position."

The director of cardiothoracic surgery also voiced his opposition.

"He only has a bachelor’s degree and no notable research achievements. It will be hard to justify his appointment based on a single performance during a rescue operation. I’m afraid it will cause controversy."

The director of dermatology waved his hand dismissively.

Seeing several directors state their opposition, Director Huo’s expression darkened. Just then, a booming voice rang out.

"I agree."

Lu Xiong, the director of orthopedics, was the first to voice his support.

"I agree as well."

Director Wei Guoqiang of the burn department declared.

"I agree too!"

Lin Hu, the director of general surgery, was also in favor.

"I agree."

Director Zhao Jun of the National Medical Department seconded the motion.

"I agree, too."

Not to be outdone, Nurse Xiao Xixi added her support.

Seeing all these directors declare their support, Dean Tang was taken aback. He hadn’t expected Wu Ting to have the backing of so many department heads.

"You have no right to speak if you haven’t done your research. I’ve performed surgery with Dr. Wu Ting. May I ask those of you who are against this, have you even met Dr. Wu Ting in person?"

Lu Xiong was clearly annoyed, taking a shot at the directors who claimed to be ’considering the bigger picture’! ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

Xiao Xixi added in her booming voice:

"That’s right! I believe anyone who has worked with Dr. Wu Ting or been in surgery with him would acknowledge his skills. Giving him a permanent position is the only logical step."

As Lu Xiong and Xiao Xixi made their positions clear, the remaining directors who had yet to speak fell silent.

The director of hepatobiliary surgery frowned. "Even if we all agree internally, appointing a doctor to a permanent staff position requires a public announcement. How are we supposed to justify hiring someone with only a bachelor’s degree and no notable academic achievements to the public? Are we supposed to base this on nothing more than the personal endorsements of Director Huo and a few others?"

The director of dermatology added:

"Precisely. We trust Director Huo’s judgment, but surgical skill and strong clinical ability aren’t things the public can see. I think he still needs to meet the basic, concrete qualifications, like having a published paper or a higher degree."

Some of the other directors felt that the points raised by the heads of dermatology and hepatobiliary surgery were reasonable.

Tang Long thought for a moment, then synthesized everyone’s opinions:

"In that case, I have a proposal that should satisfy everyone here, as well as the public. Director Huo, didn’t you mention that Dr. Wu Ting has been working on a paper for the topic ’Combined Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine Treatment for Tracheotomy’? You said the paper is nearly complete. Why don’t we wait for Dr. Wu to publish it? We can use that publication as the concrete qualification for his appointment."

"Of course, I believe Dr. Wu’s appointment is a sure thing. We just need to follow the proper procedure. As soon as his paper is published, we will make the public announcement and hire him."

Dean Tang looked at the group.

"Director Huo, and all the other directors, what do you think?"

It took at least a few months for a paper to get published in a top-tier journal after submission. Most of the directors figured that would coincide with the regular schedule for announcing the new hires anyway, so it was a reasonable compromise.

"Fine. I think that proposal is feasible."

"I agree as well."

The directors who had previously opposed the idea all voiced their agreement.

"I don’t agree!"

Xiao Xixi was not happy. "By the time his paper is published, several months will have passed! What’s the difference between that and the normal hiring process? All the doctors present during the rescue operation saw how impressed Professor Shen from Jinggang University Affiliated First Hospital was with Wu Ting. If our hospital doesn’t recruit him, and he ends up going to Jinggang University Affiliated First Hospital, it will be a huge loss for our emergency department!"

Some of the directors frowned at Xiao Xixi’s words, but Director Huo felt a surge of gratitude. He offered a comforting word:

"Nurse Xiao, Director Lu, Director Lin, Director Wei, Director Zhao, thank you all for supporting Dr. Wu. However, since this is the consensus among the directors, we’ll proceed with this proposal. It’s settled, then. The moment Wu Ting’s paper is published, he gets his appointment!"

Huo Yun knew about the connection between Wu Ting and Shen Guofeng. The paper was being submitted to a journal that Professor Shen himself was in charge of, which meant the review process would be much faster than any of the directors here anticipated. For Wu Ting, this was the best possible outcome.

Huo Yun planned to have Wu Ting finish the final parts of the paper and submit it as soon as the meeting was over. That way, no one would have any grounds to object.

Seeing that even Director Huo had accepted the terms, Xiao Xixi gave a frustrated nod.

With that, the other directors had no further objections.

Dean Tang chuckled. "Then it’s settled. As soon as Dr. Wu Ting of the emergency department has his paper published and can claim a research achievement, our hospital will make an exception and offer him a position."

"As for the issue with his degree, we can arrange for him to pursue advanced studies at a higher-level hospital later and get his master’s degree then."

Tang Long had already planned out Wu Ting’s future development.

With the strong backing of Director Huo, Dean Tang, and several other department heads, Wu Ting’s future was bright. His permanent position was only a matter of time.

After Director Huo’s presentation and subsequent discussion, the hospital meeting moved on to the next item on the agenda.

After another round of discussion, Dean Tang introduced the final topic, a very important task for City First Hospital.

"Everyone, in addition to the recent mass casualty rescue operation, we have another important task ahead of us, one that will require the full cooperation of every department."

"Fan City TV Station is launching a new program called ’Path to Health.’ They will be inviting elite physicians from all over the city to serve as guests, choosing representative diseases with high public interest to create educational segments and promotional material."

"Each department will need to select a few physicians and relevant medical topics to submit. After an internal preliminary review, we will send our recommendations to the ’Path to Health’ production team, who will finalize the guest list. Following that, they will film and broadcast special features for each guest in turn."

"Of course, besides the hospital’s submissions, there is another channel for selection: a direct invitation from the TV station. The station will contact those physicians directly to arrange filming. This group of guests is, naturally, outside of our control. The requirements are extremely high, so don’t get your hopes up."

"This is an excellent opportunity for City First Hospital. It’s a chance not only to showcase our hospital’s talent and capabilities but also to attract more patients who seek us out for our reputation."

Clearly, the hospital leadership considered this a matter of great importance and had designated it a key priority for the coming period.

"Now, I need each department head to submit a preliminary list of candidates."
