Chapter 27: Theme

Almost curfew in the nighttime, Phillip and Vin both watched their colleague writing down notes on his own silently for almost half an hour now. They didn’t mean to disturb him and quietly observed their club leader do his own thing.

Shortly afterward, Cillian was finally done. Massaging his neck, he looked at his team with a smile.

"There, I wrote the whole thing down. Read it for a moment,"

The two pressed with each other while they got to view the contents of the notes that were filled with dozens of pages by Cillian’s pen.

They quietly turned the pages.

Seeing them halfway through the pages, Cillian cracked his neck before speaking out.

"Listen to me here, we might be the only ones who have gotten this information in our hands for now. And having something that only we hold is equivalent to opportunities. Of course, there’s a time limit for this. The more we kept this information, the more invaluable it became. Soon, there will be two people who might’ve gotten the same thing, and have no doubt it will continue to be like that."

Observing them still reading the notes, Cillian explained in more detail how they are going to take this stance.

"One of the benefits these things have is connections. Do you understand what this means?"

Vin stared at Cillian before replying.

"You’re going to sell this to them and amass wealth on your own? You will monopolize the information you have and make more money in the process?"

"That... doesn’t sound bad at all, but no, we’re not going to sell this off and exchange for money. It poses a lot of risks, and one of them is having more enemies. Oh, the deal with the guys who tasked you to do the job is still valid. We’ll continue the transaction as it is."

Cillian answered with a bit of hesitation at first, but he reaffirmed his resolve.

Vin’s plan sounded viable at first.

They’ll receive a lot of money for doing it, but Cillian was thinking of a long-term, foolproof plan, not only for him but for his club as a whole.

"What do you want to do about it, though?"

Phillip asked as if he was slowly becoming accustomed to Cillian’s antics.

He always brought all the facts to the table, but Phillip started to realize he always liked to leave the best thing for last.

Something to savor the information, making a suspense out of nothing kind of thing.

Cillian nodded with a chuckle.

"We’re selling this information for free."

"..."

Both Phillip’s and Vin’s faces slowly turned into surprise, as if their faces were telling him that it was crazy to reveal this information for free. The two halted from reading the notes and were about to retort back with concern when Cillian interjected.

"The information might be free, but we’re selling it off to the important people who will know about this eventually. We’re very fortunate to possess it first. Because of it, in exchange for our goodwill to help them, we’ll be forming a bond with these people."

Cillian’s easy-going voice trailed off as his tone turned cold.

"Have no doubt that we’re going to have enemies. Who knows if some bastards out there decided to make fun of you guys? Don’t worry about me, I can handle myself. But you two? I’m afraid so. And believe it or not, they will use you against me."

He pinched his nose bridge.

"That’s why we use these bonds to form allies with these people. Good, bad, dangerous people. We’ll use them as leverage in case we encounter trouble. Not only will we become allies with them, but we’ll also become more powerful, influential, and protected."

He looked at them full of naughtiness.

"Isn’t this sound so fun?"

...

Cillian leisurely sipped a cup of morning coffee on his front just like he wanted.

Sitting in a patio umbrella seat available on the outside, Cillian silently waited for someone.

Early the next morning, Cillian was back at the Academy Square. Unlike yesterday, this place had been lacking in people roaming around.

Cillian found it normal since it was still that early. Besides, he can use this to see if there are certain people watching his movements and have caught on to the fact that he possesses the information for the tournament.

So far, nothing.

And if it does, Cillian could observe who they were since the area he was in only had a few people, even with the morning guards already roaming around.

Suddenly, he spotted someone jogging in his direction. After a few moments, he approached Cillian with his usual stoic expression.

"Cillian?"

"Yes, Ethan."

Cillian saw he was different from a few days ago.

One glaring thing to look at was his missing bandages.

"You look healthy, unlike the last time I saw you."

Ethan chuckled lightly before sitting down in a chair available on their table.

"I’ve just gotten beaten so badly. Nothing serious. Now, I have something to do. If you can tell me the business you had with me, I’ll appreciate it."

Grabbing his coffee, Cillian smiled.

"I have information regarding the upcoming tournament."

Ethan seemed to have stiffened as he froze on the spot. His stoic expression broke down as he couldn’t help but ask with uncertainty.

"How are you so sure?"

"Definitely,"

Ethan turned silent before replying swiftly.

"How much?"

Cillian shakes his head.

"I’m not planning on charging you. Instead, I’ll ask you to arrange a meeting for me with influential people that you know who are interested in knowing this. The criteria are appropriately dangerous individuals and someone open-minded but extremely powerful."

He sipped from his coffee before continuing.

"I want you to give names and backgrounds of the people you’re going to mention and convince. Based on those criteria and my request, I’ll decide what amount of knowledge to give to you."

Ethan watched Cillian’s unsettling demeanor behavior but mostly because he felt he was having... fun in the situation.

Ethan didn’t know much about Cillian, but he was pretty sure this whole deal wasn’t fake and mostly advantageous for him.

Ethan let out a sigh.

"Look, I doubted you got the right person to do your bidding, but I can confidently make you meet some people I know or used to, or have an inkling of connection. Who knows if this is a way to make this little connection we had stronger somehow?"

Ethan then directed his gaze as if to pierce Cillian’s soul.

"But as you can see, if you are wrong about this, we’re both screwed. I got to introduce you, and you gave the wrong intel. It’s going to backfire. So how confident are you about this again?"

Cillian stood up from his seat and threw his empty cup into a nearby garbage can before answering promptly.

"Very confident."

Ethan stood up as well before sighing.

"Then, give me an answer. What is the theme for today’s celebration?"

For a moment, Cillian’s face twitched uncontrollably.

Not because he knew what Ethan was doing, which he knew confirmed some of his words later on, but on something.

’I almost threw up when I saw how cliché the theme is, but this guy doesn’t need to know my opinion about it.’

Cillian mused inwardly before answering.

"This year’s theme is Capture The Flag."

"Capture the flag..."

Ethan lingered for a moment before his eyes narrowed at the academy building that was as huge as a mountain.

He added.

"I suppose all of this has to be done today?"

"Yeah, I’ll be busy on the weekdays."

Ethan shrugged before jogging away, waving his hand goodbye.

After watching him disappear from sight, Cillian left the patio and headed straight to a store nearby that sells from tools to furniture.

Since he’ll be receiving additional money later on, buying the things he needs for his club has come first today. He kept dismissing it, and now he didn’t want to delay it once again.

Now that he was seeing the club’s future, many people would definitely walk through his doors to ask them about something.

At least, when they entered, Cillian wanted it to look presentable enough to appear really professional.

Soon, he bought all the kinds of stuff needed that made him broke again.

...

"Pheww..."

Wiping the beads of sweat that formed on his face, Cillian gazed around his previously plain club that turned fancier with glee.

His walls had a few paintings attached to them, and the curtains for the windows had changed into a fancy dark blue screen.

He even bought a kettle and a few packaged refreshments that consisted of coffee and tea, adding a few cups to the mix, and his club was almost considered average.

Now, they can provide beverages for their clients that were entering the club.

There was still a lot to do, but with Phillip and Vin coming to the club, the labor became easier, and the club was finally renovated after an hour of refurbishing.

"Well done, guys. Let’s clean this up, I’ll be expecting guests, you see."

"Yea, yea, you don’t need to tell us that."

Vin replied with a chuckle, fully in a happy mood because the commission they received from their very own clients belonged to them, according to Cillian.

Phillip was on the same page, hence they didn’t complain about doing a bit more work today.

For the rest of the time, they talked casually about kinds of stuff that weren’t related to school or any ongoing problems around the world.

It was just topics that their age was supposed to talk about.

And for some reason, Cillian felt... relaxed for the first time in a while.
