Chapter 24: Four Merits In A Day

Cillian was genuinely curious about the ongoing debate inside the classroom.

It continued even as he sat down nearby and was amused when he found out it was a case for ’insubordination’.

Only when there’s drama did Cillian choose to sit nearby.

Cillian heard a lot just by listening.

The person in question, Baron, was fed up with being ordered around when he wasn’t even attending the class. Only today, when everything was going well, this guy appeared. He goes into the classroom and creates drama for himself.

And because it has been pretty dull attending the homeroom class, Cillian didn’t reject such amusement.

Their homeroom instructor, Ulrich, was watching everything in silence. No emotion appeared on his face, his stance clearly implying that as long as the students weren’t hurt, he’d remain a bystander and let the students solve this problem for themselves.

For almost half an hour, the debate continued.

This Baron guy said his rights and went around his words, which made the debate take longer than he had anticipated.

Willow, the class president, fought him with words, and after half an hour or so, it finally ended.

She won the debate by ending it through Baron, giving free will to do whatever he wanted, as his role wasn’t even important since he belonged to the same group as Cillian.

But then again, Cillian rethought this weird situation deeply and couldn’t help but shake his head with dismay.

’I see...’

Probably not only him notice it, but Cillian finally concluded what the goal of this ’debate’ that Baron started.

He was able to distract Willow from creating a classroom meeting for the upcoming tournament.

Something was taken from Willow because of this wasteful debate, and it was no other than time itself. They were already scarce, to begin with.

Willow, a bit too late to realize this matter, could only click her tongue.

"Traitor... Do you not want to win?"

Baron, who had completely heard that, sneered as he remained defensive.

"I don’t know what you’re talking about, but who doesn’t want their class to win? I mean, for me—"

"All right, you can stop."

Aster’s voice resounded through his chair, stealing a glance at Baron, who shivered.

Afraid that it would escalate to a dangerous fight, Baron settled and returned to his seat.

Right after, Ulrich stood up from his place and chuckled.

"I know everyone’s busy at the incoming tournament, but we still have a concern about your grades. Some of you might be neglecting your studies. So to test that everyone is ready by next week’s exam, we’ll do a surprise quiz today."

"Ugh,"

Everyone let out a short groan coming from their mouths, even Cillian, since it brought back memories.

Ulrich can be a pretty warm instructor sometimes, but when it comes to quizzes and exams, he is a demon.

There’s always one instructor who brings you hell every time, and sadly, Class 1-A had a devil as their homeroom teacher. ƒгeewebnovёl.com

"Oh, there’s a catch this time. If you’re on top, one Merit will be given. If you’re second, one point. As for the third placer..."

Ulrich paused with a smile.

"Let me give you my gratitude by clapping for trying."

Most of the students let out a chuckle as everyone who wasn’t even dreaming of getting a second place reluctantly grabbed a piece of paper from their side.

Those who were confident about scoring and aiming for that place vigorously grabbed a paper.

’One Merit... Not bad!’

Cillian was one of those confident people.

A bit of a moment later, Ulrich had a test question on his hands.

"Everyone ready?"

"No!"

Ulrich chuckled before adding.

"Well, unfortunately for you, the question papers are waiting to be answered by folks like you. Now! For question number one..."

The surprise quiz started.

...

Steadily stepping onto the ground floor toward the front desk of the classroom where Ulrich was handing out their papers, Cillian made his way forward.

"Impossible..."

"Him!? Out of people, him!?"

"I must be dreaming! How come someone scored higher than Melissa and Willow?!"

Finally, reaching out to his test papers, their homeroom teacher announced.

"Mr. Sparrow aced the test with flying colors. His answers are very accurate, and it is a level that didn’t belong to any first year at all."

Ulrich looked at Cillian with interest before smiling.

"Congratulations, you deserve this Merit."

Ulrich handed out one silver coin, which Cillian hastily and greedily grabbed away from his hand.

Storing it inside his pocket, he turned around and started walking back to his seat triumphantly.

’Oh, this is a nice feeling.’

Everyone stared at him with wariness and a new look of assessment. Cillian moved his attention to the front seats, where Melissa and Willow watched him like a hawk, finding new prey.

’It’s very abrupt, but stepping people in their places sure is fun. Heh, heh. This is good, though it’s lacking... Well, I guess I’ll destroy them next week on the real exams.’

Cillian really loved stomping people around.

’I might get addicted to this. It’s really good to do this if you’re in the perspective of an extra.’

Cillian, who was foolishly grinning amidst the attention, thinking that he was wearing an indifferent face, silently sat down in his seat, still smiling.

To others, he appeared to be a devil sent from below with the hideous sneer he was wearing.

After the slight show, the class ended. Willow didn’t have time to set up a meeting with the class due to the limited time, hence she fell short of actually planning something.

...

’Pheww... I’m actually nervous,’

The Sorcery Academy of the Seven Family is the biggest land one territory could get. It’s also a landmark that each family could have.

It continued expanding, and more infrastructure continued to be built. Now, there are a lot of recreational buildings and houses inside the academy walls.

These places had become known as Academy Square.

’These look like malls and houses clamped together... Not bad!’

Since all Cillian did the whole week was walking around the school, he didn’t get to walk around the entirety of the academy. There was so much to see other than the stone walls, an endless number of doors, and solid ground. freēwēbnovel.com

’Oh...’

Almost instantly, his mood dampened since he wouldn’t have left the main school building and dorms if he hadn’t had business here.

It’s pretty much saying that he couldn’t explore the square because he’s broke as fuck.

At one part of the square, Cillian was planning on meeting a very particular person, and a very powerful and influential individual at that.

It was no other than Iska Befot.

Cillian already researched her background, and it was anything but passive.

Her parents were the biggest shareholders of a particular mana research that bloomed many years ago. Because of this research, sorcery became more pronounced and detailed. People feared and respected her, also because she was a genius on her own.

The outside of the main academy was spacious. If the main academy consists of ninety percent of the entirety, the ten percent left are the square.

It was well-maintained, protected land. From time to time, guards roamed around the area while students walked in and out of the buildings Cillian passed by.

The day was already ending, and the academy was closing its doors. The dormitory room for the students lit up, but this side of the place was brimming with blinding lights.

’Ugh,’

After a few more minutes, Cillian stopped and looked at what looked to be an office building. A three-story high building with dark windows that prevents everyone from seeing any activity inside.

Phillip informed Cillian that one of her men had come to the club room where he was supposed to give his answer today at the Unblemished Gang Three Building in the Academy Square.

Now, he was entering the same place.

"..."

Once he entered, he was received by one of the workers who worked under Iska. He was led to a very inconspicuous room on the third floor of the building.

Knock—!

Cillian lightly tapped on the door as he stated.

"This is Sparrow."

"Come in."

Letting out a cough, Cillian entered and saw Iska sitting on a high-end chair. Her back was lying on its layer while her hands were interlocked at her long desk, her eyes closed.

She seemed to be relaxing until Cillian got in.

Her office was too ordinary. No types of furniture or unnecessary design. Except for the cute clock placed on her table, everything was normal.

"We’ll accept your task."

"I see... When will I expect some answer?"

Cillian paused.

"Early next week."

Iska opened her eyes, darting towards Cillian, and stared at him for a moment.

With a nod, she grabs something from her drawer. Three merits rolled at her desk before she slid them forward.

"This is the initial payment."

Cillian slightly opened his eyes wide before smiling.

"Too much for an initial payment. Now that I think about it, the rewards you give are large as well. May I know what your goal is?"

Iska tilted her head.

"I don’t know what you’re getting into, but I expect the same information you’re giving to the amount of payment you received. It’s nothing serious but a fact, really."

Cillian indifferently sized her up before nodding quietly. He stepped forward, grabbed the money, turned around, and left her room and the building almost immediately.

Stepping outside of the building, Cillian couldn’t help but mumble.

"If she’s going to lie, might as well be believable. What’s her deal?"

Cillian shook his head in defeat, pretty tired of the events for today, before walking towards the first year’s dormitory.

He just wanted to take a nice bath and sleep to prepare for tomorrow.
