Chapter 221: My Children

Lately Ren has found his work as the emperor boring and repetitive. As a result, he has been spending more time with me and our children. That was a great thing for me and our family, but I wasn’t sure if it was best for the empire.

“Shin can take care of most things. He’s unmarried, has no kids, and loves the empire. He’s perfect for the job,” Ren said before laughing loudly.

That was his response when I asked him about skipping out on some of his royal duties. It’s been around 7 years now since Ren and I got married but Shin was still as single and free as a bird. Despite our efforts to get him to settle down, Shin had some how successfully evaded the topic of marriage all together. Even an arrangement by the previous emperor couldn’t tie him down. Shin now considers my children as his own and acts as their loving godfather.

...

When we arrived back at the main palace, I was greeted by my second son, Rem. Rem is more of a carefree spirit compared to Rou. He doesn’t seem super devoted to Ren like his eldest brother but to make up for that, Rem looks almost exactly like Ren. I remembered that I used to wonder what Ren was like as a child. Rem provided me with the answer of what Ren must have looked like when he was young.

“Mama...is back...” Rem said with a smile.

“Yes. Mama is back!” I said happily as I bent down and scooped him up into my arms.

Rem giggled happily as he hugged me. I kissed his cheek lovingly. Although he smelled of sweat from all the running and playing that he’s undoubtedly done all day, I still think he smells nice.

His vocabulary was quickly expanding, thanks to the royal teacher that has been spending time teaching him during the day. Although it was frowned upon at first, I still insisted to continue my work as a royal doctor at the hospital instead of spending my days raising my children. Surprisingly, Ren was extremely supportive of my decision. The reason for that was because Ren had a hard time dealing with Rou when he was a baby.

“He’s crying again. What did I do wrong this time?” Ren asked as his brows knotted together.

I looked down at baby Rou who Ren was holding in his arms. Rou cried a lot at night, and he would cry even louder if Ren let go of him. Rou seemed to dislike the royal nannies, so we were sort of forced to take care of him ourselves when possible. After months of the baby sticking to him almost like glue, Ren fully sympathized with the fact that I wanted to go to work.

“You should go to work. Staying with the babies all the time will drive you insane...and I don’t want an insane wife...” Ren said resolutely.

I could still remember the dark circles under his eyes when he said that to me from the lack of sleep that he suffered from dealing with baby Rou.

...

I walked into the palace with Rem in my arms and Ren followed with Rou following close to his side. After we got married, we moved to the main palace which was frankly too big for us. It was still too big for us when we had the children. The palace was outrageously oversized. It was a couple of times larger than the crown prince’s palace where Ren was living prior to this. As per custom, we had to move here and that was what we did.

The royal nannies bowed to us when we entered the large room that was now used as a nursery for the children and our youngest son who was still a baby. freeweɓnovel.cøm

“How have you been, Rung?” I asked as I peered into my baby’s face.

The nanny moved closer to me to give me a better look at Rung’s playful smiling face. Rung was like a miracle. Unlike Rou, baby Rung was so easy to take care of. He rarely cried and if he did it was either because he was hungry or he had peed or pooed. It was that simple when it came to taking care of baby Rung. Apart from that Rung was always laughing and smiling. He quickly made it to the top spot in all the nannies’ hearts and it was easy to see why.

Raising three sons while we both had work to do was not an easy task. Thankfully, there were endless support from our royal nannies to help us out. Auntie Chen now devoted the majority of her time supervising the royal nannies that took care of our children. As always, she was a very big help, and I could trust her to deal with many things. I could still remember the first day that I met her when I first arrived at the White Lotus Palace.

Back then I thought that everything she said was crazy and unrealistic. I was desperately searching for a way to return back to my hometown. In the end, I found out that she was right in many aspects. I am thankful for her support throughout the years especially before I married Ren. Auntie Chen would tell me how proud she is that I became the empress and has given Ren and the empire so many sons.

After years in the palace, I understood palace politics much better than before. Giving birth to Rou changed my life and my political standing in the palace. From being merely Ren’s favorite women and then his wife, I became the mother of the next emperor. The next emperor’s birth became my biggest life achievement in the eyes of everyone in court. From that day forward, I was treated with utmost respect.

Most people may have enjoyed the attention and the privilege, but to me, I just found everything to be unnecessary. The truth that I would never bother to explain to them is that I wanted to have a child because I wanted to build a family with Ren. I didn’t have the child because he would become the next emperor.
