Chapter 219: Our Baby

“Why didn’t you tell me about the baby?” Ren asked the moment the door to my bedroom closed behind us.

“I...I was just waiting for the right moment to tell you,” I said honestly.

“When did you find out?” Ren asked.

“About a month ago while we were still in the middle of war,” I confessed softly.

“You should have told me,” Ren insisted.

“But you were so busy, and you were out there fighting every day. I didn’t want to add to your burdens,” I explained.

“Regardless, you still should have told me,” Ren repeated his same opinion.

“I’m sorry, Ren. It wasn’t like I was trying to keep it from you,” I apologized sadly.

“I would have taken care of you better...” Ren muttered.

Is that why he was so mad?

“You’re so sweet, Ren,” I said before giggling.

It was probably the first time that I think I saw Ren blush. I couldn’t stop myself from giggling at the sight.

“Thank you, Rin. I can’t wait to raise our baby together,” Ren said as he hugged me close to him.

“Me too...” I replied before smiling back at him.

Ren led me slowly to the bed before he sat down.

I sat down next to him, and he put an arm around my waist before bending his head downwards.

“What are you doing?” I asked curiously.

Ren placed a hand very gently against my belly before he placed the side of his face next to my belly as well.

“Listening to the baby...” Ren replied in a whisper.

“I don’t think you can hear anything and it’s way too soon for the baby to move...” I said.

“Don’t underestimate me. Maybe I have a special connection with the baby,” Ren said persistently.

“I don’t think so. If there’s someone who has a special connection with the baby, it’s got to be me...” I replied stubbornly.

“Hold still...” Ren ordered.

Ren stroked my belly softly before kissing it tenderly. Honestly, my tummy was still very flat. I didn’t think that there was a clear baby bump. The bump was similar to what I would usually have after overeating a meal. Ren was clearly overly excited, but I found it adorable, nonetheless.

“Do you think it’s a boy or a girl?” Ren asked.

“I don’t know...” I replied honestly.

“What if you had to guess...” Ren said.

“I think it’s a boy. I would prefer for it to be a boy too,” I replied without hesitation.

“Why do you think it’s a boy?” Ren asked curiously.

Well...it’s just a feeling but if I had to explain it...

“Well, I’ve been feeling very sick early in the morning and sometimes during the day as well. I get headaches and I throw up now and then...it’s really not fun. They say that if you get very bad morning sickness then you’re probably having a baby boy,” I explained. Although there was no proof that the theories are true.

“Is that so? I’ve never heard of that before...” Ren said as he continued to stroke my belly lovingly.

“I want a girl...” Ren said with a long sigh.

Oh right, Ren did mention that he wanted a baby girl.

“We’ll just have to wait and see...” I said before I stroked Ren’s beautiful hair.

“We’re going to try until we get a girl. I want a girl no matter what...” Ren said wistfully.

I wanted to roll my eyes at him. We’re only three months into my first pregnancy and he’s already thinking of having more children. Despite the hectic and crazy things that had happened recently, I felt extremely happy and satisfied to spend time with Ren like this, knowing that a life that we created was slowly growing inside of me.

“You should stop working from now on,” Ren said worriedly.

I knew that expression that he had on well. This was Ren over-worrying about everything again.

“Pregnant women can work just fine. I’ll be bored if I don’t do anything all day,” I replied firmly.

“Regardless of what you want, you’ll be too busy to work for a while,” Ren said with a grin.

“Why is that?” I asked in slight surprise.

“You’re pregnant now so next is our wedding ceremony and then the coronation,” Ren stated while sounding completely bored.

Although I was slightly excited about marrying Ren and having our wedding ceremony, I could understand Ren’s depression on the subject. All these events were formal and very public ones that everyone will have their sights on. A lot of preparation is surely on the way and the event itself probably won’t be fun or both of us.

“That’s quite a lot...” I murmured.

“It’s customary in this empire. After it’s officially confirmed that you’re pregnant, we have to host the wedding ceremony and the associated celebration before your tummy gets too big. They’ll be guests from all the towns in the empire, officials, royalty and the list goes on and on. It’s endless,” Ren said before laughing softly.

“I guess it’s a big deal then...” I said softly.

“Of course, it is. The last time a celebration this big was held was when my parents got married. Even the current empress didn’t get the same honor as the first empress. Of course, I’ve never witnessed the wedding between my parents because I wasn’t born yet at that time,” Ren explained.

“Then after the wedding, we have a coronation ceremony?” I asked, trying to make sure that I understood everything.

“That’s right. The events are separate, but both must be held before your tummy gets too big. Which means that all the preparation and everything has to be completed before you’re five months pregnant, I think. That leaves us about two months’ worth of time to both prepare and host the events as well,” Ren said before sighing.

I heaved a loud sigh as well as I finally understood why Ren said that I would be too busy to work for a while.
