Chapter 210: Victory

When I came to I was laying in bed in Ren’s tent. The light stung my eyes and I realized that it was still daytime. I wondered how long I was out for. By that time, I had figured that I had fainted from exhaustion and overwork. Diagnosing myself wasn’t difficult. Glancing to the side of the bed, I saw Doctor Kai sitting there with a concerned look on his face.

“My Lady. How are you feeling?” He asked softly when I opened my eyes.

“I’m ok. I guess that I fainted?” I asked.

“Yes, you did,” Doctor Kai confirmed.

“Please continued to lay down. You were out for a few hours,” Doctor Kai said with worry.

“I feel fine now. I guess I was just tired...” I said before smiling weakly at him.

The old doctor nodded in agreement before his brows furrowed.

“Excuse me, My Lady, please let me inspect your body for a moment,” Doctor Kai requested.

“Ok...” I replied as I nodded.

Having him run a basic check was probably for the best. I doubt anything was seriously wrong with me anyways.

“Umm...please don’t tell Ren about this,” I begged Doctor Kai softly.

“The crown prince should be informed. However, I’ll leave it to you to do that,” Doctor Kai finally gave in after a while of thought.

“Thank you...” I replied thankfully.

Ren had recently recovered his good mood and humor since the war was quickly turning in our favor. He believed that the war will wrap up in a week or two and have already started negotiating the conditions regarding the management of my town after the war. “We’ve won! The enemies are retreating back now. We’ve won the war everyone!”

A messenger from the frontline was the first person to break the news to us in the medical tent that the war had finally been won. Almost precisely two weeks after Ren had told me that we were on the verge of winning the war, it finally happened for real. After around three months and a half of heavy battle and massive loss on both sides, the war was finally coming to an end.

Loud cheering erupted and echoed inside the medical tent as everyone shouted out in joy. Mou shouted and then started to cry. The doctors hugged each other and the helpers as well. Soldiers who still had the strength cheered loudly. Those who were too weak to cheer wept tears of joy silently.

“It’s finally over...” the young man that I had been treating whispered before tears rolled down his cheeks.

I glanced down at his smiling face as I felt tears of joy stinging the back of my eyes. We made it. It’s over now and that meant that soon, Ren and I can head back to the palace and back to our peaceful lives again.

“We’ll be home soon...” I whispered down to the wounded soldier.

He glanced up at me in surprise before he smiled at me and then covered his eyes with the back of his hand to hide his tears. I looked around at the people hugging each other while other clapped their hands. Undoubtedly, there’s going to be a huge celebration to celebrate the end of this long war. Although I looked forward to the celebration, I looked forward to spending some peaceful time with Ren a lot more.

“Back to work! The war is over, but our work here isn’t done! Back to work now!” Doctor Kai shouted loudly, reminding everyone that he still had a lot of work laid out in front of us.

He was right. Although the war on the frontline was over, the wounded still needed treatment. More soldiers are still coming into the tent from the frontlines. Our work here is far from over and done.

“We can start sending the injured back to the capital or back home now,” Mou said with a smile on his lips.

“Yes. I’m sure these men are happy to go home,” I replied with a smile.

“Thank you for all that you’ve done, My Lady. Your skills are phenomenal,” Mou said before he smiled widely at me.

“Thank you. You too. I’ve learnt and improved so much because of your help,” I replied honestly.

“I’m honored, My Lady,” Mou said.

We worked hard into the evening until we could finally wrap up everything. I couldn’t help but wonder if Ren was back from the frontlines yet. My eyes kept straying to the tent’s entrance in case he would come in to pick me up. It was probably better if I met him back at our tent though.

“Want to go wait for the crown prince at the entrance?” General Chang suggested.

Is that possible?

“Yes!” I replied without hesitation.

General Chang smiled at me before he laughed. I have never been to the front of the encampment before because I wasn’t allowed there. Now that the war was over, things must be different now. General Chang led me there on his horse because it was quite far to make it from the back of the encampment to the front.

“The crown prince, the generals and the soldiers should arrive back here soon,” General Chang said as he stood by my side.

Many soldiers who were fit enough to stand were also here waiting to greet the army upon their arrival to congratulate them on their victory. This long-awaited victory was very important to everyone. It marked the start of the return to our peaceful lives.

It was a scene unlike anything that I have ever witnessed before in my life. Slowly the dark and empty horizon was lit up by small orange light in the far distance. My eyes widened at the sight of countless tiny lights lighting up the horizon. That must be the army. They’re back!
