Around two weeks later, I began seeing the strain between Ren and Shin. Usually, I didn’t get to see much of Shin except for the rare occasions that we would run into each other as I travelled from Ren’s tent to the medical tent. It was rare for Shin to visit the medical camp and he rarely visited Ren’s tent either.
However, Shin has been coming over to Ren’s tent very often as of late. Most of the time he wouldn’t enter and when he did the two of them wouldn’t discuss anything serious in front of me. At first, I had attributed that to the confidentiality of their work. I only found out a little later that that wasn’t entirely the case.
“I told you before, Shin. We will not discuss that here...” Ren said sternly as he turned to stop Shin from following him into his tent.
The edge in Ren’s voice caught my attention. It seemed like the two men had been arguing about something on their way back to the tent and now Ren was putting a complete stop to it. Shin sighed loudly before nodded and turned away.
“Shin isn’t going to stay for some tea?” I asked Ren in a soft voice.
“There’s no need to trouble you for that,” Ren replied curtly.

Ren sat down on the side of the bed before he beckoned me over to him with the wave of his hand. I tucked a loose lock of hair behind my ear before I headed over to the bed and sat down next to Ren.
“Rin...” Ren said my name softly as he stared deeply into my eyes.
“Yes?” I replied, trying to keep my voice steady.
For some reason, I had a feeling that he was about to tell me something that I didn’t want to hear. Did something bad happen?
“I’m running out of options so...starting from tomorrow, I’m going to fight in the frontlines along with Shin and some of my other generals,” Rin stated emotionlessly.
I gasped in shock at his words. A lump formed in my throat and my chest felt tight. I couldn’t speak or breath. The moment that I had dreaded so much had finally arrived. I knew that Ren would have to fight sooner or later since the war had stretched on for a long time now without conclusion. This must have been what he had been arguing with Shin about lately. I knew that Shin had been trying his hardest to keep Ren off the battlefield, but it seemed like that wasn’t possible anymore.
“You’re not asking for my permission, are you?” I asked as I tried to keep my composure.
“I’m not,” Ren replied flatly.
It was what I had expected to hear from Ren; however, it still hurt and disappointed me all the same. In the back of my mind, I always knew that this day may eventually come. We were at war and there was no guarantee that Shin could keep Ren away from the fighting all the time. I sighed softly and closed my eyes in resignation. I had to appreciate the fact that Ren was probably holding out for a long time now until it was absolutely necessary for him to fight and I knew that he was holding out for my sake.
“Thank you, Ren...for always trying your best,” I said as I looked up into his face.
Slowly, I lifted a hand and placed it on the side of his face gently. There wasn’t much that I could do for him but pray for his safe return. Sliding my hand down from his face to the side of his neck, I lifted my face up and pressed my lips softly against his. I closed my eyes and began kissing him firmly, feeling the warmth and softness of his lips on my own. Ren let out a soft sigh as he put his arms around me and pulled me into his embrace.
