Chapter 189: Our Way
“Because you would have stopped me,” I replied honestly.
“You’re right. I would have...but you still should have told me,” Ren said firmly.
“I’m sorry...but I really needed to be here. This war concerns my town, my people...and you too...” I tried my best to explain. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
“If you told me, I could have better prepared for the comfort of your journey and for your safety here,” Ren said with slight regret in his voice.
“Ren...” I whispered his name in disbelief. I can’t believe he had just said that.
“If you thought that I wouldn’t allow you to be here, then it was your responsibility to convince me until I thought otherwise. I know that you have your reasons and I have mine,” Ren started reprimanding me.
“You’re right. I should have confronted you directly about this rather than going behind your back. I was too desperate to come along and used Shin and the emperor as an excuse,” I admitted shamefully.
“At least you seem to understand where you went wrong. I’ll deal with your punishment when we get back. I’m too busy with the war at hand...” Ren said sternly as his eyes narrowed at me in dissatisfaction.
“Ok...” I murmured softly.
“Shin reminded me that apart from being my woman you are also a doctor and there are things that you want to do. I’m trying my best to support you but having you under any risk of danger isn’t an option for me. If you had told me sooner, I would have brought more soldiers to act as your guards...” Ren said as if he was deep in thought.
“Thank you, Ren. Honestly, I never thought that you were thinking so much of me...” I replied honestly.
“I’m not doing this purely for your sake. You see, I’ve figured that if I keep you satisfied, you wouldn’t try to run from me again,” Ren said and for the first time since we met, he smiled a little.
“Ren...I wouldn’t run...” I said seriously.
“Your exactly where you wanted to return to right now. Aren’t you tempted?” Ren asked and I wasn’t sure if he was being serious or if he was just teasing and testing me.
“Not at all,” I stated firmly.
“Really?” Ren asked.
“Really. It would be good if I could visit uncle Gobei and auntie though...” I replied, although I knew that that might not be possible.
“That might be possible. Of course, after the war is over,” Ren said after a moment of consideration.
“Thank you...Ren...” I whispered.
“I know Shin and my father sent you here to keep me from wandering the frontlines of battle but that won’t do...” Ren said lowly.
“You really have to go?” I asked.
My heart sank at his words. I guess this is how it feels when your heart drops to your feet.
“Just like you really have to help out your dear medical team. We all have our responsibilities, right Rin?” Ren asked as he bent down a little and peered into my eyes.
I understood that well but still...I didn’t want Ren to be exposed to any risk of danger. This is probably how Ren feels about me as well. The major difference is I’ll be at the medical camp way at the back while he’ll be at the frontline of battle.
“But it’s going to be so risky...” I whispered.
“You’re my woman so the least you can do is to take my side instead of Shin’s or the emperor’s. Don’t try to stop me from fighting and I’ll let you put your medical skills to good use. Deal?” Ren proposed. freёwebnovel.com
“Ok...deal...” I muttered.
It wasn’t like I had another choice. I knew that Ren was compromising as much as he could. I smiled a little at the fact that I’m now allowed to work along side the other doctors.
“Good. I might just get Shin to babysit you at the medical camp as well...just to spite him...” Ren said darkly.
“There’s really no need for that! He’ll die of worry...” I quickly protested for Shin’s sake.
“Maybe he should...” Ren hissed.
“Ren...please be very very very careful out there...” I said as I hugged him close to me again.
“Don’t worry too much. I don’t intend to die here...” Ren said quite carefreely as he placed a hand on the top of my head.
I hugged him tighter while I closed my eyes and prayed for him to be safe. When I finally let go of him, he placed a small and soft kiss on my forehead. Staring deeply into his eyes, I felt like I could trust him to return to me.
“What about we have dinner? I have a meeting with the generals tonight. You stay here and wait for me, ok?” Ren said.
“Ok...” I replied with a small nod of my head.
“Food in the army is bad...just to let you know...” Ren warned.
“Don’t worry. I can eat anything,” I said with a small laugh.
After dinner, Ren left to meet with his generals, and I found myself alone once again in his large tent. Not knowing when he would return, I knew that I had to find something to do to kill time. I’m stuck here in this tent until Ren comes back. Going out isn’t an option unless I want to lose my head. He didn’t say that I can’t look around so I guess, I can do just that.
After walking around randomly in the large tent for a short while, I quickly realized that there isn’t much here for me to do. The tent didn’t have anything that I could use for entertainment and that made me wonder what Ren did to kill time. There wasn’t a book in sight and maybe that was normal since we are at war.
My attention was draw to the various reports, papers and scrolls that were sitting on top of Ren’s desk. He wouldn’t mind if I read them, would he? I sat down in the chair as my curiosity quickly took over. I picked up a report and started to read it. Some of the words were quite complex and I didn’t quite understand it well. However, I could make out that this was a report that described the recommended battle formations.
