Chapter 167: Reconcile

I felt a shiver run down my spine. I think Ren did mention something to that effect about his uncle before.

“Then...if Ren decides not to punish her...” I said as I reflected on Shin’s words.

“Stop! I did not tell you this for you to beg Ren again to have mercy on Jeely,” Shin intervened with my suggestion immediately.

“Then why are you telling me this?” I asked, not quite getting it.

“I’m telling you this so that you will know that Ren has already shown her mercy in his own way. The law is still the law, no one, not even the crown prince, can simply ignore the law,” Shin explained.

“I’m sorry. I don’t follow...” I admitted softly.

“You’ll see soon for yourself. Just know that Ren is a very fair and merciful person. Don’t you dare act selfishly and burden the crown prince,” Shin said strictly.

“Ok...” I replied. freewebnσvel.cøm

Basically, the best thing that I could do was sit still and watch what Ren would do in Jeely’s case. I closed my eyes and prayed that he would indeed have mercy on her.

...

A few days had passed by since my visit to the prison to see Jeely. I have not heard any updates regarding her case and presumed that she was still locked up while the court decided on her punishment. I knew that she would have to appear in front of the court for her trial, but I didn’t know which day that would take place. It reminded me of my trial and how scary I had been. Thankfully, I had Ren with me and on my side on that day.

As for Jeely, she would be facing Ren in court with him on the other side. I put down the needle in my hand as I felt my hand shaking. I’m getting a headache just thinking about it. Since then, I had returned to my normal life in the palace and that meant studying and training at the hospital. Shin’s foresight was unfortunately accurate. The number of patients, most of which were wounded soldiers, had increased significantly from before.

Many new faces were working alongside the royal doctors and me as the hospital quickly became understaffed and assistants or trainees were called in to help with basic tasks. Don’t lose focus, Rin! I took in a deep breath and picked up the needle again and began disinfecting it.

“Lady Kamiya, there’s a message for you,” a young woman said as she approached me.

“Thank you...please leave it over there,” I said as I gestured to an empty spot on top of a table nearby with my eyes.

“Yes, My Lady,” the woman replied before following my instruction.

After completing my current task, I opened the message that the woman had delivered. Unsurprisingly, it was a message from Ren.

‘See you tonight,’

I smiled and hugged the small piece of paper to my chest. The message was short and simple, but it meant so much to me. Without knowing it, I had started looking forward to spending my evenings and nights with Ren. With a smile on my face, I worked the rest of the day as I looked forward to the evening.

...

After wrapping things up at the hospital, I arrived back to the White Lotus palace to find it crawling with maids and many men who appear to be movers. I furrowed my brows as I watch them moving large boxes and pieces of furniture into the palace. It didn’t take long for me to spot Ren in the midst of all the people. His outfit really does stand out after all.

“Umm...what’s going on?” I asked as I came to stand by his side.

“I thought you might be bored of the old furnishing, so I ordered new ones for you,” Ren replied casually.

“I...” I mumbled, not quite sure what to say.

“I was told that these designs are very popular right now and some pieces were imported from other countries by boat,” Ren said before smiling proudly at me.

“I think the old ones are still fine...to be honest,” I said honestly.

“Then what about new clothes? I had the best designers and seamstresses make you some new clothes and also there are some silk fabrics that you can work with the tailor to tailor clothes of your liking later as well,” Ren said brightly.

By ‘some’ he meant endless containers full of clothes and silk fabric. My eyes travelled along the long line of men with wooden containers of clothes and fabric in their arms. I think I’ve seen this overly generous display of gifting once before from Ren. I sighed loudly. It was clear that this misunderstanding needs to be sorted out and soon.

“Ren...” I began saying.

“I did not forget. The jewelries are over here,” Ren interrupted as he pulled me along with him to another line of treasure chests.

“Ren...let’s head inside?” I suggested before smiling a little at him.

Ren nodded and followed me inside the palace. While we were walking to the living room, I tried to put together what I wanted to say to him. This is the second time that Ren has done something like this. The gifts are great and all that, but it really wasn’t needed.

“Some tea?” I offered with a polite smile.

“Sure...” Ren replied as he sat down on one of the chairs.

I prepared some tea and poured it for him before sitting down on a chair opposite from him. Ren seemed a little tired and I wondered if work had been hectic for him again.

“Ren...about the gifts...” I began saying hesitantly.

“Is there something that you dislike about my gifts?” Ren asked immediately.

“No...the gifts are fine...” I replied with a small smile.

“Good then,” Ren said before continuing to sip on his hot tea.

“The gifts are fine but there’s really no need for them. I think there’s too much of everything. More than I would ever need. Of course, I appreciate everything that you’ve given me but it’s really the thought that counts,” I tried my best to explain.

“It’s not uncommon for men to offer gifts to their women. Even I can do that much...” Ren said.
