Chapter 87: 87-Secrets

"I’m making sure my sacrifice isn’t wasted," the response was cold, yet somehow, Sheana could hear the concern hidden beneath it.

A concern the dragoness herself probably refused to acknowledge. Her smile widened. "You know," she said, leaning back against the pillows, "If we’re mates now, I think you’re legally required to let me flirt with you."

Aenyra’s eyes turned razor sharp. "No. Don’t even think about it."

"I think that’s how it works."

"Rest, I’ll check on Aeltharion. He wasn’t doing well last night."

The mate bond might have been born from necessity, but the love she carried for the icy beauty remained entirely her own.

And as she watched Aenyra leave, she couldn’t help wondering if perhaps, somewhere beneath all that ice, something had already begun to change in her dragoness and if Aenyra was developing feelings for her too.

Aenyra did not wait for a reply. She turned and walked toward the door, her long black hair swaying behind her. Every step was calm and controlled, carrying the effortless grace expected of an ancient dragoness.

Sheana’s eyes narrowed. The dragoness was walking away far too quickly, almost as if she were running away.

A grin tugged at Sheana’s lips. The door closed behind Aenyra with a soft click. She had kept her eyes on Aenyra until she disappeared. C

The room fell silent once more. For several moments, Sheana simply stared at the empty doorway. Then she laughed quietly to herself.

The sound came out weak from the soreness in her throat, but it was genuine. "Aeltharion, huh?" she thought.

Of course, Aenyra had used her brother as an excuse. The dragoness always fled whenever conversations became too personal.

She drew a line when the emotions in the air intensified. But things now were different. A mate bond connected them.

Even as she sat alone in the room, Sheana could feel it. A faint awareness lingering at the edge of her mind. It was warm and steady, and it screamed Aenyra’s name.

The sensation was unlike anything she had ever experienced before. She couldn’t hear thoughts. She couldn’t see through her mate’s eye, but she could feel her.

The distant rhythm of her presence. The certainty that somewhere within the in, Aenyra still existed, and it made her smile softened.

For someone who had loved Aenyra for years, the feeling was dangerously addictive. The dragoness had become impossible to ignore. Not that Sheana had ever been particularly successful at ignoring her before.

Knock! Knock!

A knock interrupted her thoughts. Before she could answer, the door opened. Princess Samahita entered carrying a tray of medicine.

When her eyes raised and landed on ger sister, who had not only woken up but was healthy. Relief washed over her exhaustion.

"Oh, heavens," she rushed over to the bed and set the tray down. "Shea, how are you awake?"

Samahita pulled her sister into a sitting position and hugged her tightly. She poured all her worries into that hug. freewebnovel.cσ๓

Suddenly, the image of the vision she saw came crashing down in her mind. She remembered that in the future, her sister was going to be the empress of lume dunstan while she was going to be ruined.

The month was nearly ending, and she figured she could look into her fall in the reality instability of the upcoming void days. With that thought in mind, she pushed the thoughts away and focused on her sister’s recovery.

"I am not sure of the details. Just that Princess Aenyra arranged for a fairy to see me and save me," she said.

"A fairy?" Samahita pulled back. "What do you mean?"

Princess Sheana shrugged. She had no other information. Aenyra had barely gone further into the details of her recovery. And if it weren’t for her soreness and the bitter smell of medicine around her, she wouldn’t have realized she had been unwell because she truly couldn’t recall falling.

"Is that fairy still around. There are more beasts who have been affected, and if she can offer a solution, it would ease father’s worries," she let out.

Sheana’s face froze at the mention of theory father. The beast was against anything good happening for her and her sister. He was certainly going to be pissed off if he found out that she was bound to Aenyra Zhen.

She kept her lips sealed and hid it from her sister, who was her father’s loyal lackey. "Father does carry so much importance to you. I just recovered, and instead of focusing on me, your mind is already working to solve his problems?" She found it ridiculous and wondered if her sister had forgotten the past and all the torture they endured inside the palace walls or if she just blocked it and pretended they didn’t happen.

Her statement made Samahita’s face froze over. Her fall echoed in her mind. She imagined her father’s reaction to the fact that she’ll lose her beast in the future, and the truth froze her iced heart and made it still. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com

The truth she had swallowed for years. The hope of winning a place in their father’s heart and the morale to complete the duty he assigned them died down.

She cracked a weak smile and shoved the heavy truth down her truth and didn’t dare let a word of it slip. "My mistake. I won’t talk about him, okay," she comforted Sheana and brushed her hair lovingly.

Princess Sheana blinked. Taken aback by her sister’s strange attitude. "What is wrong with you? Why aren’t you defending father like you normally do?" She instantly sensed something was wrong with her twin.

"I’m agreeing with you. Is that wrong?" Samahita pinched her cheek playfully. "I almost lost you. That made me realize that while we are out here risking our lives... he’s living his to the fullest in the palace. It’s not worth it," she said, speaking against her father for the first time.

Silence settled in as the two sisters held their secrets deep within their hearts.

"I’m relieved you see things my way," Sheana leaned her head down and rested it on Samahita’s chest. "When we fulfil the prophecy and become the rulers of the new world. I will be good to you," she innocently said.

That promise clawed deeply in Samahita’s heart. She remembered seeing Sheana crowned and standing at the top of the world with the Zhen, Auryn, and Noxveil families supporting her reign, and she was a nobody in the crowd, looking up at her.

"I’ll hold you... to that promise," her voice cracked.

Sheana herself had forgotten that she, too, had seen a revised version of the prophecy. She hugged her sister tightly. ’I hope to find a chance to tell you about the mate bond,’ she inwardly thought.

A bond that made Sheana’s heart beat just a little faster. For the first time since waking, hope quietly settled inside her chest. Perhaps Aenyra had not fallen in love with her. Perhaps she wasn’t even close to getting that love. But the ice around the dragoness’s heart was no longer untouched since she was willing to be bound to her to save her.

And sometimes, all it took was the smallest crack for spring to eventually find its way inside. ’I hope that you can learn to love me too, Aenyra,’ she prayed.
