Chapter 35: New Mission?!
While Darius waited for the system’s response, he couldn’t help but rethink everything carefully.
’The first time, I left before the mission ended and nobody noticed me. But if I keep going to the Demon Suppression Office from now on, people will eventually recognize me once my image starts spreading around.’
Darius scratched his head in annoyance.
’There’s also the Tiger Gang standing behind that demon, not to mention the man I killed tonight. Moon already warned me about several things regarding them.’
Darius felt no remorse toward the person he killed. As long as the system panel reacted and revealed evil deeds such as feeding humans to demons, murder, and other atrocities, he genuinely felt those people were worse than beasts.
His problem wasn’t guilt.
It was the consequences.
Although he had successfully shifted much of the attention toward the Demon Suppression Office and temporarily gained their protection, Darius understood clearly that such protection wouldn’t last forever.
He needed greater funds, more services, and especially stronger protection if he wanted the Immortal Pavilion to survive inside the outer city.
Asking the city itself for protection was out of the question. Forget the terrifying price such a thing would require, Darius was almost certain the system would never allow it in the first place.
While he was deep in thought, the system’s robotic voice suddenly sounded inside his mind.
"I have reviewed the host’s concerns. However, the host is overthinking the situation."
"The Immortal Pavilion does not need members to support it. Rather, it is those members who need the pavilion in order to grow stronger and shine in this world."
"Our services are top-notch and will only become more efficient and valuable with time."
"The host should not worry whether future visitors become members or not. As long as they possess a functioning brain and basic common sense, they would cross mountains and seas just to join the pavilion."
Hiss!
Darius sucked in a cold breath after hearing the system’s words.
It was the first time he sensed something resembling arrogance from the system itself, as though it possessed absolute confidence in every statement it made.
’Seems like I really am overthinking things.’
Darius quickly calmed down.
At the end of the day, the system wasn’t wrong. The pavilion’s services were indeed terrifyingly valuable compared to anything he had seen so far.
Only now did he realize that he wasn’t running some ordinary shop.
He was running a mystical pavilion backed by an absurdly mysterious system.
As Darius slowly relaxed and closed his eyes, another system panel suddenly appeared before him.
[ Host has provoked several forces through his actions and growing influence. ]
[ Mission Issued: Find a strong and upright individual to become the guardian of the pavilion. ]
[ Reward upon completion: ??? ]
Darius’s eyes widened instantly.
’Another mission already?’ freewёbnoνel.com
He hadn’t even completed the previous mission involving the required amount of spirit stones and gold coins, yet another mission had suddenly appeared before him.
And this one looked even more troublesome.
’A guardian? What exactly does that even mean?’
Naturally, Darius understood the concept itself, but throughout all the novels he had read in the past, guardians were usually ancient beasts or mysterious experts with sealed powers pretending to act profound.
The sudden responsibility genuinely made him feel a headache coming.
Taking a deep breath, Darius immediately asked, "Is there a required realm, age, or level of talent?"
"Yes."
"Realm and age are not important. However, the guardian’s talent cannot be below S-rank awakening."
For a moment, Darius felt the air around him disappear completely.
His mouth slowly opened in disbelief.
Before he could even complain, the system’s voice sounded once again.
"The host should not worry. The system will temporarily provide an ability capable of checking the talents of others."
Hearing this, Darius finally relaxed slightly.
He already understood one thing clearly about the system.
Nothing came for free.
If he wanted power, he had to work for it.
If he wanted missions on the board, he needed to personally establish the pavilion’s reputation first.
Although the system granted him absurd opportunities that even the strongest experts in this world could never imagine, it was far from a charity.
Pay and receive.
That was the true philosophy of the Immortal Pavilion in Darius’s eyes.
’Looks like I’ll need to visit one of the newcomer gatherings near the Sanctuary Gates soon.’
Darius silently made up his mind.
Although he already had countless matters to deal with tomorrow, especially with the possibility of new customers arriving after today’s news spread, he still couldn’t ignore this mission.
Suddenly, Darius recalled the cultivation technique Albredo had given him earlier: Golden Bell Shield.
He was originally planning to study it further tonight and deepen his understanding of cultivation itself.
However...
’Let’s leave it for tomorrow.’
Darius stopped midway through taking the manual out.
Despite his excitement toward cultivation, the injuries from tonight’s battle still hadn’t fully healed, and after everything that happened today, mental exhaustion finally began catching up to him.
It didn’t take long before his eyelids gradually became heavier.
Soon enough, sleep overtook him completely.
