Chapter 94: Need Answers
Kaden’s POV
She didn’t waste a second. The moment I let her go, Stephanie turned and practically fled the room. The door slammed shut behind her with a loud bang.
Silence.
For a few seconds, I just stood there staring at the closed door, my body frozen.
Then suddenly, a wave of pure rage exploded inside me.
"What the hell was that?!" I roared to the empty room.
My foot lashed out, kicking a wooden stool and sending it flying across the room. It crashed hard against the wall and shattered into broken pieces. My chest rose and fell violently as I dragged both hands through my hair, pacing across the floor like a caged animal.
I had no idea what had just happened.
My wolf was just as confused and upset. I don’t know, he growled loudly inside my head, his voice shaking. I have never felt anything like that before.
Neither had I.
The moment I touched her face, something had happened. Something odd. Something completely wrong. I had felt a powerful pull. It wasn’t just attraction, and it wasn’t just lust. It was something much deeper—something that made my wolf want to get closer to her instead of backing away.
It made absolutely no sense. She was just a maid. A servant. Nothing more. So why did my heart react that way? Why did my wolf act so crazy?
I clenched my jaw, my frown deepening. "No," I shook my head violently, trying to clear my thoughts. "No."
I refused to even think about it.
I turned back toward the bed, looking at Rebecca. She lay exactly where she had been before, pale and motionless beneath the blankets. Looking at her instantly filled me with a strange sense of relief. This was Rebecca. This was the woman who was consuming my thoughts and ruining my life, not some random maid.
I walked back to the bedside and stared down at her sleeping face. For a brief second, a sharp twist of guilt hit my chest, but I quickly pushed it away.
"Wake up," I whispered, my voice rough. My fingers brushed gently against her hair. "You need to wake up."
The machines just continued their endless, robotic beeping. She didn’t move. She never moved.
My jaw tightened. Without another word, I turned around and left the room.
A few minutes later, I entered my private chambers. The doors closed behind me, shutting out the rest of the world. I kicked off my heavy boots and sat down heavily on the edge of the bed. Pure exhaustion settled over me like a physical weight. The trial, Kane, the choker, that strange attraction to Stephanie—everything was turning into one giant headache.
I rubbed both hands over my face, trying to stop my mind from spinning. Then, my eyes landed on the silver frame sitting on my bedside table.
Helen.
A slow, painful breath left my chest. I picked up the photograph, looking at her beautiful smile staring back at me. It was the smile that used to calm every single storm inside me. The smile that was now gone forever.
"I’m losing my mind, Helen," I admitted quietly to the quiet room.
I stared at her picture for several long seconds, waiting for the familiar peace to wash over me. But then, something strange and terrifying happened. For the first time since she died, when I looked at Helen’s face... another face flashed through my mind.
Brown eyes. Defiant eyes. Furious eyes.
Stephanie’s eyes.
I froze completely. The photograph nearly slipped from my fingers.
"No!" I immediately stood up from the bed, my heartbeat speeding up in panic.
Why was I thinking about her again? Why couldn’t I get her out of my head? I looked back down at Helen’s picture, trying to focus, trying to remember her soft voice, her sweet smile, her familiar scent. But every single time I closed my eyes, all I saw was that maid standing in front of me. Fearless. Defiant. Looking at me as if she knew every ugly, dark secret I had ever buried.
A cold chill ran straight down my spine, and the fear inside me grew until I couldn’t take it anymore. I needed answers, and I needed them fast.
Opening the mind link, I snapped into my Beta’s mind. ’Logan, get the seer immediately.’
"Right away, Alpha King," Logan’s voice snapped back through the mind link, sharp and ready. "I will find her now."
I cut the link without another word, my hand still shaking slightly as I set Helen’s picture back on the table. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
I hated seers. I hated visionaries, witches, and anyone who claimed they could see into the future or look into a person’s soul. Twice in my life, prominent seers had given me fake prophecies, and both times they had been completely wrong.
The first time was years ago, when a grand seer told me that my fated mate would be a highly gifted, powerful werewolf from a royal bloodline. But then I found Helen. Helen was a completely normal human, and she had no special gifts at all. She was just a sweet girl who captured my heart. Such terrible lies.
The second time was right before the great tournament for the throne. Another visionary looked me in the eye and told me I would not win the Alpha King fight. He swore on his life that I would die in that bloody arena. But I fought, I bled, and I won. And look who is the Alpha King now.
Because of those lies, I had banned seers from giving unasked advice in my territory. I didn’t trust them. But right now, as my wolf continued to pace and howl inside my head over a mere maid, I had no choice. I was desperate. I needed answers that my own logic couldn’t give me.
Only a few moments later, Logan’s voice popped back into my head. ’Alpha King, the pack seer is in the throne room waiting for you.’
I didn’t even bother putting my heavy boots back on. I just slid into a pair of slippers, kept my casual clothes on, and walked out of my chambers. My steps were fast and loud as I moved down the long hallways toward the grand throne room.
When I pushed the heavy doors open, the room was dark, lit only by the faint light coming through the high windows. Standing in the center of the room was the pack seer. She was an old woman, her hair completely grey, wrapped in a dark shawl.
The moment she turned and her eyes landed on me, she didn’t even bow. Instead, she let out a soft, chilling breath.
"Alpha King," she spoke softly. "Why are you seeking the living among the dead?"
