Chapter 49: Tutoring...?

"Tristan..."

"I don’t want to hear it."

They were stuck in traffic, still shaking from what they’d witnessed. Any lingering doubts about why he was the sole survivor of the Tartarus-B expedition had vanished the moment they saw what he did to the guardian.

"What do you think that woman is?"

Yeula tapped at her tablet, pulling up CCTV footage from the escape incident. She’d been reviewing everything she could access with her investigator clearance, cameras inside the building, outside, even feeds from nearby stores.

"There’s no sign of any woman present at all."

"Then she wasn’t bluffing about being able to kill us from a distance."

"Probably."

Neither of them knew Sarael had been hiding inside Ronan’s shadow the entire time. For all they could tell, she might have been across the country when she left that laugh on the recording.

"Guess we don’t have a choice."

Yeula set the tablet down.

"We’re traitors now, whether we like it or not."

Ronan and Sarael made it back to the shack after a quick stop at a convenience store, where he’d picked up a power bank and charger and made sure to juice it up before heading out.

Sarael, meanwhile, had loaded up on even more snacks and was now parked at the dining table, happily working her way through the haul while Ronan scrolled through his contacts.

GodBound: Keep an eye on those two you paired me with.

Zero: Took a liking to them?

GodBound: They’re effective. Pair me with them more often. Got it?

Zero: Fine by me, as long as the jobs keep getting done fast. But there’s one more thing.

GodBound: What? And if it doesn’t involve money or loot, I’m passing.

Zero: It’s an S-Rank. Retired.

GodBound: S-Rank?

Zero: He wants you to tutor his daughter. She’s around your age. Says he doesn’t want to hire any Association-registered hunters, wants her to stay independent apparently.

Ronan read the message, then glanced over at Sarael, who was still completely absorbed in her snacks.

He hesitated.

The job didn’t sound difficult on paper, but the details Zero had given him were far from reassuring. A woman around his age, and he was supposed to train her and help her grow stronger?

He couldn’t imagine a worse setup for disaster. The money was tempting, but another potential Sarael murder incident was not—

Zero: Forgot to mention, but the payout’s an S-Rank sword and two million. Just so you know.

Ronan’s grip tightened around his phone.

Couldn’t he have led with that!?

Now refusing wasn’t really an option. Rewards like that didn’t come around twice.

"Fine."

He exhaled through his nose.

"I’ll just be a strict teacher. Maybe that’ll keep Sarael from getting jealous."

Once again, Ronan had been defeated by money. Some things just don’t change even if you’ve become powerful.

Being wanted by the world’s largest organization also didn’t really help his case.

✧ ✦ ✧

Ronan shoved the phone into his pocket and turned to face Sarael. She was still at the table, a half-eaten rice ball in one hand and a bag of shrimp chips in the other.

Her violet eyes were fixed on him the moment he moved, scanning his expression with that familiar intensity.

"Any news about what to do next?"

"A job."

"What kind of job?"

Ronan pulled out the chair across from her and sat down. No point dancing around it. She’d find out anyway, and hiding things from her had never worked out well for anyone.

"A retired S-Rank wants me to train his daughter. She’s around my age. He doesn’t want her joining the Association, so he’s hiring outside talent."

Sarael set the rice ball down. Her shadows stirred at her feet, slow and curious rather than agitated. That was a good sign.

"Train her how?"

"Combat, probably. Dungeon experience. Whatever an S-Rank’s kid needs to learn to survive without a guild backing her up."

"And you’ll be alone with her?"

There it was. The question underneath the question. Ronan leaned back in his chair and met her eyes directly.

"I’ll be teaching her. That’s it. Strict, professional, no nonsense. You can come with me if you want."

Sarael’s expression flickered. The shadows settled back down.

"You’d let me come?"

"I’d prefer it. You’re my wife. If I’m going to be spending time training some S-Rank’s daughter, I’d rather have you there."

She was quiet for a moment. Then she picked up her rice ball again, took a bite, and nodded.

"Okay. But if she tries anything—"

"She won’t."

"But if she does."

Ronan sighed. Was there really any point in stopping her now?

His skills relied on her affinity, and if he rejected her here, she might become even more unstable in the future.

And there was something else, something that definitely wasn’t reassuring.

[Do Not Provoke Entity]

Whether it came from Sarael or the system, he had no choice but to obey.

Especially if it really had come from Sarael. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓

"Then you can do whatever you want."

Sarael smiled.

It was the same smile she’d given Zero back in the warehouse—the one that didn’t quite reach her eyes. But she didn’t press any further. She simply returned to her snacks, satisfied with his answer.

"Good husband... glad to see you listened to my tip~"

[Entity Possessiveness Increased]

Ronan pulled out his phone again and typed a response.

GodBound: I’ll take the job. Send me the details.

Zero: Knew you’d come around. I’ll send the address. The old man wants to meet you first, get a feel for your abilities. Standard stuff.

GodBound: When?

Zero: Tomorrow night. He’s old-fashioned. Wants to do it in person.

GodBound: Fine. And Zero?

Zero: Yeah?

GodBound: If this turns out to be another test, I’m going to be annoyed. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓

Zero: It’s not a test. I swear on my life. Which, considering your wife, is saying something.

Ronan pocketed the phone and stood up. Sarael was watching him again, her rice ball finished, her fingers already reaching for the shrimp chips.

"We have a meeting tomorrow night. The old S-Rank wants to meet us in person."

"Then let’s make sure we don’t disappoint..."
