Chapter 237: Chapter 237: It’s Not Impossible to Crush Him
Lu Lu blurted out, "No! Nothing can happen to you!"
Yu An seized on the key point. "So, my memories really have been replaced? And if I go ask the Beast God for the truth... I’ll die?"
Lu Lu’s body stiffened. The entire vine went still, as if it didn’t know what to say.
Yu An’s expression softened slightly. In a gentle voice, she said, "Lu Lu, I really want to know the truth. If you know anything, can you tell me how to get my old memories back?"
She paused, her voice catching as she lowered her gaze. "I have some fragments in my mind. They’re just small pieces, but I feel like that’s the real me."
"Right now, even though I’m the Hall Master of the Beast God Hall—second only to one and above tens of thousands—I can’t shake the feeling that I’m just a puppet, being treated like a toy for someone’s amusement."
Lu Lu remained silent. Just as Yu An thought it wouldn’t say anything, it spoke again. "An’an, don’t ask anymore. And don’t keep obsessing over whether your memories are real. It’s better for everyone if you stay here."
"If you were to recover your original memories, you would surely leave the Endless Land. If you anger the Beast God then, I’m afraid the entire Endless Land—no, the entire world—will be plunged into eternal damnation."
Lu Lu had no eyes, yet Yu An felt its gaze upon her. "This world will be destroyed, and everyone you care about will disappear... None of us can afford the price of angering the Beast God."
Its voice was filled with terror, as if it had seen a horrifying vision of the future.
Yu An was a little confused. "Lu Lu, the Beast God may be the god of this world, but if he destroys it, where will he go?"
Lu Lu froze, seeming to gather its thoughts. After a long while, Yu An heard it say, "He has his escape route, An’an. He sees the people of this world as ants. To him, the world’s destruction will only cause a bit of backlash."
"But we’re different. We can’t withstand his wrath. But don’t worry. Once he gets bored and goes back to where he belongs, I’ll help you get your memories back right away so you can reunite with your family."
’So what it’s saying,’ Yu An mulled over Lu Lu’s vague explanation, ’is that to the Beast God, the people of this world are like a toy.’
’He plays with it when it’s fun, and when he gets bored, he tosses it aside. The toy might gather dust in a corner, but at least it’s still in one piece.’
’But if the toy dares to develop a will of its own, tries to escape its master, or even harm its master, it will be smashed to pieces in a fit of rage.’
Once she understood, anger welled up in Yu An, mixed with a profound sense of powerlessness.
The people of this world had no idea they were "toys" at the mercy of another, much less the power to resist. Perhaps if their "master" was slightly displeased, they would all vanish from existence.
Yu An felt as if a heavy stone was pressing on her chest, making it hard to breathe. After a long moment to recover, she asked in a hoarse voice, "Lu Lu, is this really the only way? Is there no room for us to fight back?"
Lu Lu’s entire vine drooped, dejected. "As far as I know, yes. An’an, don’t overthink it. The Beast God finds you interesting. As long as you go along with his wishes, he won’t do anything to you. We just have to wait until he gets bored."
It used to dream of one day cultivating a human form, but never before had it been so grateful to be just a vine.
Yu An couldn’t read its "expression," so she didn’t notice the guilt it was desperately suppressing.
It said the Beast God wouldn’t do anything to Yu An, but it didn’t say whether Feng Xuan and the others would be safe.
After all, the "good show" the Beast God wanted to see was one of loved ones destroying each other.
If it was fated that only one side could survive, Lu Lu was selfish. It chose Yu An.
That night, Yu An tossed and turned, Lu Lu’s words replaying endlessly in her head.
After what felt like an eternity, she finally grew drowsy. The moment she closed her eyes, the Amulet flashed faintly.
The light was very dim, and Yu An didn’t notice it. A moment later, she heard someone calling her name.
When she opened her eyes again, she found herself standing in a grassy field.
"Why does this place feel familiar?" Yu An murmured to herself.
’And who was calling my name?’
Yu An spun around in a daze and saw that she was completely alone.
"I must be dreaming," Yu An said, patting her cheeks. "Wake up, wake up! What kind of weird dream is this? Snap out of it."
"Heh—"
A light chuckle sounded from behind her. Yu An spun around abruptly, only to see a woman who looked like her and also like a ghost. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
She looked like her because the woman’s face was identical to her own. She looked like a ghost because the woman was transparent, just like a spirit from a legend.
Yu An asked warily, "Who are you? Where is this place?"
"I am you," Lord Mo chuckled. "Or you can call me by another name—Demon."
Seeing the confusion in Yu An’s eyes, she sighed in resignation. "Fine, let’s restore your memories first."
Yu An was surprised. "You can restore my memories?"
"Of course," the Demon shrugged. "In a way, you could say I’m another kind of Beast God. Anything that Beast God can do, I can do too."
"He doesn’t have the power to erase your memories. The so-called replacement was just sealing your memories away and implanting a new, unfamiliar set."
Yu An didn’t understand what the Demon meant by her earlier words, but before she could ask, the Demon waved her hand, and a sudden headache assaulted her.
The pain was so intense she clutched her head, the color draining from her face in an instant.
Thankfully, the agony vanished moments later. When Yu An looked up again, all of her sealed memories had returned.
She stared at the Demon before her, unsure of what to say. After struggling for a moment, she managed to choke out, "You... you’re still alive?"
"Of course I’m still alive," the Demon said irritably. "I’m a part of you. As long as you can’t die, I can’t die either."
Yu An: "?"
The Demon ignored her confusion, rattling off words like a machine gun, "Time is short, so I’ll just tell you the important parts."
"You are the true Beast God of this world. But the Upper Realm... think of it as a world one level higher than our Beastman World. Make sense?"
Yu An nodded blankly. "Yes..."
"Someone with connections came from the Upper Realm, stole the title of Beast God that should have been yours, and is treating our world like a toy."
"He has powerful backing, so you couldn’t beat him. Before he could wipe you out completely, you split yourself in two: one part to be reincarnated, and the other part, me, your Heart Demon."
"You planted me inside the Beast God’s body, hoping we could one day coordinate from the inside and out to kill him, but he outmaneuvered us."
"The Beast God knew I was your Heart Demon. He deliberately made me believe I was his evil side, then separated me from himself and had me commit all sorts of atrocities."
The Demon ground her teeth in fury. "He knew from the start that you and I were one and the same! He wanted us to kill each other. And the most infuriating part is that neither of us knew, so we did exactly what he planned."
"Luckily, when I ’died,’ all my past memories came back to me. So I went along with the ’death’ and returned to your body to recover my strength."
"This place is basically the Beast God’s headquarters, his territory. But if we put our heads together, there’s still a chance we can crush him!"
