Chapter 83: Chapter 83: Domineering Sonia Quincy’s Forced Love
Felix Preston’s brow tightened in an instant. He glanced toward the passenger-side mirror, but he couldn’t see the gray car.
"Is it Willow Quincy?" he asked, his voice cold.
Sonia Quincy’s eyes narrowed, her tone frighteningly cold. "Probably. The car is an off-brand, and it looks a little old. The chances of it being Willow Quincy are high."
"Ignore him for now. Just keep following Evan Yates."
Felix Preston quietly sped up. "Okay."
It was a long drive to the city center, and the gray car tailed their Mercedes the entire time, maintaining a steady distance. When the Mercedes turned, it turned; when it went straight, it also went straight.
Sonia Quincy had just been threatened by Willow Quincy, so she couldn’t help but be suspicious and wary.
The main road was congested with evening rush hour traffic. Following the flow of cars, Felix Preston slowly applied the brakes and asked in a low voice, "Is it still there?"
Sonia stared into the rearview mirror. "Still there. It’s just two cars behind us now."
Felix nodded. After a moment of thought, he suddenly said, "Sonia, roll down your window, stick your head out, and show your face."
"Huh?" Sonia didn’t understand. "Why?"
Felix looked into her eyes, hesitated for a few seconds, and then said with a smile, "Willow Quincy won’t hurt you. If he sees you’re in the car, he definitely won’t dare to do anything."
"..." Sonia fell silent. What Felix said was exactly what she had been thinking.
Although Willow Quincy acted like he despised her, he had never once hurt her. His target, it seemed, had always been Felix. This was also why she had chosen to stay by Felix’s side at all times.
"Okay." She didn’t question him further and simply rolled down her window.
The light had turned green, but the congested traffic hadn’t budged. Pretending to be annoyed, Sonia stuck her head out the window to survey the road ahead. After a few seconds, she glanced back, making sure Willow Quincy could clearly see her face, before pulling her head back inside and rolling up the window.
After waiting through another red light, Felix’s car finally started moving.
Sonia kept her eyes on the rearview mirror. Sure enough, at the next intersection, the gray car made a U-turn and drove off.
"He’s gone." Sonia leaned back against the seat and let out a long, heavy sigh of relief.
Felix squeezed her hand and comforted her in a gentle voice, "Don’t worry. I’m here."
Sonia closed her eyes. Her heart was pounding erratically.
"What on earth is going through Willow Quincy’s mind? He acts like he hates me so much, but he can’t bring himself to hurt me. You have no quarrel with him, yet he’s acting like a madman, trying to get you killed."
"He’s a psycho!"
"Heh..." Felix’s lips curled into a sneer. "He really is sick, and not just a little. Sonia, don’t get worked up over him. Since we can’t figure him out, all we can do is stay calm and deal with whatever comes."
"I know." Sonia was so frustrated she felt like hurting someone, her brow knotted tightly.
Felix held her hand, steering the car into a parking lot with his other hand. After turning off the engine, he unbuckled his seatbelt and leaned toward Sonia.
"Don’t be scared, Sonia." He raised his other hand and gently smoothed the crease between her brows.
Sonia didn’t feel like talking. She just took his hand and pressed it against her cheek.
Felix gazed at her, his eyes filled with heartache. He wanted to say something but felt that words would be useless. He leaned in, first nuzzling the tip of his nose against hers, then gently taking her lips in his.
Sonia was in a bad mood, but she still responded to him.
The two shared a deep, lingering kiss, a silent exchange of comfort and encouragement.
"Come on, let’s go eat." Felix unbuckled Sonia’s seatbelt and coaxed her out of the car.
Willow Quincy’s threat was no joke. From that day on, Sonia Quincy never let Felix Preston out of her sight.
For her sake, Felix had lost the Sinclair Group’s investment. The Sinclair Group had extensive connections in Aethelburg, and Winston Sinclair had declared he wouldn’t invest a single penny in Felix. With that, there was very little investment Felix could possibly raise in Aethelburg.
With Ethan Lockwood secretly obstructing him as well, the hope for investment became even more remote.
But Felix didn’t give up. He and Evan Yates went around trying their luck everywhere while also paying out of their own pockets to keep the game’s development going.
Felix had majored in programming in college and was self-taught in modeling. His skills were limited; if they wanted to make the game properly, they needed to hire more specialized professionals.
He and Evan Yates discussed it and decided to hire two employees after all.
"Technical talent is especially expensive. Preston, can we really afford to hire anyone with the money we have?"
"We can!"
Sonia burst out of the room, clutching her phone. Her whole face was flushed with excitement.
"Sonia." The moment Felix saw her, he smiled, the affection in his eyes impossible to hide.
But Sonia had no time to look at him. She clutched her phone tightly and repeated what she had just said, "Go ahead and hire people! I can pay their salaries!"
"You’ll pay?" Evan was visibly skeptical. "Sister-in-law, you work in customer service. Your salary is four thousand a month at most. How could you possibly pay their salaries for us? That kind of technical talent is expensive. Anyone with a bit of skill will cost at least twenty thousand a month!"
"Twenty thousand..." Sonia squinted, mentally calculating the copyright fees the officials from the Legend of the King game had given her. Then, with a grand wave of her hand, she said generously, "I can afford it! The money I have can cover your employees’ salaries for twenty months!"
"Just hire them, don’t worry!"
"T-Twenty months’ salary?" Evan was dumbfounded. He turned and exchanged a terrified look with Felix, even stuttering a little. "Sister-in-law, Preston and I are planning to hire two people. If one person’s salary is twenty thousand, then two people is forty thousand. Twenty months would be eight hundred thousand."
"And that eight hundred thousand doesn’t even include insurance, year-end bonuses, and all the other miscellaneous stuff. C-Can you really afford that?"
"I can afford it!" Sonia glanced at her phone, her tone absolutely certain. "I have that much money! You can start hiring right now!"
Felix stood up from his chair, staring at her in astonishment. "But where did you get that kind of money? You already gave me all the money from selling your jewelry. Where would you get another eight hundred thousand-plus?"
"I..." Sonia paused, looking inexplicably guilty. "It’s my private savings. I secretly saved it up a long time ago."
"Private savings?" Felix’s brow furrowed. He didn’t look convinced.
Sonia swung her arms smugly. "That’s right, my private savings. What, am I not allowed to have my own little nest egg?"
"Of course you can! It’s just... it couldn’t have been easy for you to save all that. I don’t want to spend it."
"But I want to spend it!" Sonia raised her hand and poked him. "It’s my private savings, so I get to decide! If I say I’m spending it on you, I’m spending it on you! You’re not allowed to refuse!"
"...Huh?" Sonia was being terrifyingly domineering, and Felix found himself unable to argue.
