Chapter 58: Chapter 58: I Was Possessed
"Mr. Joyce, should we tell Mr. Lockwood about Lynn Preston coming to Apex Design?"
Liam Joyce had just stepped out of his office when his assistant approached to ask.
Liam Joyce turned at the question and glanced at Lynn Preston, who was busy at her computer. "No need," he replied coldly. "My collaboration with Mr. Lockwood is over. Her presence won’t affect him in any way."
The assistant’s brow furrowed, a worried look on his face. "But she’s Felix Preston’s sister. Keeping our enemy’s sister around... I’m worried she might cause some trouble."
"Hmph." Liam Joyce scoffed, turning to leave the office space. "With the state the Preston family is in, what trouble could Lynn Preston possibly cause on her own? Let her stay. Her very presence is a symbol of Felix Preston’s failure."
"Seeing her here puts me in a good mood."
...
On the drive home, Sonia Quincy closed her eyes, feeling drowsy.
BUZZ BUZZ—
Suddenly, her phone buzzed twice in her pocket. Sonia Quincy opened her eyes, pulling out the device and holding it up in front of her.
—Sonia, I saw Liam Joyce.
A WeChat message from Lynn Preston was displayed on the lock screen. Sonia Quincy glanced at it and was wide awake in an instant.
"Felix, Lynn saw Liam Joyce," she said, relaying the message to him in a serious tone.
Felix Preston frowned and asked gravely, "And then? Did anything happen between Lynn and Liam Joyce?"
Sonia Quincy opened the chat and began to type. "I’m asking now."
Lynn Preston’s reply was quick. Sonia Quincy read it aloud, word for word: "’I exchanged a few words with Liam Joyce, and then he left. I didn’t find any useful clues.’"
Felix Preston grunted in acknowledgment, his reaction calm. "Tell Lynn to keep her cool and not to give herself away."
Sonia Quincy nodded and typed out his message word for word. Once it was sent, she sat up straight and stared blankly at the passing scenery.
...
Seeing her fall silent, Felix Preston glanced sideways at her and casually tried to start a conversation. "Tired?"
Sonia Quincy didn’t look at him. "I’m okay."
Felix Preston said, "We’ll be home in another twenty minutes, just hang in there."
Sonia Quincy replied, "Okay."
...
Then, silence again.
Sonia Quincy was a chatterbox. Whenever Felix Preston was with her, there was never a dull moment. This kind of silence was so rare for her that he couldn’t help but worry.
’Could it be... was she scared by what happened this afternoon?’
’Back then, he’d been in the grip of some dark impulse, not thinking straight, with his mind full of nothing but overwhelming her. Now that he was completely clear-headed, he realized with hindsight that he had gone too far.’
’Even though Sonia Quincy was his wife, they weren’t as intimate as other married couples. His sudden behavior must have been hard for her to accept.’
After thinking it over, he decided he probably needed to apologize.
"Ahem..." He cleared his throat, his gaze shifting nervously as he glanced at Sonia Quincy several times.
"Sonia."
"Hmm?" Sonia Quincy hummed in response, but she still didn’t turn to look at him.
He was a little nervous. "That thing... this afternoon. Just... just pretend I was possessed or something. Don’t take it to heart."
"...Huh?" Sonia Quincy finally looked at him, her expression one of utter confusion.
Felix Preston bit his lip and struggled to repeat himself. "I said... that thing this afternoon, in the room... just pretend I was... possessed when I did it. Don’t take it to heart."
"I haven’t changed. I’m still the normal Felix Preston."
Sonia Quincy stared at him with a blank expression, not understanding a single word.
"Felix, what on earth are you rambling on about?"
"I..." Felix Preston was easily embarrassed; he couldn’t bring himself to be more explicit. He gripped the steering wheel, his expression conflicted. "N-Nothing. Just remember, whatever you do, don’t take it to heart."
"...Why?" Sonia Quincy didn’t understand.
Felix Preston couldn’t explain, so he just blurted out, "It’s for your own good."
"Hmm?" Sonia grew even more confused.
Felix Preston said, "You’re in the later months of your pregnancy, so you shouldn’t have too much on your mind. Whatever you’re worrying about, just don’t take it to heart. I haven’t changed. I’m still the same person I was before."
"...Alright." Not understanding but deciding to drop it, Sonia Quincy turned her gaze forward and went back to watching the scenery.
Phew...
Felix Preston quietly breathed a sigh of relief.
The suspected spy, Ms. Armstrong, appeared on time at Mrs. Preston’s doorstep again the next day.
Last night, Lawrence had texted Mrs. Preston to let her know someone was coming to view the house today. Mrs. Preston made a point of waking up early, but the moment she opened the front door, she saw Ms. Armstrong already sitting on the doorstep.
"Ugh..." Mrs. Preston sighed, her head throbbing. She was too exhausted to deal with her anymore.
But to keep her from scaring off the potential buyers, Mrs. Preston called Lynn Preston for help.
Lynn Preston pleaded with her for a full half-hour, to the point where she was about to be late for work, but Ms. Armstrong refused to budge.
Lynn Preston had no other choice but to call Sonia Quincy.
"Looking for me?"
The phone had barely started ringing when Felix Preston appeared in the hallway, leading Sonia Quincy by the hand.
"Sonia!" Seeing her was like seeing a savior. Lynn Preston rushed forward in her slippers and practically threw herself at her.
"Sonia, look at her..." she whined, clutching Sonia Quincy’s arm and nestling her head on her shoulder.
Sonia Quincy patted the back of her head and said with a smile, "Don’t worry. You go on to work. I’ll handle this."
Lynn Preston: "Okay."
The moment Sonia Quincy appeared, Lynn was instantly relieved. She jogged back to her room, quickly got ready, and headed out the door while munching on a steamed bun.
Felix Preston said, "Wait a second, I’ll drive you."
"No, it’s fine!" Lynn Preston rushed out the door, a frantic blur. "I’ve already called a car, I really have to get going!"
"Sonia, come have breakfast." Mrs. Preston finished setting the table and walked over to personally lead Sonia Quincy to the dining room.
"I bought your favorite beef buns, and they’re still warm."
Sonia Quincy: "Thanks, Mom, but I’m not eating breakfast here."
"Not eating here?" Mrs. Preston didn’t understand. "Where are you going to eat, then?"
Sonia Quincy turned and pointed to the doorway. "I’ll eat out there! My work schedule is flexible, so I’ll just keep this Ms. Armstrong company and wait her out."
At the doorway, Ms. Armstrong’s face darkened.
Felix Preston adjusted his glasses, a smile touching his eyes. "Sonia is full of mischief. Just let her have her fun."
"Oh..." Mrs. Preston nodded, though her expression was still a bit bewildered. "Alright, then."
"What about my breakfast?" Felix Preston asked Sonia Quincy with a smile, looking at the table laden with steaming-hot food.
Sonia Quincy was already eating a beef bun. "Do you want me to get one for you?"
Felix Preston stared at the bun in her hand. "Sure."
Sonia Quincy said, "This beef bun is really delicious. Do you want to try one?"
Felix Preston blinked. "Okay."
Sonia Quincy then reached out, took a beef bun from the plate in front of her, and held it to Felix Preston’s mouth.
But Felix Preston didn’t take the one she offered. His gaze shifted, fixing on the half-eaten bun in Sonia Quincy’s own hand. A moment later, he suddenly leaned in and took a bite of it, right from her hand.
