Chapter 52: Chapter 52: That Sounds Like a Confession

"Know what?" Sonia Quincy asked, looking utterly confused.

Felix Preston looked into her eyes and suddenly didn’t know what to say.

Sonia Quincy had indeed been awful and headstrong before, and Felix Preston had hated her for it. But now, she had changed completely, becoming gentle and considerate. Even Lynn Preston, who had once despised her, had become her little tagalong.

She was so wonderful now; he couldn’t bear to let her know about something so vile.

He smiled, gently squeezing her cheek with his fingers, and swallowed the words he’d been about to say.

"It’s nothing. Anyway, just be extra careful around him from now on."

Sonia Quincy nodded meekly. "I know."

"Since we’ve confirmed it was Willow Quincy, what are the police saying?"

Felix Preston shook his head. "The police can’t do anything, because right now we don’t have any direct evidence proving it was Willow Quincy who caused the accident. Willow Quincy is the head of the Quincy Group. Without concrete proof, the police wouldn’t dare to cross him."

"This is probably the end of it."

"Damn it, I just want to slap him." Sonia Quincy couldn’t hold back any longer, blurting out a curse in front of Felix Preston. "Fucking moron, I just want to pummel him to death!"

"..." Felix Preston was a bit taken aback.

Only after she finished cursing did Sonia Quincy belatedly realize what she’d said, and she quickly clapped a hand over her mouth.

Felix Preston had a strict upbringing; he’d never uttered a single swear word in his life and didn’t like it when others did. And here was Sonia Quincy, his wife, deliberately breaking the rule!

’So guilty...’

But surprisingly, instead of getting angry, Felix Preston actually laughed.

"It’s fine. He deserves it." Felix Preston gently pulled Sonia Quincy’s hand away and praised her softly, "You did a great job."

Sonia Quincy was a little apprehensive. "R-Really?"

Felix Preston nodded. "Really."

Sonia Quincy asked, "But don’t you dislike it when people swear in front of you?"

Felix Preston looked at her. "It’s true, I don’t. But you’re the exception. You’re not just ’anyone else’—you don’t have to follow those rules with me."

Sonia Quincy bit her lip, her cheeks warming for some reason.

’Th-The way he said that... it sounded almost like a confession...’

...

The lawyer Felix Preston hired was a college friend. The two had known each other since high school and had always been close. Even after Felix went bankrupt, his friend hadn’t distanced himself in the slightest. The moment he heard Felix was in trouble, he rushed right over from the law firm.

Sonia Quincy also had to "work" and didn’t have time to stand guard at Mrs. Preston’s house all day. She could only frantically work on her designs in the morning, then come over in the afternoon to deal with the troublesome Ms. Armstrong and post an update on Spudster to connect with her fans.

Ms. Armstrong kept demanding justice but refused to get a lawyer or file a lawsuit. She just camped out in front of Mrs. Preston’s house every day, yelling at any potential buyers who came to view the property and scaring them all away.

"Look, ma’am, what on earth do you want?"

On the third day, as Ms. Armstrong was once again heading up to Mrs. Preston’s house to cause trouble, she was stopped at the building’s entrance by Sonia Quincy and Miles Kendrick.

Sonia Quincy stood with her hands on her hips, a helpless expression on her face. "I’ve already found a lawyer. If you would just cooperate, this could all be resolved quickly. Aren’t you tired of coming here to make a scene every single day?"

Ms. Armstrong yelled at the top of her lungs, "I told you, I don’t trust any lawyer you hire! You’re all in this together!"

Miles Kendrick took out a business card and offered it to her with a smile. "Hello, Ms. Armstrong. I’m Miles Kendrick, a lawyer with Veritas Law Firm. Rest assured, Ms. Quincy and I had never met prior to this. If you have any doubts, please take this card and do your own research."

"Get lost!" Ms. Armstrong slapped the card out of Miles Kendrick’s hand, refusing to cooperate or listen to a word they said.

"Stop putting on a show! You think I can’t see this is a scam? You two obviously knew each other already! You’re just staging this little play so you don’t have to pay me what you owe! I’m no fool! I’m not falling for your lies!"

"Get out of my way! Move!"

"Hey—" But Miles Kendrick did just the opposite, continuing to block her way.

He spread his arms in front of Ms. Armstrong, stopping her from running upstairs. "Ms. Armstrong, if you want to solve this problem, you need to approach it with the right attitude. Being this unreasonable and just making a scene isn’t going to get your husband any justice."

"How about this: since you don’t believe I can be a fair and impartial lawyer, let’s go directly to the court and begin legal proceedings. How does that sound?"

"Go to court?" Ms. Armstrong shot Miles Kendrick an impatient glare. "I don’t have time to waste on that nonsense."

"Hah," Sonia Quincy let out an exasperated laugh. "Ms. Armstrong, you want money, but you don’t want to waste any time? Since when is anything in life that easy?"

"Do we Prestons look like a bunch of pushovers to you? You think you can just demand money and we’ll hand it over?"

"And why shouldn’t you pay up?"

It only took a few words to set Ms. Armstrong off. She propped one hand on her hip and jabbed a finger erratically in Sonia Quincy’s direction, her mouth rattling off the same old lines.

Sonia Quincy didn’t want to argue. She pulled out her phone to call the police. "I can’t be bothered to talk to you. Let’s just let the police handle this."

"The police can’t do shit!" Ms. Armstrong wasn’t scared at all. "Didn’t you call them last time, too? And what good did that do you?"

Sonia Quincy replied, "Last time, I reported it as a personal dispute, so it’s normal that the police didn’t get involved. This time is different. I’m reporting you for disturbing the peace! That’s a serious public offense. The police will have no choice but to arrest you and detain you for a few days!"

As she spoke, she began to type the numbers "9-1-1" on her phone’s keypad.

Ms. Armstrong panicked. She lunged forward to snatch the phone. "You—you criminal, calling the police? Don’t you dare! You harmed my husband, and now you want to harm me too?"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa! Don’t get physical! Don’t use your hands!" Miles Kendrick jumped in front of Sonia Quincy, single-handedly fending off Ms. Armstrong’s assault.

Sonia Quincy’s head was starting to throb from all the commotion. She simply clutched her stomach and started crying out in pain.

"Oh... my stomach... my stomach hurts so much..." She grabbed Miles Kendrick’s arm, her face contorted in pain as she crumpled to the ground.

"..."

The commotion stopped instantly. Both Miles Kendrick and Ms. Armstrong were dumbstruck.

"My stomach... I think Ms. Armstrong hit it. It hurts, it hurts so much right now!"

"What?" Ms. Armstrong’s eyes widened in terror, her face instantly turning deathly pale.

"I-I couldn’t have hit your stomach! I didn’t even touch you..."

"It was you! You did it!" Sonia Quincy wailed, all while secretly pinching Miles Kendrick. He understood her plan in a flash, and his expression changed instantly.

"Ms. Quincy! Wh-What’s wrong? Don’t scare me!" he played along, supporting Sonia Quincy and smacking his own thigh in frustration.

Sonia Quincy raised a trembling hand and pointed her index finger at Ms. Armstrong. "Quick, call an ambulance! Call 911! When this woman couldn’t get the money she wanted, she tried to murder my child! I want her arrested!"
