Chapter 50: Chapter 50: Secret Kiss

"It wasn’t ’always’." Sonia Quincy replied to Felix Preston’s message as she stressed, "He was in an accident, which is why he couldn’t get here on time. This is the first time, and I’m sure it will be the last."

Willow Quincy raised an eyebrow. His face was smiling, but his eyes were frighteningly cold. "Defending him so fiercely?"

Sonia tilted her head to look at him, her tone firm. "Of course. Felix Preston is my husband and the father of my child. It’s only right that I defend him."

"Hah..." Willow Quincy let out a laugh, his smile arrogant and sinister. "There are so many men in the world. Your husband doesn’t have to be Felix Preston. Your child doesn’t have to call only him ’Dad’. And your protection isn’t something only he gets to enjoy."

"What are you talking about?" Sonia’s expression darkened, her voice sharp with anger. "Willow Quincy, I’ve realized you’re a really strange person. You claim to hate my guts, yet you also act like you want to help me, saying you want to ’save me from my suffering’."

"Your hatred isn’t pure, and your help isn’t sincere. What on earth are you trying to do? What are your true feelings for me?"

"..." Willow’s expression stiffened, and he suddenly fell silent.

Mrs. Preston stood to the side, lost and helpless. She wanted to say something to mediate, but she didn’t know how to begin.

Sonia stroked her visibly pregnant belly and said, word by word, "My husband can only be Felix Preston. My child can only call Felix Preston ’Dad’. And my protection can only be enjoyed by Felix Preston. Don’t you ever say such ridiculous things to me again."

Willow Quincy’s face was dark, his breathing suddenly growing heavy.

Sonia averted her gaze, no longer looking at him. "Thank you for your help today. We have a lot of things to deal with at home, so we won’t keep you."

Her words were a blatant dismissal. After hearing them, Willow immediately stood up from the sofa and turned to leave.

When he reached the door, he turned back and said to Sonia through gritted teeth, "Sonia Quincy, you’re as blind as ever. You can never see who truly loves you, who is truly worthy of your trust."

"I see things very clearly." Sonia stood up, stubbornly meeting his gaze from a distance. "The one who’s confused is you, Willow Quincy. Can you even tell if you hate me or feel sorry for me?"

Willow’s eyes were menacing. "Of course I can tell. Not only can I tell, but I’ve also made a choice between the two. Sonia Quincy, do you dare to hear it?"

Sonia’s voice was ice-cold. "I have no interest in hearing it."

"..." Her words almost made his composure crack.

Sonia sighed, a weary look on her face. "Willow Quincy, I was kicked out of the Quincy Family a long time ago. I have nothing to do with you or the Quincy Family anymore. Don’t overstep your bounds."

"Whether you hate me or you simply want to stand up for Cecilia Quincy, I can accept all of your malice. But I have one request—I’m asking you to direct it all at me. Don’t target other innocent people, especially not Felix Preston."

Willow Quincy ignored the first half of her sentence, saying only, "Direct it all at you? Sonia Quincy, I’d like to do that, but I’m afraid you wouldn’t be able to handle it."

"If I can’t handle it, I’ll just die," Sonia said with a nonchalant expression. "It’s just a worthless life anyway. I’ve already done my best just by struggling to stay alive this long."

The word "die" seemed to provoke Willow Quincy. He paused for a moment, a flicker of panic actually flashing in his eyes.

He didn’t respond to Sonia’s last statement. He stood there for a few seconds, then turned and stormed away.

"Sonia." As soon as he left, Mrs. Preston hurried over, carefully taking Sonia’s arm to help her sit down.

"Are you all right?"

Sonia patted Mrs. Preston’s hand and forced a smile. "I’m fine."

"Sigh..." Mrs. Preston let out a long sigh, her face full of worry. "What’s going on with you and your brother? You were family once. How did you end up like mortal enemies?"

Sonia pressed her lips together, her smile bitter. "Because we are. He’s disliked me since we were children. And, of course, I don’t like him either."

"Ah..." Mrs. Preston nodded. She could tell Sonia didn’t want to elaborate, so she tactfully dropped the subject.

「Ten minutes later, the police arrived, and so did Felix Preston.」

"Mom, where’s Sonia?"

Felix rushed in the door, his first words a frantic question about Sonia.

Sonia, who was standing by the dining table, called out, "I’m over here."

"Sonia!" Felix jogged over and, the moment he reached her, pulled her into his arms to check her over from top to bottom.

"Mom said you got into a conflict with someone. Are you okay? Did she hurt you?"

Sonia looked up at him. "I’m not hurt. I’m perfectly fine."

"Really?" Felix was still worried. He cupped Sonia’s face in his hands and stared intently into her eyes.

His anxious expression made Sonia laugh, and she couldn’t help but give his forehead a light flick. "I’m really okay. I’m not an idiot. If she had dared to hit me, I’d already be checked into a hospital by now."

"Phew..." Felix let out a heavy sigh of relief, finally feeling at ease.

"You scared me to death." He pulled Sonia into a tight hug. His lips brushed suggestively against her hair as he seemed to casually place a few kisses behind her ear.

"It’s okay, it’s okay." Sonia didn’t notice and even raised a hand to pat his shoulder gently.

The police were still there, so he held her for a few seconds before letting go.

Sonia approached the police with the recording on her phone. After some discussion, an officer said just one thing.

"This kind of thing isn’t under our precinct’s jurisdiction. It’s a private dispute between you two. My advice is to find a lawyer and settle it privately, or you can go directly to court and file a lawsuit."

After all that fuss, it still came down to getting a lawyer. Sonia saw the police out, then turned to Ms. Armstrong with a slight smile. "Let’s get lawyers. Will you find one, or should I? Or we could each get our own."

"..." Ms. Armstrong didn’t answer right away.

That shove from Willow Quincy just now had scared all the fight out of her. She had just managed to see that menacing figure leave, only for another to show up right after.

She was, after all, just one person. She could still hold the upper hand when facing two women, but with a man added to the mix, she didn’t dare cause any more trouble.

She rubbed her faintly aching neck and stammered, "I... I’m not hiring a lawyer. My husband was so badly injured this time, all my money has gone to the hospital. Where would I get the money to hire a lawyer?"

Sonia said, "Then I’ll hire one myself."

Ms. Armstrong shot a glance at Felix Preston, her face full of displeasure. "You’ll hire one? Who knows if the lawyer you hire will be on your side?"

Felix spoke up then. "If you’re worried about that, you can sue us directly in court. The court can provide free legal aid, so you won’t have to spend any money."

"..." Ms. Armstrong fell silent again.

Felix took two steps forward, staring at her with a blank expression. "Ms. Armstrong, what is your decision?"
