Chapter 39: Chapter 39: A Fruitless Report to the Police
"What do you mean?"
The moment he said that, several police officers in the office spoke up at once.
"What’s that supposed to mean, ’you don’t want to investigate thoroughly’? We came as soon as you reported it. You’re saying we haven’t been looking into it?"
Felix Preston stared at one officer’s computer. "The computer isn’t even on. What have you been investigating? You got back from reviewing the hospital’s security footage and have just been sitting here, chatting and watching videos. So who, may I ask, is on the case? Is chatting on your phones and watching videos some kind of special investigation technique?"
"..."
The officer who had retorted was instantly speechless, and the others who were on their phones quietly put them away.
"Forget it. Don’t say any more." Sonia Quincy sighed weakly, tugging at Felix Preston’s arm.
Felix Preston’s whole body was tense, trembling with anger.
Sonia Quincy pulled him behind her and apologized to the officers. "I’m so sorry. My husband doesn’t mean to question you. He’s just so scared that he’s having trouble controlling his emotions. That driver was trying to kill me, and my husband is worried he’ll try again."
"I’m pregnant now; I can’t take a second attack from him."
"That’s—that’s why I said we would do our best to investigate!" The standing officer’s voice lacked conviction as he repeated himself.
Sonia Quincy played along. "I know. Thank you for your hard work."
The officer turned sideways and waved her off. "Go home and wait for news. We’ll notify you as soon as anything comes up."
"Okay." Sonia Quincy said no more, grabbing Felix Preston’s hand and dragging him straight out of the office.
Felix Preston bit his lip, not saying a single word from the moment they left the police station until they were in the car.
"Don’t be angry. We should have expected this outcome the moment we decided to call the police." Sonia Quincy, however, was quite philosophical about it and could even manage a smile as she comforted him.
His hands rested on the steering wheel, the veins on the back of them bulging from how hard he was gripping it.
Sonia Quincy turned her head to look at him and gently patted the back of his hand. "What’s important is that we’re okay. Don’t be angry. Calling the police is a lesson most people have to learn at least once."
"No." Felix Preston disagreed. "The rich and powerful don’t have to."
"..." Sonia Quincy fell silent.
Felix Preston took a deep breath, then suddenly grabbed Sonia Quincy’s shoulders and pulled her into a tight embrace.
He held her so tightly that Sonia Quincy found it a little hard to breathe.
But she bore it quietly. She reached up to wrap her arms around his shoulders, deepening the hug. "It’s okay. We’ll just have to be more careful in the future. If the ’results’ they mentioned actually materialize, that’s great. But if not, it doesn’t matter."
"We’re just ordinary people. This is all we can do."
"Sonia Quincy." Felix Preston’s chin pressed firmly against her collarbone, his nose brushing her neck, intentionally or not, as he spoke. "Don’t worry, I’ll find the person who was driving with my own two hands. If the police can’t help me, I’ll do it myself."
"I won’t let him get away with it."
"Okay." Sonia Quincy’s hand moved up and she stroked the back of his head a couple of times. "I believe in you."
Too much had happened today; Felix Preston’s heart couldn’t contain so many emotions. First, Ethan Lockwood, and now this car crash that reeked of murderous intent—he was really starting to lose his composure.
He clung to Sonia Quincy like a drowning man to a lifeline, unwilling to let go for a long time.
Sonia Quincy didn’t know how to console him, so she could only stay with him quietly, letting him know someone was there for him to lean on.
The two of them sat in the car, their minds completely focused on each other, completely oblivious to Willow Quincy leaning against a car across the street, watching them coldly.
...
On Monday, Sonia Quincy officially started her customer service job.
Felix Preston, afraid he would disturb her, rushed out the door right after breakfast. Before leaving, he didn’t forget to add a reminder: "Just treat this job as something to do for fun. If you feel wronged or find it too tiring, quit immediately. I’m making over ten thousand a month now, more than enough to support you and the baby."
"Mm-hmm." Sonia Quincy handed him his laptop bag, smiling gently. "I know what I’m doing, don’t worry."
Felix Preston nodded. "I’m heading out, then."
Sonia Quincy: "Go on, be safe."
"..."
They had already said their goodbyes, but Felix Preston was still lingering by the door.
"...What’s wrong?" Sonia Quincy looked at him, confused. "Did you forget something, or is there something you want to say?"
"...No." Felix Preston shook his head, his expression strangely unnatural. "Nothing."
Sonia Quincy: "...Then why haven’t you left?"
After asking, she saw Felix Preston staring at her face and thought there was something on it, so she reached up to touch her cheek. "Is my face not clean?"
Felix Preston shook his head again. "It’s clean."
Sonia Quincy grew even more puzzled. "Then why are you staring at me? Aren’t you in a hurry to get to work?"
"I..." Felix Preston pursed his lips, looking like he wanted to say something but was holding back. "Can I...?"
"Hm?" Sonia Quincy’s eyes widened.
Felix Preston hesitated for a long time, his meaningful gaze lingering on Sonia Quincy’s face. But in the end, he just said, "...It’s nothing. I’m going to work. Take care of yourself at home, and call me if you need anything."
Sonia Quincy: "...Huh?"
She was completely bewildered by him, having no idea what he was up to.
The door closed in front of her. She stood there thinking for a moment but couldn’t figure it out.
"Forget it." She didn’t trouble herself with it, simply chalking it up to Felix Preston not being fully awake yet.
The work-from-home customer service job was just a cover. As soon as Felix Preston left, Sonia Quincy openly took out her tablet and started drawing.
The three designs she’d sold to Mina Jennings needed their details finalized. She had to modify them while communicating with Mina Jennings, so busy she didn’t even have time for a sip of water.
When Lynn Preston’s call came in, she was in the middle of a "heated discussion" with Mina Jennings about exactly how many diamonds to add to the necklace’s pendant.
"Hello?"
She answered the phone, her tone unconsciously edged with a bit of aggression.
"...Sister-in-law? What’s wrong with you?" Lynn Preston was a little flustered.
"...It’s nothing." Sonia Quincy forced a smile, holding her breath, as she replied to Mina Jennings’s WeChat message while talking to Lynn Preston. "What’s up, Lynn? Is there a reason for the sudden call?"
Lynn Preston got straight to the point. "Sister-in-law, I just interviewed at two companies, and one of them is willing to give me a trial period despite my situation. As long as I do a good job, there’s a chance they’ll keep me!"
"Sister-in-law, I think I have a job again!"
"That’s great," Sonia Quincy said through gritted teeth, one moment angry, the next smiling. "What’s the company’s name? What do they do? Are they legit?"
The background noise was a bit loud when Lynn Preston spoke; it sounded like she was making the call from the side of a road.
"The company is called Apex Design. They do interior design and renovation. I looked up online reviews about the company, and they seem pretty good. It should be legit."
"Apex Design?" The name sounded a little familiar to Sonia Quincy, as if she had heard it somewhere before.
