Chapter 37: Chapter 37: Sonia Quincy No Longer Fawns Over Him
The assistant wore a polite smile as he offered a business card with both hands. "Mr. Preston, Miss Quincy, Mr. Lockwood specifically asked me to give this to you."
Sonia Quincy frowned as she took the card and glanced at the name. "Desmond Abbott. Who’s that?"
The assistant patiently explained, "This Dr. Abbott is one of the top obstetricians in Aethelburg. He’s very well-known in the medical community. Ordinary people have to wait in line for at least six months just to get an appointment."
"...And?" Sonia didn’t understand why he was spouting all this nonsense.
"And so, Mr. Lockwood made a special call to Dr. Abbott. Whenever Miss Quincy needs him, you can contact him at any time. No appointment needed, no waiting in line."
"Miss Quincy and Mr. Lockwood knew each other, after all. Now that you’re pregnant and life is so difficult, Mr. Lockwood naturally wants to help however he can."
Sonia was speechless.
Seeing the change in Sonia’s expression, the young assistant thought she was finally realizing how powerful Ethan Lockwood was and continued smugly, "This Dr. Abbott is famously hard to get an appointment with in Aethelburg; not just anyone can see him. Mr. Lockwood was only able to get his card because he has a connection. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to help Miss Quincy today."
"Miss Quincy may not know this, but while this private hospital is quite good, you won’t find a single doctor here in obstetrics who can compare to Dr. Abbott. Mr. Lockwood’s intention is to ensure Miss Quincy is cared for by a more professional doctor. It’s better for you and the baby."
"And you don’t have to worry about the cost, Miss Quincy. Mr. Lockwood has already taken care of everything. As long as you’re willing, you can contact Dr. Abbott anytime. With Mr. Lockwood’s connection, Dr. Abbott will definitely take the best care of you and the child."
"..." Sonia stared at him, her expression blank. "Did I say I needed this?"
The assistant’s face was full of pride. "Miss Quincy didn’t, but Mr. Lockwood is considerate enough to think of it. This business card for Dr. Abbott isn’t something an ordinary person can get. If this were the past, Mr. Lockwood might not have needed to worry about this, but now..."
As he spoke, the assistant shot a meaningful glance at Felix Preston. "Mr. Lockwood took into account Miss Quincy’s... limited capabilities, which is why he’s offering his help. There’s no need for Miss Quincy to be overly grateful."
"Grateful my ass," Sonia cursed, her words direct and decisive. "Dr. Abbott, Dr. whoever—did I ever say I needed one? Take this bullshit card and shove it back where it came from."
The moment she finished speaking, Sonia flung her hand up and rudely threw the business card at the assistant.
"Did your Mr. Lockwood’s wife die or something? Does he have nothing better to do than worry about whether another man’s wife is having a baby or can find an obstetrician? What does any of this have to do with him?"
"N-no, you..." The assistant was stunned by the verbal assault, stammering, at a complete loss for how to respond.
Sonia reached out and looped her arm through Felix Preston’s. "Your Mr. Lockwood may be a widower, but I’m no widow. My husband is alive and well. What is wrong with him...?"
"You... you..." The assistant clutched the flimsy business card, sputtering "you" for a long moment without managing another word.
Sonia couldn’t be bothered with him. She gave him an exasperated glare and simply pulled Felix Preston away.
He spun around, staring wide-eyed at Sonia’s back. After several seconds, he finally yelled, "Y-you... what kind of manners do you have?! Mr. Lockwood was just being kind! How can you trample on his good intentions like that?!"
"Good intentions?" The phrase made Sonia laugh.
She stopped, turning back to look at the assistant, her expression dripping with sarcasm. "Is there something wrong with your Mr. Lockwood’s brain, expressing ’good intentions’ to his ex-girlfriend for no reason? He’s so concerned about me—does his true love, Cecilia Quincy, know about this?"
"I... she..." The assistant’s anger instantly deflated by half. He couldn’t answer, his gaze shifting away.
"Hah..." Sonia gave him a cold sneer and offered a brief but precise critique, "A whole house full of psychos..."
"..." The assistant was so thoroughly scolded he had no comeback.
Sonia Quincy and Felix Preston were gone. He clutched the business card and looked up at Ethan Lockwood on the floor above, his face grim.
Ethan Lockwood’s expression was even uglier.
The assistant went back upstairs and returned the business card Sonia had rejected. "Mr. Lockwood, Miss Quincy threw the card back."
Ethan Lockwood’s face was dark; he didn’t take the card or say a word.
This side of Sonia was a real eye-opener for him. In his memory, Sonia had always been a person with no backbone.
The Quincy Family had kicked her out, but for the sake of wealth and status, she could shamelessly go back and cause a scene time and again. He had dumped her because of Cecilia Quincy, and she had still tried to win him back, shamelessly and pathetically, even kneeling to him in public.
In front of Sonia, he had always been high and mighty, arrogant and superior. Sonia had worshipped him, fawned over him, like a mindless stray dog that only knew how to trail behind him.
But now, that stray dog had suddenly stopped chasing him. The stray dog said she had found a home, found someone to rely on, and would no longer beg for the scraps of affection he might let slip through his fingers.
She had a husband and a child now. She sneered at him and spoke to him with venom. She no longer adored him; she was going to protect another man now.
But on second thought, this was all actually quite normal. Sonia had nothing now. If she didn’t rely on Felix Preston, she really would be like a stray dog with nowhere to go.
But for some reason, confirming that Sonia’s heart had truly changed made Ethan Lockwood feel incredibly annoyed.
Watching Sonia and Felix Preston act so intimately, Ethan Lockwood felt a sharp pang of betrayal.
The feeling came on suddenly and inexplicably. Even he didn’t know how to explain it.
He knitted his brows tightly, his gaze fixed on the direction Sonia had left. The more the fire in his heart boiled, the lower the pressure in the air around him dropped.
The young assistant was intimidated by his aura, standing frozen to the side, clutching the business card, not daring to move.
"When is Cecilia getting here?"
After some time, Ethan Lockwood’s expression finally returned to normal.
The assistant secretly breathed a sigh of relief and answered in a trembling voice, "Soon. About ten more minutes."
"Mm," Ethan Lockwood replied faintly, turning to walk toward the other end of the corridor.
"Mr. Lockwood, the card..." The assistant hurried after him, holding the business card, and reminded him cautiously.
Ethan Lockwood gave a two-word command: "Toss it."
"Ah..." The assistant thought it was a bit of a waste, but seeing that Ethan Lockwood was in a bad mood, he could only comply. "...Yes."
"Oh, right." After walking a few steps, Ethan Lockwood suddenly remembered something and stopped abruptly. "Didn’t you say before that the Preston Family has been trying to sell a house recently?"
The assistant nodded. "Yes, it’s Felix Preston’s mother who is selling the house. The agent she hired knows me. I just heard about it by chance."
"Ah." Ethan Lockwood raised an eyebrow, and the corner of his mouth suddenly curled into a faint smile.
