Chapter 29: Chapter 29: This Female Supporting Character Isn’t Quite Right
"You’re too busy with work and always forget to eat breakfast. I was worried you’d ruin your stomach, so I made breakfast and brought it over myself. You didn’t like the things I bought you the other day, but surely something I made with my own hands will meet with your approval, right?"
"..." Felix Preston’s face was stony. He didn’t answer her.
She held the breakfast container out to Felix Preston, her eyes filled with anticipation as she gazed at him, hoping he would take it immediately or at least show a flicker of pleasant surprise.
But there was none.
Felix Preston simply turned his head, beckoned to Sonia Quincy who was standing nearby, and called out gently, "Sonia, come over here."
Sonia Quincy walked over as requested. Her smiling gaze swept nonchalantly over Renee Sinclair, showing not the slightest surprise at her presence.
"What is it?"
Felix Preston gave a faint smile, wrapping an arm around Sonia’s shoulder to pull her into his embrace. Only then did he answer Renee Sinclair.
"I’m sorry, but I’ve already had breakfast with my wife. You should take this and eat it yourself."
"..." A visible crack appeared in the warmth of Renee Sinclair’s expression. She took a deep breath, glaring at Sonia Quincy with hostility, her hand gripping the insulated container trembling almost imperceptibly.
It was the tell-tale sign of a grip strained to its limit, a testament to her forced restraint.
Sonia Quincy took in Renee’s reaction, a scornful smile touching her lips.
"Did Miss Sinclair make this breakfast herself?" she asked, feigning ignorance.
Renee Sinclair gritted her teeth. Her perfectly shaped eyebrows arched slightly, her eyes filled with blatant defiance.
"Yes. Felix is so busy he always forgets breakfast. When he does grab a bite, it’s usually unhealthy street food. I worry about his health, so I took it upon myself to make him some healthy food."
With that, Renee Sinclair flashed a triumphant smile. "As you know, Felix never has anyone around to look after him. If I don’t take the initiative, who else will have his best interests at heart?"
’This tone was a perfect match for the Renee Sinclair described in the novel—arrogant, bold, passionate in both love and hate, a woman who would fight for what she wanted.’
’But at the same time, there was a subtle inconsistency.’
’Sonia vaguely recalled that in the novel, Renee Sinclair only began her relentless pursuit of Felix Preston *after* he had divorced the supporting female character. As much as Renee Sinclair liked Felix Preston, she had a firm rule: no matter how much she loved a man, she would never be a homewrecker.’
’Renee Sinclair was an heiress. Her upbringing and prestigious status would never permit her to do something so degrading for a man.’
’That’s why she had waited until Felix was divorced before making her move.’
’But now, here she was, so impatiently and brazenly trying to steal him away, even though Sonia and Felix hadn’t divorced?’
’This was a little different from how it was written in the novel.’
"There’s no need to trouble yourself."
Sonia Quincy was still lost in thought when Felix Preston suddenly answered Renee Sinclair on her behalf.
Renee Sinclair’s expression stiffened, and she looked at Felix Preston, unable to hide her astonishment.
Felix Preston tightened his arm around Sonia, a faint smile gracing his handsome face. "Renee, saying I don’t like breakfast was just a tactful excuse to turn you down. The truth is, I eat breakfast on time every day, because my wife is always there to make sure I do."
"No matter when I leave for work, Sonia always has breakfast ready for me beforehand. Her care is more than enough. There’s no need to trouble yourself. Thank you for the kind thought."
Felix Preston spoke casually, but Renee Sinclair couldn’t help but feel that he was showing off—flaunting his happiness and his perfect life.
Unwilling to give up, she pushed the insulated container forward again. "Felix, I made this with my own hands. Are you sure you want to be so cruel and reject me?"
Felix Preston nodded firmly, his gaze unwavering. "I’m sorry, I’ve already eaten. The breakfast my wife made was delicious. I don’t need anything else."
"..." All the fight went out of Renee Sinclair in an instant. She was left speechless.
Felix Preston said, "Renee, you shouldn’t go to all this trouble in the future. My wife and I need to get going, so we’ll be on our way."
With that, Felix Preston led Sonia Quincy straight past Renee Sinclair, ignoring her completely.
Her grip tightened on the insulated container. Just as Felix Preston was about to get into the car, she suddenly called out to him.
"Felix, I didn’t drive today. Could you give me a ride?"
Felix Preston paused, his hand on the car door, and glanced over at her.
She quickly composed her expression, forcing a smile as she turned to face Felix Preston. "As it happens, I need to go to your studio to discuss the project. You can just drop me off on your way."
"..."
At the mention of the project, Felix Preston hesitated, as expected.
Sonia Quincy glanced at him and magnanimously answered for him. "Alright. Felix is heading to the studio after he drops me off anyway. Why don’t you get in, Miss Sinclair?"
Renee Sinclair didn’t stand on ceremony. The moment she heard the invitation, she strode right over.
"Sonia..." Felix Preston’s expression faltered. For a moment, he couldn’t tell if she was being genuinely magnanimous or if she was angry and doing this on purpose.
He grew nervous and was about to instinctively explain himself.
"I..."
"It’s fine," Sonia Quincy cut him off, her expression perfectly normal. "Since it’s for work, it’s no problem to give Miss Sinclair a ride. I told you, I trust you."
"Let’s go." Making herself right at home, Renee Sinclair got into the car and settled in.
"Then I’ll explain everything about this morning properly after work," Felix Preston said to Sonia, making no effort to lower his voice despite Renee Sinclair’s presence.
Sonia Quincy nodded. "Okay."
Renee Sinclair’s presence made the half-hour drive feel exceptionally long. Felix Preston kept an eye on Sonia’s mood as he drove, terrified she might be the slightest bit upset.
But to his surprise, not only was Sonia not upset, she was actually quite happy.
’Sonia had always assumed that being with Felix Preston meant she would have to fend off Renee Sinclair’s meddling. She never expected Felix to handle it so perfectly, completely shutting Renee down the moment she appeared. Renee’s provocations never even reached her; she didn’t have to lift a finger.’
’She didn’t have to do a thing except hide in his arms and let him handle it.’
’To transmigrate into a novel and meet such a wonderful man... it was hard *not* to be happy!’
"We’re here."
The car stopped in front of the same office building as yesterday. Felix Preston leaned over and unbuckled Sonia’s seatbelt for her.
"Sister-in-law!"
Lynn Preston had just gotten out of a car herself. Beaming at the sight of Sonia, she ran over and linked arms with her in a familiar, natural way.
"Bye, big bro!"
She waved to Felix Preston in the car, and it was only when she turned to leave that she noticed Renee Sinclair sitting in the back seat.
"Oh my god, what is *she* doing here?" Her expression changed in an instant, her eyes filling with sheer horror.
