Chapter 25: Chapter 25: Iron-blooded Pregnant Woman
"S-Supervisor Sullivan." Seeing this, Lynn Preston shot up from her chair and rushed to explain, "She’s not a stranger, she’s my sister-in-law! She’s here to pick me up from work..."
"Off work?" A cold sneer touched Supervisor Sullivan’s lips. "Lynn Preston, is your work done? And you’re already thinking about leaving? Your sister-in-law? It’d be useless even if your brother came!"
"Get back to work."
"Oh..." Lynn Preston looked reluctant, but she had no choice but to swallow her indignation and comply.
"What work?" Sonia Quincy reached out, grabbed Lynn Preston’s arm, and pulled her back, stopping her from sitting down to be worked like an animal.
"Is our Lynn the only employee in your company, Supervisor Sullivan? Why is all this random crap being dumped on her?"
"Random crap? Hmph." Supervisor Sullivan twisted open his thermos, took a loud slurp of the hot tea inside, and fixed Sonia Quincy with a harsh stare from his mean-looking eyes.
"Lynn Preston isn’t doing ’random crap.’ This all falls within her job description. She’s collecting a salary from this company. Shouldn’t she finish her work before clocking out?"
Sonia Quincy smiled faintly. "If this is part of Lynn’s duties, then of course she should finish it before leaving. The problem is, when was this work assigned?"
"As a supervisor, you don’t assign tasks during working hours. Instead, you dump work on Lynn just as she’s about to leave. Are you getting old and forgetful, or is there something wrong with your cerebellum? Can’t you even tell the difference between work time and quitting time?"
"In this huge office, every other employee gets to go home on time, but our Lynn has to stay and work overtime. Is this really a problem with Lynn’s work ability, or is her supervisor deliberately targeting her?"
"..." Supervisor Sullivan was left reeling by the confrontation, his lips moving for a long while, unsure how to respond.
SLAM!
He slammed the thermos down hard on Lynn Preston’s desk. The force was so great that the computer monitor shook several times.
"Me? Deliberately targeting her?" Though he was in the wrong, he acted self-righteously, craning his thick neck to challenge Sonia Quincy. "Don’t you people from the Preston Family have some nerve? Do you think Lynn Preston is so important that she’s worth me targeting? The Preston Family is bankrupt! Everyone in Aethelburg knows it! What does that make Lynn Preston? Targeting her would be a waste of my energy!"
"You need a reality check!"
"You’re the one who needs a reality check!" Sonia Quincy suddenly raised her voice, her temper flaring in an instant.
"So what if the Preston Family went bankrupt? A starved camel is still bigger than a horse. Even if the Preston Family went bankrupt five more times, the savings in our bank accounts are still more than you’ll ever see in your lifetime!"
"A petty supervisor like you, just another wage slave, spending all day scheming to bully a young girl instead of working hard to get ahead. No wonder at your age, you’ve only managed to claw your way into this pathetic position!"
"At your level, you wouldn’t have even qualified to be a security guard at the Preston Group back in the day!"
"You..." Supervisor Sullivan was shocked that the seemingly gentle Sonia Quincy dared to speak to him like that. He raised his short, stubby, fat hand and pointed angrily at Sonia Quincy’s nose.
"And who the hell are you? I’m the supervisor here. Lynn Preston is my assistant. If I tell her to work overtime, she works overtime! Targeting... So what if I’m targeting her? What can you do to me—"
"Get your fucking hand out of my face!" Sonia Quincy hated it when people pointed at her while talking. She raised her own hand and, without hesitation, smacked his away.
As if deliberately provoking her, Supervisor Sullivan immediately pointed his hand back after it was slapped away. "When the Preston Family was on top, Lynn Preston might have been some rich princess. But the family is bankrupt now, so she’s nothing. The one thing I can’t stand in this life is women like her who get cocky just because their family has money. Since she’s my assistant now, I’m definitely going to put her through her paces."
"She’s Felix Preston’s sister, you know! Who would have dared order her around before? Now that she’s finally fallen from the protection of the Preston Group, of course I’m going to enjoy ordering her around as much as I want!"
"HAHAHAHAHA!" Supervisor Sullivan got carried away by his own tirade. He turned to look at Lynn Preston, whose eyes had turned red, and the words that came out of his mouth were even more disgusting.
"A rich heiress, once high and mighty, now fallen from grace to become a gofer that anyone can order around. You have no idea how satisfying that is!"
"Ptooey!" Sonia Quincy spat viciously in the direction of Supervisor Sullivan’s greasy, disgusting face.
"You think you’re worthy of ordering a member of the Preston Family around? That’s just the dying fantasy of a fat slob!"
"You... you—" Supervisor Sullivan covered his face, his fingers clearly feeling the wet patch of saliva on his cheek. Thoroughly disgusted, he immediately raised his hand to slap Sonia Quincy.
Not only did Sonia Quincy not dodge, she even leaned her face forward. "I’m pregnant. Touch me. I dare you."
"..."
Those words were like an alarm siren. Supervisor Sullivan’s raised hand froze in mid-air.
His eyes widened as he stared in disbelief at Sonia Quincy’s stomach. Sonia had a slender figure, but her lower abdomen showed a slight bulge. What else could it be but a pregnancy?
Supervisor Sullivan may have been reckless, but he wasn’t stupid enough to lay a hand on a pregnant woman.
"Sister-in-law!" Lynn Preston moved to stand in front of Sonia Quincy. After being so timid and not daring to speak up, she finally stood up for herself.
"Jack Sullivan, my sister-in-law is four months pregnant, and it’s been a difficult pregnancy! If you dare touch her or even scare her, our Preston Family will absolutely not let you off the hook!"
"I... I didn’t touch her!" Jack Sullivan sheepishly withdrew his hand and even took two nervous steps back.
"Those who know you would call you Supervisor, but those who don’t might mistake you for the boss."
Evan Yates and Felix Preston walked in at that very moment, making Jack Sullivan flinch.
Evan Yates stood with his arms crossed, his gaze icy. "Supervisor Sullivan, it’s already after hours. Why don’t you try targeting Lynn one more time?"
"..." Jack Sullivan stared timidly at Felix Preston, not daring to speak.
"Off work? My ass!" Sonia Quincy pulled Lynn Preston protectively behind her, grabbed the files on the desk, and threw them right in Jack Sullivan’s face.
"This crappy company and this crappy job—we can’t be bothered with this! Starting tomorrow, Lynn is officially resigning!"
"Resigning?" Jack Sullivan and Lynn Preston said at the same time.
Jack Sullivan’s expression changed slightly. "A resignation has to be approved by the company. It’s not for you two to decide!"
Lynn Preston grabbed Sonia Quincy’s arm and whispered in her ear, "Sister-in-law, I can’t quit. If I leave this company, no one else will hire me..."
"Lynn needs your permission to quit?" Sonia Quincy ignored Lynn’s words and, using her pregnancy as a shield, arrogantly threw more files at Jack Sullivan’s face.
Jack Sullivan could only dodge pathetically, not daring to lift a hand in retaliation.
"This is a notification, not a request. I don’t need your crappy company’s approval! Starting tomorrow, Lynn won’t be coming in. As for her salary—deduct what you must, but pay what you owe. You’d better not short her a single penny!"
"If I find out you’ve shorted Lynn by even one cent, I’ll drag my pregnant belly here every single day and cause a scene!"
"I’m Sonia Quincy. You know how notorious my name is in Aethelburg. If you dare short Lynn’s pay, I’ll show you exactly what Sonia Quincy is capable of!"
"Do you understand?!"
