Chapter 1768: Chapter 1769: The Spendthrift Mother Who Gives Away Everything
After sending her parents-in-law back to their hometown for just a few days, Cheng Su’s university also started its break. As soon as the holiday began, she couldn’t wait to pick up all the plans she’d put on hold.
First she handled the business matters in Qing City, calling meetings with the key people in each venture to clarify who would make decisions while she was away and how to contact her about major issues.
Luckily it was midyear and there really wasn’t that much going on, especially with the restaurant side of things, where everything was running in an orderly, step‑by‑step way.
The main issue was the jam factory’s business. Of course, with Xiao Pinshan there, that wasn’t a big problem either, so once she had explained everything clearly and made sure nothing was overlooked anywhere, Cheng Su started getting ready to take Mother Cheng and Qi Xiaoqi to Guangcheng.
Her Seafood Shop had already been delayed quite a while; she needed to hurry up and get it open!
Once you have a child, traveling is much more exhausting than when you’re on your own. You have to bring along all the things the child normally uses. Looking at that big bulging bag that was just Qi Xiaoqi’s personal items, Cheng Su felt like she was moving house.
"Mom, just grab a couple of sets of clothes for Xiao Qi at random. We’ll buy more once we get to Guangcheng. He’s growing by the day; some of his clothes are already too small," Cheng Su said to Mother Cheng.
"That’s why I told you ages ago, when you buy clothes, buy them two sizes bigger. Kids grow fast; in no time the clothes won’t fit. If you buy them big, it’s different—you can get at least two years out of them, saves money too." Mother Cheng nagged, "But you just wouldn’t listen, had to buy everything so fitted. Now look at all these clothes; what are you going to do with them when the time comes? And you’re not having a second child either."
Cheng Su laughed. "Mom, buying clothes several sizes too big, that’s what poor families usually do. They don’t fit right and they look sloppy. Just look at our Xiao Qi—wearing clothes that fit, how handsome he looks, right? We’re not so hard up for money that we can’t afford clothes. As for the stuff that doesn’t fit anymore, we’ll just give it away!"
People with no money always buy clothes a bit bigger so they’ll last longer and to guard against them not fitting.
Mother Cheng rolled her eyes at her. "Give them away? You and your ridiculous generosity, throwing money around like it grows on trees. At the rate you’re wasting money, no amount would be enough. Giving them away is out of the question, we have to keep them. Your mother‑in‑law said so too—later they can be worn by Jianguo and Fengping’s kids. Or by Cheng Zhi’s child, that works too."
The older generation all know how to save, especially when it comes to clothes. In poor families, didn’t the younger brothers and sisters always wear what the older brothers and sisters had outgrown?
Not to mention, with Cheng Su being such a spendthrift, everything she bought for Qi Xiaoqi was always the best: good fabric, good quality. On top of that, they were careful about how they raised him. Xiao Qi seemed almost like he had a little prodigy’s soul in him, especially clean and neat. So all his clothes were very new and very clean. If you just gave them away like that, plenty of people would want them, but the elders couldn’t bear to.
Such nice clothes, properly stored with moth repellent, could be worn by other children later. How could you just give them away for nothing?
"By then, who knows what the times will be like? Each generation has its own new trends and fashions; people won’t even want them anymore!" Cheng Su said, half laughing.
Mother Cheng clicked her tongue. "What fashion does a little brat need to talk about? As long as it’s wearable, it’s fine!"
Cheng Su didn’t argue with her and simply said, "If you like keeping them, then keep them. But I’m telling you, year after year the clothes will pile up, and we won’t have room to store them all. In the end we’ll still have to deal with them somehow."
Mother Cheng couldn’t be bothered to respond. With all this space, how could they possibly not have room for a few clothes?
Cheng Su booked the train tickets and then called Qi Taiguo, telling him they were heading to Guangcheng. After getting his usual reminder to be careful, the three of them once again boarded the train to Guangcheng.
Old Master Cheng had been looking forward to their arrival for a long time. After Cheng Su told him the date, when they finally reached Guangcheng and walked out of the station, they saw the driver already there to pick them up, and they went straight to the Cheng family home for a reunion.
