Chapter 408: Chapter 408: A Call from Back Home

As it turned out, Qin Bogang was the stubborn type who wouldn’t turn back until he hit a wall. With a heavy heart, he returned to his parents’ home to tell them he was getting a divorce. Old Mrs. Qin was the first to grow anxious. "Everything was fine," she said, confused. "Why are you getting a divorce?"

Mr. Qin took a drag from his old pipe. "Why a divorce?" he asked.

Qin Bogang hesitated, finding the reason difficult to say aloud. Sun Li wanted a divorce for the simple fact that he was always helping his family back home.

Thinking about it made Qin Bogang furious, too. ’As a son, I help my parents. As an older brother, I help my younger brother. What’s wrong with that?’

His lips moved for a long moment before he finally forced the words out. "She’s probably still angry about that marriage-swap incident. And... well, this time, I gave our third brother the address for our second brother’s family. He went over there and caused a scene, so now our second brother and his wife are unhappy, and that’s made Sun Li angry as well."

"That scoundrel!" Mr. Qin slammed the bowl of his pipe on the table beside him. "Let’s drop the matter of the marriage swap; it’s over and done with. But what’s the deal with your second brother? Now that he’s well-off, he doesn’t know to help his own brother out?! It’s not like it’s against the law! Let’s go. Come with me to the general store. I need to give him a call!"

Qin Bogang had only meant to talk about his own problems. Seeing his father’s reaction, he belatedly realized he’d said too much. But there was no stopping his father.

He could only hurry to keep up.

As luck would have it, the courtyard was usually empty at noon. Even Mr. Du would be over at a neighbor’s house.

But Qin Jiao had no classes that afternoon, so she returned to the courtyard early. Shen Yi had said he would be back for lunch, so Qin Jiao decided to cook something. Since Mr. Du was home as well, the three of them could have lunch together.

The call came right at that moment.

Qin Jiao was busy in the kitchen, so Mr. Du answered the phone. "This is the Shen Family. May I ask who you’re looking for?"

On the other end of the line, Mr. Qin had been gearing up to give his son a piece of his mind. But hearing the voice on the other end, his fiery rage was instantly smothered, and his confidence wavered.

He cleared his throat and said, "I’m looking for Qin Zhonghui. I’m his father!"

Mr. Du said, "Oh. One moment, then."

Lacking his earlier bravado, Mr. Qin gave a quiet "mhm."

Meanwhile, Mr. Du went into the kitchen to find Qin Jiao. "Your grandfather’s on the phone," he said. "He’s asking for your father. He sounds very aggressive."

Qin Jiao wiped her hands. "Hah," she said with a dry chuckle. "He sounds aggressive, does he? I bet he’s calling to get even on my youngest uncle’s behalf. Perfect. That uncle still owes me money. Grandpa, can you watch the stove for me? Just turn it off in ten minutes."

"Alright. Go take the call."

Compared to the grandfather on the other end of the line, Mr. Du and Qin Jiao seemed much more like a genuine grandfather-granddaughter pair.

Qin Jiao took the phone. "My dad isn’t here," she said. "If you need something, you can speak to me."

"Who is this?"

"Qin Jiao."

The line was silent for a few moments, followed by two soft coughs. When Mr. Qin realized it was his granddaughter on the phone, the fiery temper that had been quelled by Mr. Du’s voice came rushing back.

He snorted coldly. "’Qin Jiao’? Don’t you even know how to properly greet your elders? What did your mother teach you? Such insolence!"

"This has nothing to do with my parents. It’s mainly that when an elder doesn’t act like one, I really can’t bring myself to offer them the proper respect. So, what’s this about? Did you call just to lecture me?"

’In her past life, she had respected her grandfather as an elder. And what had she gotten for it?’

’After she married Shen Yi, she would still send money back home from time to time. But it was as if her grandparents’ hands had holes in them; they would turn around and give everything she sent to her youngest uncle’s family.’

’Whether it was money or other valuables.’
