Chapter 389: Chapter 389: Did You Guys Have a Fight?
When Shen Yi saw Qin Jiao staring blankly, his eyes narrowed. He reached out, cupping her face in his hands. "So there really is one?"
Qin Jiao slapped his hands away and wriggled out from the compromising position. She said, exasperated, "Why do you care so much about that book? The fates of so many people—mine, yours, Aunt Du’s, Grandpa Du’s, my parents’, my sister’s—have all changed already!"
Shen Yi realized that Qin Jiao was truly angry. The room fell utterly silent, the only sound being the low hum of the bulky computer that had just been turned on.
He pursed his lips, then turned and walked away, heading back to his room.
Qin Jiao didn’t know whether to be relieved or stay angry. ’Shen Yi is being so strange.’ Still, this was the first time the two of them had parted on bad terms.
’Just a moment ago, and all day today, they had been getting along so well.’
For a fleeting moment, it was as if she saw the bad-tempered Shen Yi from her past life again. She frowned slightly.
The tense atmosphere persisted until Xiao Shi came to call them for dinner. Shen Yi hadn’t made a sound from his room, and Xiao Shi looked at her sister with a hint of confusion.
Qin Jiao, however, just asked Xiao Shi, "Xiao Shi, you went to your new school today. How was it?"
"The school is huge and beautiful, and the teachers are really nice. I decided I want to skip a grade, so they gave me a test. The results come out tomorrow. If I do well, I can go straight into third grade. If not, I’ll have to start in second grade."
Xiao Shi had started school a year later than other kids her age, beginning first grade at nine. Now she was ten, which meant she should be in second grade, but she was the one who had asked to skip ahead.
Ever since moving from Three Families Village to Ping’an Town, Xiao Shi had been studying exceptionally hard. After her sister became the top scorer in the college entrance exams, she was even more motivated, teaching herself the entire second and third-grade curriculum.
Qin Jiao asked gently, "Xiao Shi, you don’t have to push yourself so hard. Mom, Dad, and I will all work hard. You should just enjoy your childhood and your school days."
"But if you, Mom, and Dad are all working so hard, I have to work hard too. That’s what makes us a family."
Qin Jiao was taken aback for a moment, then she smiled gently and nodded. "You’re right, Xiao Shi!"
Xiao Shi beamed, then glanced cautiously at the closed door of the next room. She lowered her voice and asked, "Sis, did you and Brother-in-law have a fight?"
"No, don’t worry about it. Come on, let’s go eat."
’Shen Yi’s behavior is really off,’ Qin Jiao thought. ’He needs to cool down.’ She also realized that if she were to approach him now, their relationship might be forced to the next level.
’This fake marriage was already a last resort; she wasn’t ready to make it real.’
So she steeled her heart and turned toward the kitchen. Dinner was ready, and serving rice for a family this large took time. Qin Jiao knew her parents were exhausted after a long day. In fact, everyone in the large courtyard was tired. Only Grandpa Du, being older and not in the best of health, had more free time.
But among all of them, one person was actually the most exhausted.
’That person had just returned from a business trip to the South. As the company’s legal representative, he had to run around handling all sorts of paperwork, then manage the business, and deal with school matters. And on top of it all, he’d even remembered to find someone to assemble two computers.’
Qin Jiao shook her head to clear it, not wanting to think about it anymore. She strode toward the kitchen, not even noticing that her little sister, Xiao Shi, hadn’t followed.
Xiao Shi watched her sister go, then turned, scurried back to the closed door, and knocked. "Brother-in-law," she called out, "did you have a fight with my sister?"
