Chapter 24: First Attempt II

[You have failed to create a Soul-Technique.]

Rentaro knelt on the ground, his breathing rough and uneven as both hands trembled violently.

Thin streams of his Soul-Energy flickered around his fingers, the pressure of forcing such immense power together causing small bursts of combustion to crack through the air.

"Shit... This is even harder than I anticipated."

He knew creating a Soul-Technique, especially with the kind of Soul-Core he possessed, wouldn’t be easy, but he had never expected it to be this difficult.

Now he understood why Timeless had become his starter skill. In truth, there was never going to be a Soul-Technique he could achieve easily with the kind of Soul-Core he possessed. Even so, he refused to give up, not by a long shot.

"I guess I shouldn’t have expected it to be that easy, but to pass the selections, I need to learn at least one Soul-Technique. All the more reason I need to master this power."

He stood up immediately, took a deep breath, and stretched his right hand forward again.

Slowly, he applied the principle of amplification once more.

Focusing his Soul-Energy, he channeled it to the surface of his palm, where it sparked and danced like a surge of tidal currents like before.

"Come on..."

[You have attempted to create a Soul-Technique.]

Just like before, the energy grew steadily, and almost as if in response, a blue aura began to spiral around his palm.

"Just a little more..."

Veins bulged along the side of his forehead again, and he gritted his teeth, gripping his right wrist with his other hand as the strange, pushing force from before pressed against him again.

Then, the built-up energy spiraled out of control, erupting into a powerful shockwave that hurled Rentaro off his feet once again.

[You have failed to create a Soul-Technique.]

He tried again and again, refusing to stop despite every failure. Each attempt ended violently, the unstable Soul-Energy exploding the moment he tried to shape it, sending him crashing into the walls of his apartment.

Cracks spread across the concrete, his clothes were torn and scorched, and thin streams of smoke curled into the air from the burnt ground beneath him.

"I think... That’s enough for today." Rentaro let out a long, exhausted sigh before falling onto the scorched ground.

His chest rose heavily as the last remnants of Soul-Energy faded from his body. After countless failed attempts, he had completely drained himself. For now, all he could do was lie there and take it easy.

"Damn that vice captain... speaking about amplification and enhancement like it’s easy. Then again, my case is quite special. Status."

He summoned his status panel again.

[Assimilation: 1%]

[Evolution Points: 7]

"1% assimilation? Does that have anything to do with developing the Soul-Core?" As Rentaro searched through his status, his eyes suddenly fell onto the Assimilation Window hovering faintly before him.

It was the first time since obtaining the God-Tier Proficiency Returns that he had truly paid attention to it. Until now, his focus had been entirely on surviving, adapting, and growing stronger.

Now that he actually thought about it, Rentaro recalled the words spoken by the entity within the darkness the moment he obtained the Fragment Of Origin.

In order to complete the assimilation, he needed to know its name.

"But the assimilation is still at 1%, all my efforts, all the trials I managed to complete, it didn’t affect the assimilation rate in any way. That means I can’t increase my assimilation by normal means."

He discarded the status window.

"If this world is anything like the New Nexus, I need a guide, and I think I might just know where to find it."

Rentaro slowly got back to his feet before heading into his house. After washing up and changing into a fresh set of clothes, the exhaustion on his face eased slightly. Not long after, he left the compound and returned to the base of the Fifth Soul-Squad.

After receiving the appropriate permission, he made his way into the archives and began browsing through the countless records and documents made available to the Awakeners, searching for anything that could help him better understand Soul-Techniques. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com

The archives of the Fifth Base were vast and silent, lined with towering shelves filled with countless manuals and records gathered over generations.

Within them were detailed accounts of mankind’s progression inside the Sanctuary, documents on the evolution and development of Soul-Cores, and even rare texts that explained the creation and use of Soul-Techniques and assimilation processes.

It was less of a library and more of a treasury of humanity’s accumulated knowledge in the sanctuary.

He scanned through the shelves, there were well detailed and written manuals related to assimilating the Soul-Cores of several mythical beasts like goblins, flaming salamanders and moonlight toads.

They were mostly the Soul-Cores of beasts that were ranked low.

"As expected, nothing." Another sigh escaped his lips, and he gently closed the manual in his hand and placed it back on the shelf.

That was the fifth manual he checked out, and it turned out exactly like the last four — irrelevant.

"There really is nothing related to assimilating divine beings." He chuckled, then put a hand over his face. "What was I expecting? Even if they had cultivation manuals related to increasing the assimilation of divine beings, it’s not something they’d casually put in a library where anybody can access it.

"I guess I really have to figure it out myself."
