Chapter 10: 1v20

[There are a total of 3000 entities in the first stage, to move on to the next stage, the numbers must be reduced to 500. Creators with the accepted number of kills will be spared once the time given elapses, those who failed to meet up with the required objective will be automatically eliminated.]

[Allocated time remaining: 20 minutes]

"Reduced? You don’t mean... A 3000 man Battle Royale? No..."

He couldn’t exactly call it a three thousand man Battle Royale.

"Right... This isn’t New Nexus anymore, it’s an entirely different world." Before the Nexus Virus reached its peak, he was tagged as [458M]. That number represented the total number of humans that were affected by the Virus, however it just highlights how many people the S.A.C had documented.

He stood still as he pondered hard, his mind drifting far from the current situation. The world around him faded into a dull hum, until a soft splash broke through the silence.

His eyes sharpened, and he lifted his head slightly. The sound was faint, but his newly enhanced hearing caught it clearly, just a few meters away.

He turned.

At first, it was just a puddle of murky water in the center of several trees.

Then it moved.

The surface rippled, trembling as if something beneath it had stirred. Rentaro narrowed his eyes, his body tensing as he focused on the puddle.

Then water shifted again erratically, and Rentaro immediately steadied himself.

And then they appeared.

One by one, several golden eyes rose from the puddle’s surface, glowing faintly in the dim light. Each had a narrow, slit pupil, and they stared straight at him.

Then they fully surfaced.

Rentaro’s eyes shot open as the creatures came into view. They were built like humans, upright, broad-shouldered, and strong, but covered entirely in rough, overlapping green scales that shimmered faintly under the red light that filtered through the leaves.

They had reptile-like heads with long snouts, and sharp teeth. Their hands and feet ended in claws, and a thick tail extended behind them for balance, and they all held a long, wooden spear. freewebnσvel.cѳm

[Several Lizard folks have appeared.]

"Lizard folks?" Rentaro raised a brow as he took a step back before steadying himself cautiously. Their ranks weren’t measured, so he had no idea how strong they were.

But one thing was for certain, in the very least, they were at a level far beyond the Bloodfang Wolves.

The Lizard folks — up to twenty in number, advanced forward, their tails whipping the ground as they charged forward.

"That’s right..." A slight grin tugged at Rentaro’s lips. "Humans, Lizard folks, no matter the species it’s all about surviving. If it was my previous self, I’d probably be shaking in my shoes right now. But now..."

With a strong will, he dashed forward to meet them.

He focused his Soul-Energy and his enhanced strength into his legs, and In a flash, he leapt high above the charging horde, spinning through the air with a series of fluid front flips.

Then, with pinpoint precision, he came crashing down, landing squarely on the head of a Lizard folk, slamming it into the ground with bone-crushing force.

SQUASH!

The head of the Lizard folk splattered into chunks of hard meat as Rentaro landed on it, using his Soul-Energy to increase the weight of his foot by concentrating it. He realized that these were some of the practical uses of Soul-Energy which he himself had no knowledge of till now.

Crouching low, he surged forward in a flash, before sending a fist through the mouth of a Lizard folk that rushed at him in a fluid motion.

[You have killed a Lizard folk!]

[You have received an evolution point!]

"Hm?" A low hiss came from behind him, and Rentaro reacted instantly, springing into the air just as two Lizardfolk aimed their spears at Rentaro’s head from his sides.

In midair, he twisted his body and brought his leg around in a clean, sharp arc. The roundhouse kick struck both of them at once directly across the neck.

The impact was heavy, and their heads snapped around violently, before their bodies collapsed almost immediately to the ground.

[You have killed a Lizard folk!]

[You have received an evolution point!]

The more he struck down the lizard folks, the more notifications popped up in his line of vision. Each strike was a dance, and with time he slayed a majority of the reptilian creatures.

"Two more to go." With fierce determination in his eyes, he picked up one of the spears from the fallen Lizard folk as the remaining two charged towards him in a straight line. Then in one swift, powerful thrust, he hurled the spear through the air at the head of the lizard folk in front of him.

Unexpectedly, he sliced through the skulls of the last two remaining lizards and defeated them both in a single strike.

[You have slain all Lizard folks!]

[You have gained a total of 20 evolution points!]

[You have leveled up!]

[Level 6 - Level 7]

Rentaro stared at the notifications as they kept on flashing in his sights. "Level 7 already? Not bad." If it were other Awakeners, by now they’d be in level 2 or 3, but the fact that obtaining the Nexus Code increased his level by 5 was a huge help.

’That brings the total of my kills to 20, the system said the only two ways to pass the first trial is to either be among the last five hundred people left, or if that number isn’t met when the time elapses, have a specified number of kills. I guess I won’t know till the time’s ov-’

Rentaro’s brows jerked as a faint, tapping sound immediately snapped his senses to full alert.

A faint tap... tap... sounded behind him, soft but distinct against the wet, muddy ground, and he turned around instantly. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

From a distance, a figure of average height moved through the muddy ground, approaching carefully towards him.

The figure wore a dark hooded cloak, the hood pulled low so its face remained hidden in shadow.

In its hand, it carried a long spear, its tip catching faint light as it advanced slowly, each step quiet but steady as it closed the distance between them.

’Who is that?’ Rentaro thought as he felt a suffocating aura pressing against him, it felt as if a 500KG dumbbell was tied to his waist.

"What a powerful aura..." He gritted his teeth as he struggled to stand still. ’What the hell is this thing?’ It wasn’t a Lizard folk, not even close. It was leaner, smaller, and had a more powerful presence.

The moment Rentaro blinked, the figure vanished from his sight.

"Huh?" Rentaro’s eyes widened to their limits as a faint red glint flashed off a metallic surface right in front of his eyes, close enough that it cut through his focus like a warning.

Then he realized what it was.

"S—Shit!"
