Chapter 90: An Insignificant Bug
Elara was fighting for her life in absolute silence.
She remained pressed against the cold, broken wall in the narrow hiding spot, her body completely pinned by the overwhelming killing intent radiating from the Eternal Veil Syndicate representative. It felt like an invisible mountain had slammed down on her, crushing every inch of her being. Her alloy limbs refused to move, locked in place by the sheer oppressive force. Her lungs burned as she struggled to draw even the smallest breath. Her red heart monitor inside her chest flickered erratically, warning systems flashing in her vision.
She was blacking out.
Consciousness came and went in terrifying flashes. One moment she was aware of the dust in the air and the distant crackle of fires. The next, everything went dark, her mind slipping into nothingness. Each time she fought her way back, gasping internally, terror surging through her. She knew the truth with crystal clarity: if she fainted now, she would die. If the representative found her while she was unconscious, he would kill her without a second thought — just to ease his frustration, to vent his rage at losing Zephyr Kane.
Her body trembled internally, but outwardly she remained perfectly still. Not a single sound. Not even the faintest shift of her weight. Tears stung the corners of her eyes, but she didn’t dare let them fall. She couldn’t warn Lian. There was no safe signal, no way to reach him without giving away her position. She was completely alone in this nightmare, pinned like a butterfly under glass.
The representative, still half-buried under rubble a short distance away, moved with painful effort. His remaining right arm pushed against a heavy concrete slab, muscles straining as he tried to free his lower body. Blood continued to ooze from his severed left shoulder, the stump raw and ugly. Bruises and deep gashes covered his once-aristocratic face and torso. His elegant robe was in tatters.
He coughed violently, spitting a thick mouthful of blood onto the rubble. His eyes burned with murderous fury.
He refused to accept this outcome.
With a low, angry growl, he closed his eyes and spread his perception outward. As a high-level cultivator, his spiritual sense expanded like an invisible tide, sweeping across the ruined district with terrifying clarity. He searched for any trace of Zephyr Kane — a lingering Qi signature, a flicker of movement, even the faintest breath.
Nothing.
No trace. No energy. No body. The lone wanderer had vanished completely.
The representative’s face twisted with even greater rage. His breathing grew heavier, more labored. He coughed again, blood spraying from his mouth.
“Damn you...” he growled, voice hoarse and filled with venom.
His anger exploded.
He released even more killing intent, the pressure intensifying dramatically across the entire area. The air grew thicker, heavier, almost solid. The few remaining survivors in the distance collapsed, vomiting blood and losing consciousness. The ground trembled under the weight of his fury.
Elara felt it the strongest.
The increased killing intent slammed into her like a physical blow. Her vision darkened again. Her body screamed in protest. It felt like thousands of invisible blades were pressing against her skin, her organs, her soul. She was losing consciousness faster now, black spots dancing in her vision. She fought desperately, clinging to awareness with sheer willpower. If she fainted here, it was over.
The representative’s perception continued sweeping the area like a cold, merciless tide. He saw everything in vivid detail: piles of dead people — humans, aliens, cultivators of all species — scattered among the rubble like discarded toys. Broken weapons, shattered storage rings, burning wreckage, and the massive wound splitting the planet in the distance.
Then, for the briefest moment, his perception passed over Elara’s hiding spot. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓
He saw her.
A young woman with alloy limbs, hiding in fear, body pinned and trembling under his pressure. Her face was pale, eyes wide with terror, barely clinging to consciousness.
He paused for half a second... then dismissed her completely.
She was nothing. An insect. An insignificant bug hiding in the dirt. Killing her would bring him no satisfaction, no relief from his rage at losing Zephyr Kane. He could see how scared she was, how close she was to breaking, and it meant nothing to him.
He turned his attention elsewhere, still searching for any trace of the man who had humiliated him.
Elara remained frozen in her hiding place, barely conscious, fighting with everything she had to stay awake.
