Chapter 335: Chapter 231: A Good Show
"Captain, who were those two? Why were they so arrogant?"
Inside the newly pitched tent, the members of the Wildfire Hunters sat in a circle, chewing on dried meat. Among them, the hot-tempered Sidney Lewis asked with some indignation.
The captain, Derek Warren, was still smiling. However, compared to the smile he had shown Paige Summers and Marcus Monroe, this one held a bit more authority.
He put down his food and scanned the faces around him.
He knew exactly what they were thinking. They felt that the Hunting Party was strong, and they were resentful that he had bowed down to those two in an almost fawning manner.
But in reality, he didn’t think he had done anything wrong.
His smile vanished. Derek Warren warned, "None of you are to cause any trouble with those two, you hear me?"
He rarely spoke with such a stern voice and severe expression, and everyone was taken aback.
Listening and watching, Heidi Lee’s mind raced. She couldn’t help but ask tentatively, "Captain, don’t tell me... those two have a powerful background?"
Derek Warren neither nodded nor shook his head, but after a long pause, he finally said, "Did you see that Mutant Bird with them? Its power is at least equivalent to a Fifth-rank Superpower User. Anyone who can afford to keep a creature like that as a pet has the right to be arrogant. I can’t even gauge their Superpower Level, so don’t get any funny ideas. You’ll only get yourselves and others hurt!"
Hearing this, the defiant looks in their eyes instantly changed.
Some of them were Fifth-rank Superpower Users, while others had not yet reached the Fifth Rank. The strongest among them was the captain, Derek Warren, who possessed a Fire Element Sixth Rank Superpower.
They knew full well how many Crystal Cores and how much time it took to reach their current Level of Cultivation. But now, they learned that their opponents’ pet Mutant Bird was on par with them. The power of its masters was something they could scarcely imagine.
The atmosphere suddenly became silent and oppressive.
After a long while, Sidney Lewis cursed sullenly, "This world is so damn unfair! They don’t look much older than me. They’re probably some noble family’s sons, fed Crystal Cores since they were kids!"
The others didn’t respond, but they all thought the same thing.
Only Derek Warren shot him an impatient glance, opening his mouth as if to rebuke him.
He had been the closest to the pair. The murderous aura they exuded couldn’t be faked; it wasn’t something a hothouse flower could possess. ’Even if they are from a Noble House with abundant resources,’ he thought, ’they must have been tempered by countless bloody battles. They’re not on the same level as the members of my team.’
But on second thought, he had already warned them. He figured they wouldn’t dare to try anything. It was just a case of sour grapes. If he kept scolding them, he would just make himself look cowardly.
’Forget it.’
He closed his mouth and went back to eating his dried meat.
But as the faint aroma of food drifted in from outside, the dry, coarse meat in his hands seemed exceptionally unappetizing. He couldn’t help but sigh to himself. ’I have to keep fighting. Only when I reach their level can I say I’ve truly made it!’
He thought that would be the end of it. The team would set off early tomorrow morning. They and the pair would go their separate ways, never to cross paths again.
But he had underestimated his team members’ ambition.
「Midnight」
A slender figure slipped out of a tent and stealthily made her way toward the one several hundred meters away. Her pace wasn’t fast, as she observed her surroundings while she moved.
But what she didn’t know was that just as she left, a companion in one of the tents opened her eyes. The woman in the sleeping bag sneered, her pretty face filled with undisguised contempt.
Meanwhile, the five men in the adjacent tent had also gathered together.
One of them lowered his voice and said, "It wasn’t from the captain’s side, it was from Heidi Lee’s tent! What’s going on, Sidney? Did you invite those two women to get a piece of the pie?"
Sidney Lewis immediately protested his innocence. "Of course not! With you here, they’d be useless. Why would I call them?!"
Another man snorted coldly. "I bet that hussy Heidi Lee is trying to latch onto someone powerful!"
Hearing this, the faces of two other men darkened even more.
Heidi Lee had only recently joined the team; this was her first mission.
Since leaving the city, she had used her good looks to flirt with several of them. She seemed like an easy conquest, but she hadn’t given herself to anyone along the way. They were already annoyed by this, and now, knowing she might be secretly offering herself to someone else, they were furious. Their resolve to deal with that man and woman grew even stronger!
Sidney Lewis, however, had no interest in that kind of woman. His eyes were set on the Crystal Cores those two possessed.
He had no doubt they were from a Noble House. How could people like that travel without carrying a good number of Crystal Cores? Besides, since their Superpower Levels were above the Sixth Rank, any Crystal Cores they had must be High-level!
Most importantly, no matter how strong they were, no matter how capable, it was still just two people and a bird!
Their side just so happened to have an expert pharmacist, especially skilled with knockout drugs. His concoctions were top-notch; they could even knock out a mutant black bear, let alone a person!
As long as they acted properly, he wasn’t worried about failure at all.
At this thought, he hurriedly suppressed his excitement and called to the others, "It’s perfect that woman is acting as the vanguard. Think about it. For the two of them to be traveling outside the city alone, their relationship must be special. Heidi Lee wants to seduce the man, but we’ll see if the other woman allows it. Even if she fails, she might stir up some trouble. Maybe they’ll even start fighting amongst themselves, which would make it easier for us to move! Get ready. We’ll proceed as planned. Oh, and the drug we gave the captain should be taking effect by now, right? We can’t have him waking up and messing things up..."
While they were busy scheming, Paige Summers was watching the show unfold.
Marcus Monroe had returned to the tent not long after finishing his meal. Before he went in, he gave her a meaningful look, leaving her in a difficult position.
The man had only pitched one tent. That, combined with his look... ’I’d have to be a fool not to know what he’s thinking!’
But Paige Summers felt awkward about it.
If this were the old Marcus Monroe, she would have been shy, but deep down, she would have been happy to be close to him. But the current him was clearly impassive toward her, yet he was still making this kind of gesture. No matter how she thought about it, she could only explain it as simple male lust.
’How could I possibly like that!’
So, she had stayed by Sweetie’s side, leaning against it until now.
And as a result, a good show had come to her.
She had noticed the woman not long after she left her tent.
At first, she didn’t understand her intentions, assuming it was a sneak attack, which she found amusing. It was only when the woman got closer, deliberately avoided her, and disappeared behind the tent that Paige truly understood what she was up to.
Her hands itched to do something.
But just as she was about to get up, she hesitated.
’They say men can’t resist temptation. So, will he accept this temptation that’s arrived right at his doorstep?’
For the most part, she still trusted Marcus Monroe, but a sliver of uncertainty remained in her heart.
While she was hesitating, the woman acted quickly and had already found a way inside.
Paige Summers gritted her teeth and simply sat back down.
She wanted to see just how Marcus Monroe would handle this "temptation"!
