Chapter 44: Request

Rex scratched the back of his head after hearing Leo’s blunt, businesslike tone.

"I don’t actually need anything from you," he said with an awkward smile. "I just wanted to apologize on behalf of my friend."

He pointed toward a modified off-road vehicle parked a short distance away.

Standing beside it was the man from the intelligence shop.

Leo recognized him immediately.

"He told me everything that happened yesterday," Rex continued. "I’m sorry for your loss... but believe me, it wasn’t his fault."

Leo looked at Rex silently for a few seconds before speaking.

"So he’s your subordinate."

A look of understanding crossed his face.

"That explains his sloppy behavior."

He glanced at Rex.

"Like boss, like subordinate."

Rex’s smile stiffened.

Leo continued before the man could defend himself.

"Don’t worry. I don’t blame him."

"You can all relax."

Rex let out an awkward laugh after being included in the insult.

"Even so, he was worried you’d come looking for revenge someday."

Leo shook his head.

"Tell him not to worry."

"I’ve already forgotten about it."

Rex nodded.

"By the way, thanks to the information you sold the military, our convoy managed to hunt down two of those aliens."

Leo raised an eyebrow.

"How do you know I was the one who sold that information?"

"And how did you get your hands on it in the first place?"

"I don’t think the military would share something that important before verifying it themselves."

He paused briefly.

"And after paying so much for it, they wouldn’t be foolish enough to spread it around either."

Rex simply smiled.

He tapped the side of his head with a finger.

"Trade secret."

Then he added,

"From what I heard, the military made full use of your intelligence."

"Their night raid was a complete success."

Leo wasn’t interested in digging into the mystery or discussing the military’s operation.

"Whatever."

He turned around and began walking back.

"Wait."

Rex quickly caught up with him.

"Are you interested in joining our convoy?"

"I think you’d fit right in."

"We’re a strong group, and in times like these, it’s always better to have people watching your back."

Leo paused for a brief moment. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm

Then he continued walking without answering.

Rex refused to give up.

"Hey, don’t be so guarded."

"You don’t have to reveal your abilities or tell us your secrets."

"I’ll just explain the rules and the benefits of joining. After that, the decision is entirely yours."

As they walked, Rex enthusiastically listed the advantages of becoming a member of the Freedom Convoy.

Leo listened quietly.

Under normal circumstances, he might have seriously considered the offer.

But after everything that had happened yesterday.

He wasn’t ready to join another group yet .

To put an end to Rex’s relentless persuasion, he finally replied,

"I’ll think about it."

Realizing that Leo wasn’t in the mood to discuss the matter any further, Rex wisely stopped trying to persuade him.

"Alright, dude. See you around."

With that, he waved and headed back toward the modified off-road vehicle.

Leo also returned to where Danny and his family were waiting.

Danny was still engrossed in the book Leo had given him, reading each page with complete focus.

Meanwhile, the little girl sat on the ground nearby, looking bored out of her mind.

Unlike the other Lily, this child wasn’t particularly shy.

She knew Leo had given her food, so in her innocent little world, he was a good person.

The moment she spotted him, her eyes lit up.

She happily waved her tiny hand.

"Mistah!"

"Come! Come!"

Hearing the little girl’s innocent voice, a faint smile unconsciously appeared on Leo’s face.

He simply raised a hand and waved back.

Then something suddenly crossed his mind.

Without saying a word, he turned and climbed into the truck.

Inside, the woman was still diligently cleaning the cargo compartment.

Hearing footsteps, she turned around.

The moment she saw it was Leo, she immediately bowed.

Leo merely nodded and gestured for her to continue before looking around the compartment.

Soon, his eyes landed on the bunny doll lying in a corner.

He picked it up.

Then he grabbed a folded mat lying nearby before heading back outside.

Walking over to the little girl, he spread the mat on the ground before gently picking her up and placing her on it.

Finally, he handed her the bunny doll.

The little girl’s face immediately lit up.

She hugged the doll tightly against her chest and happily began playing with it.

The movement caught Danny’s attention.

He quickly stood up.

"Hello, sir. You’re back."

He respectfully handed the book back to Leo.

Leo accepted it before asking,

"Did you learn anything from it?"

Danny nodded.

"I don’t understand a lot of it, but I think I understood the general idea."

Leo nodded.

"Reading alone isn’t enough."

"I’ll teach you a few basic movements."

"You won’t become strong overnight, and you don’t have much time."

"So practice hard and hope your efforts pay off."

Danny nodded seriously.

Leo then demonstrated several simple stances and body movements from the book.

Danny carefully copied every movement.

Unfortunately, his posture was stiff, and several of his movements were incorrect.

Leo patiently corrected each mistake.

The lesson continued for nearly ten minutes.

Seeing her father moving around, the little girl became interested and began copying him.

She waved her tiny arms and awkwardly bent her knees, trying her best to imitate the adults.

Not even a minute later, she became tired and sat back down with a pout.

Seeing that, Leo chuckled.

He reached into his pocket, took out a small packet of candy, and handed it to her.

The little girl’s eyes immediately sparkled.

Danny continued practicing for a few more minutes before his body finally gave out.

Breathing heavily, he scratched the back of his head and smiled awkwardly.

"Sir... I think this is my limit."

Leo shook his head.

"Don’t worry."

"It’s always difficult the first time."

"You’ll get used to it little by little."

"How much stronger you become depends on how much effort you’re willing to put in."

Danny nodded gratefully before sitting down on the mat with his daughter resting in his lap.

The little girl held up the candy packet toward him, silently asking him to open it.

Danny didn’t do so immediately.

Instead, he looked at Leo.

Only after Leo gave a small nod did Danny tear open the wrapper and hand the candy back to his daughter.

She immediately popped it into her mouth.

Her eyes squinted shut in pure delight.

For a brief moment...

Leo saw another little girl wearing the same joyful smile.

Lily.

His expression stiffened for an instant before he quietly shook the memories from his mind.

Breaking the silence, Danny spoke.

"Thank you, sir... for helping my family."

"My name is Danny."

He pointed toward the truck.

"My wife is Linda."

Then he looked lovingly at the little girl in his arms.

"And this is my daughter, Lily."

Leo simply nodded.

"Leo."

"And you don’t have to keep thanking me."

"I just needed someone to clean my truck, and you happened to be there."

"It’s just business. Nothing more."

Not wanting to continue the conversation, Leo sat back down on his foldable chair and resumed reading his book.

Danny could tell Leo wasn’t comfortable being thanked.

So he didn’t say anything else.

After resting for a while, he resumed practicing the movements Leo had shown him.

Nearly an hour later, Linda finally stepped out of the truck.

"Danny! Come help me!"

Together, the husband and wife carried out the broken furniture, shattered glass, and piles of debris from inside the cargo compartment.

Working together, the two continued cleaning and organizing the truck.

By the time everything had been cleaned and properly arranged, nearly three hours had passed.

By the time everything had been cleaned and arranged, the sun was already beginning to set.

Danny and Linda walked over to Leo.

"Sir, everything inside has been cleaned. You can check it if you want and tell us whether you’re satisfied."

Leo looked at the couple for a long moment before speaking.

"You both must have noticed something strange inside the truck."

His tone remained calm.

"I don’t know if I can trust people anymore."

He paused briefly before continuing.

"But I’m willing to bet on your goodwill."

"So... don’t tell anyone what you saw inside."

"You can leave now."

Danny immediately nodded.

"Sir, don’t worry."

"We won’t tell anyone anything, no matter what."

Leo simply nodded and lowered his head, returning to his book.

Danny turned to leave.

However, Linda remained where she was.

Her face was filled with hesitation, as though she wanted to ask for another favor but didn’t know how to bring it up.

Danny looked at her in confusion.

After gathering her courage, Linda finally spoke.

"Sir..."

"Now that we have so much food, I don’t feel safe staying too far away."

She glanced toward Lily before continuing.

"Can... can we set up our tent beside your truck?"

Danny’s expression changed.

"Linda..."

He hurriedly tried to stop her.

Leo had already done so much for them.

Asking for another favor felt shameless.

Leo didn’t answer immediately.

His gaze shifted from Linda to the little girl standing beside her.

After a moment of silence...

He nodded.

A bright smile instantly spread across Linda’s face.

"Thank you, sir!"

"Thank you so much!"

"We promise we won’t cause you any trouble."

Danny also let out a sigh of relief.

The couple quickly took out a small tent and began setting it up beside the truck.

By the time they finished, darkness had already fallen.

Leo finally closed his book and stood up.

He noticed Danny and Linda preparing to cook dinner.

"There are some bags of rice and a few pieces of meat inside the truck."

He pointed toward the cargo compartment.

"Take them out and cook a meal for me as well."

"I’ll provide the ingredients as payment for your cooking."

Linda instinctively wanted to refuse.

"Sir, we couldn’t possibly—"

"Enough."

Leo cut her off before she could finish.

"Just do as I said."

Linda wisely swallowed the rest of her words and nodded.

"Yes, sir."

She immediately began preparing the ingredients.

Before long, the aroma of cooking food slowly drifted through the campsite.

Just then, a cheerful voice sounded from nearby.

"Wow..."

"Is there a party going on here?"
