Chapter 26: Chapter 26 Am I having a miscarriage?
Not long after, Ivy drove past a hospital—or rather, what used to be a hospital.
The building once belonged to someone she knew... a long-time friend who had drifted away after traveling out of the country.
Her eyes widened as the entire place came into view.
It had turned into a disaster zone.
Broken glass littered the ground like shards of ice. The once pristine white walls were now stained with streaks of dark, dried blood. Parts of the building had collapsed inward, and the entrance doors hung loosely from their hinges, creaking faintly as the wind pushed against them.
Ivy’s grip on the steering wheel tightened.
Back when she had been busy hoarding supplies, she hadn’t thought about anyone else—not for a second.
Her children had been her only priority.
And now...
Parked in front of her friend’s ruined hospital, a flicker of guilt crept into her chest.
Is she okay?
The thought came uninvited.
A heavy sigh slipped past Ivy’s lips.
You can’t blame me... can you? she thought bitterly. I can’t allow what happened in my first life to happen again. Not this time.
Her jaw tightened.
All I focused on was gathering supplies... and I don’t regret it. That’s the only way I can protect my children.
GROWL—
The sound was sudden. Loud. Wrong.
It snapped Ivy back to reality.
Her head jerked up—
And her gaze landed on them.
A wave of half-transformed monsters flooded out of the hospital.
Some dragged their limbs unnaturally. Others twitched violently, their bodies stuck between human and something far more grotesque. Their eyes glowed faintly, their mouths stretched open as guttural sounds tore from their throats.
“Oh... shit,” Ivy breathed, her voice barely above a whisper.
Before she could even react—
They were already on her.
Claws slammed against her windows.
THUD! THUD! THUD!
Scratching. Screeching. Gnashing.
The glass trembled under the force, but thankfully, she had already wound it up tightly.
“I wasn’t expecting it to spread this fast...” she muttered, fear creeping into her voice despite her effort to stay calm.
Her grip on the steering wheel tightened until her knuckles turned pale.
“But then again...” she added under her breath, her eyes darting rapidly around her surroundings, “nothing is predictable anymore.” frёeweɓηovel.coɱ
She inhaled deeply—once. Twice—forcing her chaotic heartbeat to slow.
Then, gently...
Her hand moved to her stomach.
“Hold on tight, little pumpkin,” Ivy whispered softly, her voice trembling just a little despite her attempt to sound reassuring. “Mommy’s going to get us somewhere safe... to your sister. Just hang on, okay?”
Her expression hardened almost instantly after.
With a sharp turn of the wheel and ruthless precision, Ivy slammed her foot down on the accelerator.
The engine roared.
The car lunged forward and plowed straight through them.
Bodies slammed violently against the hood and windshield. Some rolled off with sickening thuds, while others were dragged briefly beneath the car before being flung aside.
But Ivy didn’t stop.
She couldn’t afford to.
Not even for a second.
Finally..
“I’m out...” she breathed, relief flashing across her face as she broke free into the open road.
All she needed to do now was keep driving.
Just keep moving.
Before the ones she had knocked down got back up again.
But just as Ivy sped forward...
A truck suddenly swerved violently into her path.
Several monsters had appeared out of nowhere, climbing onto it, clawing at its doors and windows.
The driver ....clearly had no idea what was happening.
Panic took over.
The truck veered wildly.
Ivy’s eyes widened.
“No!”
Before she could react....it came crashing straight toward her.
“NO!”
BOOM!
The impact was devastating.
Tires screeched while metals scream.
Her entire car shook violently as the truck slammed into it, the force sending a brutal jolt through her body.
Pain exploded through her abdomen.
Ivy gasped sharply, her hands instinctively clutching her stomach.
“Oh... my baby...” she whispered, panic flooding her voice.
Her breathing turned uneven.
Her vision blurred for a moment, black spots dancing at the edges.
Without thinking, her trembling hand moved down toward her lap....
Wet.
Warm.
Slowly... almost fearfully... she lifted her hand.
Blood.
Her heart dropped instantly.
“S-System...” Ivy’s voice broke as tears welled up in her eyes. “Am I... am I having a miscarriage?”
Outside, the monsters had already begun surrounding her car again.
Their shadows loomed over the windows.
Their growls grew louder.
“Answer me, System!” Ivy cried, her voice cracking as tears streamed down her cheeks. “I don’t want to lose my baby again! I wasn’t even able to breastfeed her in my first life... I didn’t even get the chance—!”
Ding!
{Host’s baby is perfectly fine.}
Ivy let out a shaky, disbelieving laugh, tears slipping freely down her cheeks.
“Perfectly fine?” she repeated, her voice rising in disbelief. “Are you serious right now? I’m bleeding! This looks exactly like a miscarriage—and you’re telling me everything is fine?!”
Ding!
{Affirmative. The host’s baby is unharmed.}
{The minor bleeding is a physiological response triggered by extreme fear and stress.}
{Additionally, the host has already received enhanced physical attributes from the system. This enhancement extends to the fetus.}
Ivy’s breathing slowed—just slightly.
But her hands still trembled.
{External impacts of this level will not result in miscarriage. The fetus is significantly more resilient than a normal human embryo.}
Silence filled the car for a brief moment. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm
Even the chaos outside seemed distant.
Muted.
Ivy swallowed hard, her throat tight.
{If you are still unsure... I can assist you in performing a scan right now.}
“And how exactly is that supposed to be possible?” Ivy asked hoarsely, raising a brow despite the fear still lingering in her chest.
Before she could process anything further—
A sudden cold sensation spread across her stomach.
Startled, she quickly lifted her gown to look.
A golden gel had mysteriously appeared, smooth and cool against her skin.
Her breath hitched.
The system interface materialized before her eyes.
More vivid than ever before.
It flickered once... before stabilizing.
Displaying a clear image.
Her baby.
The tiny figure moved gently within her womb, turning slowly... almost as if responding to her presence.
Alive....safe and perfect.
The sight alone shattered whatever walls Ivy had built around her heart.
“My baby...” she whispered, her voice trembling, softer than ever before.
Tears blurred her vision again but this time....They weren’t from fear.
