Chapter 17: The chief assistant Samuel
Within two minutes, April was escorted into a spacious, soundproof private office on the top floor. The room smelled of expensive mahogany and leather.
Sitting behind a massive desk was the branch manager, an older man with graying temples and a sharp, calculating gaze.
He slid the check into a glowing validation scanner, his brow furrowing as the machine chimed green, confirming the check was entirely authentic.
He cleared his throat, leaning forward. "Miss, I am Manager Vance. This check is perfectly valid, but given the extraordinary amount, protocol dictates we perform a security interview. What exactly is your connection with Mr. Xavier Reed? Are you a business partner, or...?"
April sat comfortably in the leather armchair, crossing her legs. She didn’t look flustered by the implied interrogation. Instead, she leaned over the desk slightly, a cold, knowing smirk playing on her lips.
"Oh, I’m just his savior," she said, her voice entirely flat and matter-of-fact. "That’s our relationship."
Manager Vance blinked, entirely thrown off by her deadpan response. His savior? It sounded completely absurd, yet her absolute confidence made it impossible to dismiss as a joke. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
Deciding not to risk offending a potential associate of the Reed empire, the manager picked up his desk phone and dialed the high-priority verification line for Reed Industries.
The call went through instantly. After confirming multiple layers of security pins, Vance’s posture stiffened.
"Mr. Reed, my apologies for the disturbance. I have a young woman at the Central Reserve main branch attempting to deposit a personal check from your account for ten million dollars... Yes, sir... Understood sir... Yes, sir."
Vance’s face underwent a sudden, dramatic transformation from suspicious authority to absolute, pale reverence.
He hurriedly held the receiver out toward April. "Mr. Reed wishes to speak with you directly, Miss."
April took the phone, bringing it to her ear with a quiet chuckle. "Did you follow my instructions, Mr. Reed?"
"Who the hell are you?" Xavier’s voice crackled through the line. He sounded entirely breathless, a chaotic mix of deep shock and intense urgency vibrating in his throat. "My private investigator caught Chen outside his apartment with a passport and a hard drive containing the mainframe codes. And the emergency call from the capital harbor—it was a coordinated distraction, exactly like you said. If I had boarded that jet..." He paused, his tone shifting into something tightly controlled and remarkably respectful. "My assistant will be at the bank shortly to pick you up. Please, go with him, Miss."
April chuckled softly, leaning back into her chair. So he’s using ’Please’ and calling me ’Miss’ now. The arrogant, untouchable billionaire was finally learning how to use his manners.
Her predictions had all come true flawlessly, and he was already completely desperate for her next fortune reading. It was a beautiful calculation.
"I’ll go with him," April replied smoothly. "But just so we’re clear, I’ll be borrowing your assistant until you arrive, though. I can tell you’re too swamped dealing with the corporate fallout to meet me immediately, so he’ll be driving me around."
On the other end of the line, Xavier nearly gasped. A heavy, stunned silence hung over the receiver for a few seconds before he spoke, his voice laced with absolute bewilderment.
"How... How did you know that? I haven’t even announced my schedule to my own board of directors yet. Are you tracking my movements?"
April let out a soft, mysterious laugh. "Let’s just say it was a lucky guess, Mr. Reed. Just know that I’m taking him. What are you going to do about it?" ƒгeewёbnovel.com
Xavier let out a sharp, defeated breath, realizing he had absolutely zero leverage against this woman. "What exactly are you planning to do with Samuel?"
"Oh, nothing much," April purred, her eyes gleaming with a dark, predatory excitement. "We’re just going to visit some wholesale sites. I have a lot of shopping to do with the money I just deposited, you see. Well, until we meet again."
She said and handed the phone back to Manager Vance, who was now sweating profusely through his designer suit. He didn’t ask a single further question.
Within ten minutes, April’s new private, high-tier black card account was officially opened, and the ten million dollars were safely loaded into her possession.
She stared at the black card. It was shining, and its digits were encrypted in gold. This was the smell of fortune. And it smelled nice.
Now, where to next? She did plan to borrow the wealthiest man’s assistant and it was mainly to get information on places she could start hoarding supplies from.
When April walked down to the bank’s grand lobby, a young man in a clean tailored suit was already waiting by the entrance, holding a tablet.
The moment he spotted April walking out of the manager’s office, he knew right away it was her. He had gotten her description as well as her name from the branch manager.
He stepped forward, bowing politely.
"Good morning, Miss. My name is Samuel, chief assistant to Mr. Xavier Reed. I trust you are Miss April?" He asked and April nodded. "Mr. Reed has instructed me to place myself and his private vehicle entirely at your disposal today."
"Pleased to meet you, Samuel," April said, her voice smooth as she walked past him toward the waiting sleek black sedan at the curb. "Let’s get moving. We have a lot of ground to cover."
As they slid into the luxurious leather interior of the car, April felt all too comfortable. She had never gotten into such a comfortable car. It made her want to sink into the seats, but none of that. She couldn’t show she was a country bumpkin to the man who would be reporting all her movements to Xavier.
She turned to look at the sharp, efficient assistant.
"Samuel, you’re an executive assistant for a major logistics empire, which means you know literally every supply chain, distributor, and wholesale manufacturer in this city, right?"
He gave a curt nod. "I do, Miss."
"Great. I need you to give me a list of the largest wholesale companies for bulk food, medical supplies, and industrial gear."
