Chapter 73: Retreat
Varkhaz was leading his legions to the Greyfen Village. Without the presence of Archmage Arlen, the runes he placed upon the village and the watch tower wouldn’t be effective without his presence.
After killing two B-rank humans as well, Varkhaz believed victory and conquest were certain.
Along the way, he caressed his face. There was a lingering scar that would last for years because of how difficult to get rid of Branna’s Sword Intent. Varkhaz didn’t mind, the Sword Intent was unable to spread from the scar.
Varkhaz didn’t hold resentment to the dead—instead of being infuriated from receiving a scar, he treated it as a trophy.
His gaze fixated on the Greyfen Village. With the ability of one of his captains, they had fully masked their presence.
Just as he was over the moon, he abruptly stopped. The captain halted as well. They stared at their future Demon Lord filled with confusion.
Varkhaz’s aura suddenly exploded. He was enraged.
The captain glanced at each other, until they gazed at Belzura. Their eyes were filled with inquiries.
Belzura was perplexed and unable to find the answer. She used her ability Infernal Foresight but failed.
Her Infernal Foresight’s ability was limited. If there were factors that could interrupt it, and she failed to sense it, her ability’s fatal flaw would be exposed.
She was trembling. If she failed to provide an answer, Varkhaz would definitely release his pent-up anger on her.
She failed to acknowledge that they were in the middle of conquest. Varkhaz was sane enough to understand that injuring his captain at this moment would not benefit him.
He turned around while trying to restrain his anger.
He asked Belzura, "You said Ignaroth will kill the fleeing livestock? And that, he even kill the one that shows up?
Why is he dead, instead?"
The other captain drew a cold breath.
They were utterly shocked.
They glanced at Belzura in disbelief.
Not only Ignaroth died, Belzura’s foresight failed for the first time.
Belzura’s mind turned blank. She was blankly staring at Varkhaz.
Varkhaz scrutinized her reaction. He thought. There’s only one reason why her foresight failed—a human stronger than us killed Ignaroth.
He contemplated deeply. Ignaroth might have successfully killed the fleeing human and Belzura’s foresight only stopped in that moment.
The stronger human should have only stepped up by then.
Varkhaz refused to believe that a human comparable to a Demon Lord has appeared. He had confirmed from other demons that they had occupied their attention.
Varkhaz gritted his teeth and glanced at Tharvok.
Tharvok was terrified. He was only assured that Varkhaz didn’t show a sign of venting his frustrations on him.
Varkhaz said, "Let’s retreat."
The legion was taken aback.
Varkhaz was an arrogant demon like any others.
But they were unaware that unlike the powerful demons they were familiar with, Varkhaz was overly cautious.
Now that a variable has appeared, he couldn’t allow to take a risk.
The four-armed demon covered in glowing abyssal runes created a Rift Gate, enough for the legions to pass through.
The Rift Gate was connected to their home fifty thousand kilometers away from their current place.
In a minute, the legion entered the Rift Gate. Varkhaz was the last to enter. Before he vanished with the Rift Gate, he had taken a glance at the direction of the Greyfen Village and gritted his teeth.
He swung his Hellfire on the place out of frustration and he finally vanished.
Max wasn’t aware that the demons had left. freeweɓnovel.cѳm
Six hours later, he had finally found the horses in the near settlement, seemingly reporting to the guards...
...
The Willowmere Settlement was a Walled Town—the second settlement that Max had discovered.
The Willowmere Town had an approximately 8,000-10,000 population, including the travelers from across the Mirefall region.
Willowmere served as the primary intermediary settlement between the frontier villages of western Mirefall and the larger cities deeper within the province.
It was often the first true urban settlement encountered by adventurers leaving Greyfen Village.
The town was currently bustling. They were celebrating their town’s anniversary. The plaza was filled with stalls and festivals’ design.
At the moment, the soldiers, responsible for guarding the west gate that had imperial roads connected to the Greyfen Village, were alarmed by the presence of two untamed horses. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
The horses were filled with magical runes—letting them know they weren’t wild.
The horses ran towards them and spoke. Immediately, the soldiers informed a Scout to find a Beast Tamer in the Ranger Class.
Only a Beast Tamer could communicate with beast, including the horses.
By then, they could gather information from the horses immediately.
As the horses appeared to be horrified and panicking—despite being armed with numerous magical runes, their information was definitely valuable...
Especially when the south gate faced the direction to the Greyfen Village. They wouldn’t be surprised if a disaster struck, causing the horses to be on the loose.
They waited for a tense ten minutes until the horses suddenly glanced at the direction they came from.
The soldiers were horrified. They stood frozen to the ground.
It was currently night and there were no lights in the imperial road. The darkness had not only swallowed the imperial road, but it also slowly crept into them.
Suddenly, a silhouette of a human appeared. He was conspicuous. His attire was glimmering.
He wore a long white coat reaching below his knees, worn over a dark inner tunic.
There were silver embroidery traces the edges of the sleeves, collar, and lower hem, forming interconnected rune patterns.
His shoulders were reinforced with light silver pauldrons engraved with an enigmatic emblem.
He wore pair of white-and-silver gauntlet gloves extending to his forearms.
A polished silver ring bearing a miniature shield-and-sword insignia was on his right index finger. A small white crystal was embedded at its center.
Another slender silver ring fitted with a pale blue gemstone on his left index finger. The gemstone appeared translucent and resembled a tiny eye when viewed from certain angles.
He had a hexagonal silver medallion suspended from his chain around his neck. The front surface contained multiple rotating rune circles surrounding a central crystal.
Scrutinizing him from a distance, with the darkness surrounding him, he was like the light at the end of the tunnel.
They glanced at his appearance and he was definitely...
Not a noble.
He smiled at them and waved his hand...
