Chapter 194: Chapter 194: Zombie
This ability was a lot like her personal space suddenly expanding outward.
Jiang Si looked at the pillow beside her. Extending a hand, she tried to summon it over.
After a minute, she still hadn’t succeeded.
She plucked a tuft of white fur from Qin Shen and experimented with it a few times.
As long as she didn’t want the fur to touch her, it wouldn’t.
And if it did land on her, she could easily make it vanish.
It was the same as her spatial ability, but the range of control was tiny—as if she were enveloped in a layer of indestructible skin.
Jiang Si was incredibly excited. She wanted to wait for Qin Shen to wake up so she could test just how strong the defensive power of her newly formed Space Barrier was.
Having slept from day until night, Qin Shen finally stirred awake.
However, he hadn’t reverted to his human form yet.
Jiang Si immediately demonstrated her new ability. "Qin Shen, look."
At first glance, the apple she was holding seemed to be resting in her palm. A closer look, however, revealed it was actually hovering in the air, separated from her skin by a transparent, two-centimeter-thick Barrier.
A hint of shock appeared in Qin Shen’s pitch-black eyes. He subconsciously reached out a large paw to gently touch Jiang Si.
However, his paw didn’t touch so much as a single hair.
A mysterious force in the air separated them.
Jiang Si asked, a little excited, "So? Did you feel it? I think I have my own personal Barrier now."
With that, she picked up the nearby pillow, hugged it to her chest, and prompted Qin Shen to try touching it.
Qin Shen tentatively reached for the pillow with his paw, but once again, an invisible obstruction appeared out of nowhere.
He couldn’t touch the pillow either.
Seeing his paw stop abruptly in midair, Jiang Si exclaimed in excitement, "It seems I can protect anything I’m touching!"
’If this Space Barrier is strong enough, I can protect everyone when we’re in danger.’
Jiang Si then motioned for Qin Shen to try biting it. Qin Shen knew perfectly well how powerful his bite was. After a moment’s thought, he used his tail to pick up a small hammer and smashed it down hard on the pillow.
The Barrier stopped it.
Jiang Si gestured for Qin Shen to continue.
Again and again, no matter how hard Qin Shen swung with his tail, the Barrier didn’t allow the hammer to make a single sound, completely protecting Jiang Si.
Growing even more delighted, Jiang Si begged Qin Shen to try biting her.
Qin Shen looked at the arm she held out to him. He hesitated for a moment before tentatively biting down.
The moment his teeth made contact, he didn’t feel a hard surface. Instead, there was a soft yet resilient rebound, like biting into a cushion of air.
No matter how hard he bit, Jiang Si’s Barrier deflected the force perfectly.
Qin Shen retracted his massive jaws and shook his head at an expectant Jiang Si.
Jiang Si hugged him happily. "It’s amazing! It’s so amazing!"
’It’s just that the range of this Barrier is a bit small. If I could expand it, like my personal space, to the size of an acre or two... wouldn’t that create a natural shield? A mobile utopia!’
’I don’t know if this change is from absorbing too much of Qin Shen’s energy, or from absorbing an entire Superpower Stone.’
’If it’s the latter, where would I even find another Superpower Stone?’
’I can’t just go carving them out of living people.’
’Having even a small Barrier is already pretty good.’
’If I really started killing people for their Superpower Stones, what would make me any different from the people I despise?’
Jiang Si glanced at the time, then asked Qin Shen, "Are you hungry? Should I get you something to eat?"
Qin Shen shook his head, so Jiang Si gave him some water to drink.
Ever since seeing the superpower users, Zhang Aihua and his group had been on edge. They returned to the cave, terrified that the superpower users might show up at their door at any moment.
Jiang Si had mentioned they might need to consider leaving this place. Zhang Aihua had thought about it for a long time, but he still couldn’t make up his mind.
’What if they don’t come looking for us after all?’
’This place was just too good to leave.’
They had already made the cave quite livable, and had truly started to treat it as their home.
Besides, they could fish here anytime they wanted. If danger appeared, Jiang Si and her group would be there to face it. Plus, the radishes they had just planted were growing strong.
No one wanted to leave.
To this day, Zhang Aihua still hadn’t dared to tell Song Yufang what he had witnessed the day before.
Seeing Zhang Aihua’s constantly worried expression, Zhang Yiwen couldn’t help but ask, "Dad, what exactly did you see that day? You haven’t said a word about it since you came back, and the other uncles have all been scared witless too."
Zhang Aihua ruffled his son’s hair and shook his head. "It’s nothing. I’ll tell you once I’ve figured things out."
"Okay, fine."
Zhang Aihua mulled it over and decided he should first ask what Jiang Si and her group were planning to do.
’If Jiang Si and her group aren’t leaving, then we should stay too.’
’Even if we go somewhere else, we could still face the risk of being found.’
Zhang Aihua quietly found a deserted corner and called Jiang Si on her pager.
"Miss Jiang, are you planning to leave?"
Zhang Aihua was apprehensive, wondering if it would be okay for them to follow along if Jiang Si’s group decided to leave.
Although Jiang Si’s group was small, he always had the feeling there was more to them than met the eye.
Perhaps it was because they had tamed the troop of monkeys, or perhaps it was because of Qin Shen’s unusually powerful presence.
Jiang Si’s reply came back: "Not for the time being."
Zhang Aihua breathed a sigh of relief and said happily, "That’s great. In that case, we won’t leave for now either. Miss Jiang, if you need any help at all, please don’t hesitate to ask."
"Mm."
After speaking with Jiang Si, Zhang Aihua was visibly more relaxed.
Zhang Yiwen asked him, "Is everything sorted out?"
Zhang Aihua nodded. "All sorted out." He then added, "Quite a few Vultures fell from the sky yesterday. Let’s go see if we can find them. We can make your mom another Vulture-down jacket."
Since the Vultures had very little of the best-quality down, Song Yufang had used all of it for the two of them. She made the excuse that she rarely left the cave, so she filled her own jacket with inferior, mixed feathers.
Zhang Yiwen’s eyes lit up. "Yes, yes! I’ll go change my clothes right now!"
A moment later, both he and Zhang Aihua had changed into the Vulture-down jackets Song Yufang had made for them.
It was a free-for-all scavenging time, so anything they found was theirs to keep.
Zhang Yiwen searched for a long time in the direction Zhang Aihua had pointed, but he couldn’t find anything. He asked, puzzled, "Dad, are you sure you weren’t seeing things?"
Zhang Aihua shook his head. "I don’t think so. Let’s keep looking."
Suddenly, Zhang Aihua saw a staggering figure up ahead.
He tensed up instantly, raising his gun defensively. "Let’s go! Now!"
Zhang Yiwen hadn’t seen it yet. "Why? We haven’t found anything."
The words had barely left his mouth when he saw the staggering dark figure. Its face was as terrifying as a zombie’s—one half was rotting away, its eyeballs were milky white, and its skin was a deathly blue-black.
Zhang Yiwen screamed in terror, "Dad! Dad, run! It’s a zombie! A zombie is coming!"
His shout drew the zombie’s attention, causing it to look their way. At that moment, Zhang Aihua also got a clear look at its face.
Instantly, he raised his gun, about to fire at the female zombie.
"Don’t shoot!"
’The female zombie was conscious! She was telling him not to shoot!’
