Chapter 242: Who Is This "She"?
Yuche didn’t wait for permission to do what he had wanted to do since he put Rouxi on the couch for the first time.
The second Lingyun turned toward the front door, ready to carry out their woman’s orders, Yuche slid one arm beneath Rouxi’s knees and the other behind her back before lifting her off the couch and back into his arms.
Rouxi immediately frowned, a cute wrinkle appearing between her brows as she glared at him. "I can walk you know," she hissed silently, but Yuche only shook his head.
"No," he said, his voice coming out harsher than he intended it to. But she had taken at least ten years off his life with that leg of hers. "You might be able to walk, but I can’t let you. Not until I am sure that your..."
His voice trailed off, but Rouxi simply relaxed against his chest like he didn’t have to explain anything more.
"Then carry on," she said, her nose up in the air as she waved toward the front door. "Today’s entertainment awaits."
"Yes, my queen," he murmured before kissing her hair. "Whatever you want."
She hummed in agreement before getting even more comfortable.
The nickname had come out of his mouth so smoothly several people turned to look at him, but Yuche ignored them.
The woman had gotten her spine broken, nearly died, had her leg rebroken less than five minutes ago, and somehow still believed she should be trusted to make decisions regarding her own mobility.
She would be lucky if he ever let her walk on her own for the rest of her life.
Luo Xin made a tired sound from where he had collapsed against the coffee table and Yuche looked down at him. "Thank you," he murmured. The two words held so much inside of them that he didn’t want to think about it.
"You’re welcome," replied the medic, his eyes seeing more than what Yuche wanted to admit.
Rouxi looked between them before turning her full attention to Yuche. "I can’t help but notice that you haven’t moved yet. Are you going to change that any time soon?"
Yuche let out another long breath as ne no longer fought to hide the smile on his face. "Of course not... let’s go before Lingyun kills someone."
The fact that she was complaining again did more to ease the knot in Yuche’s chest than he wanted to admit.
The group moved toward the front door together.
Commander Li stepped outside first followed quickly be the rest of his team. Chenghai left the house right after and Zhenlan followed him. Lingyun practically bounced through the doorway like somebody had finally given him permission to be himself again.
Yuche carried Rouxi outside last.
The difference between the yard and the living room was immediate.
The battle was officially over and now the feeding had begun.
Ash still covered large sections of the ground, but the jungle had already started reclaiming it. Bright green vines pushed through blackened soil. Flowers the size of a toddler opened among the destruction, their thick roots crawled across the earth like veins spreading through flesh.
The jungle looked healthier than it had that morning and Yuche wasn’t entirely sure how he felt about that.
Rouxi leaned slightly forward in his arms, her attention immediately focused on the flowers.
Of course it did.
A tiny smile appeared on her face. "The babies are growing," she said softly before leaning back into his embrace and getting comfortable again.
Yuche looked at the nearest flower, only to blink when he noticed that the thing had developed teeth. Actual teeth.
A scream shattered the relative peace of the yard and everybody looked toward the source.
Jiang Meilan still hung exactly where they had left her.
The vine wrapped around her waist kept her suspended several feet above the ground. Dirt stained her once white clothing and her hair had come loose at some point during her struggles. The perfect face of makeup had completely melted, dissolved by the tears, sweat, and fury that were running down her face.
The moment she saw people emerge from the house, hope appeared in her eyes.
Yuche watched the transformation happen in real time.
It was like she became a completely different person. Her shoulders straightened, her expression sharpened, and her voice returned. "You finally came out."
Nobody answered and the silence seemed to catch her off guard.
Her gaze jumped from Commander Li to Chenghai and then to Lingyun. "One of you need to get me down right this moment before I get my father involved."
Rouxi lifted an eyebrow but didn’t say anything.
Yuche knew better than to say anything either.
This wasn’t about him. It wasn’t about Commander Li or Lingyun or any of the others standing in the yard. Whatever had started between Rouxi and Jiang Meilan had begun long before any of them entered the picture, and it was rapidly becoming clear that it would end the same way.
While Meilan focused entirely on Rouxi, the jungle continued growing around her.
The nearest flower had changed again. The bloom was noticeably larger than it had been a few minutes ago, its thick petals spreading wider as the plant slowly unfolded. Yuche watched the movement from the corner of his eye and immediately understood why Rouxi suddenly looked pleased.
The flower wasn’t looking at the bodies anymore.
It was looking at Meilan.
"Commander Li." Meilan’s voice rose sharply when nobody rushed to answer her demands. "You can’t seriously leave me here."
The commander turned his head toward her. For a moment, Yuche thought he might actually respond. Instead, Commander Li simply looked away and continued studying the recovering jungle.

Meilan’s expression changed immediately.
"You can’t."
The confidence that had filled her voice moments earlier began to crack. Her gaze darted from face to face, searching for someone willing to disagree with the commander’s silent verdict.
"You saw what happened. You know what she’s doing." freeweɓnovel.cøm
Yuche glanced down at Rouxi.
She looked delighted.
"She?" Rouxi asked, raising an eyebrow. "And just who is this ’she’ you are talking about?"
