Chapter 112: A house divided (5)
"Okay," Regina replied only to not argue with Minnie right now. Nothing is going to convince the woman that the affair did indeed happen but she just didn’t want to admit she entertained her butler. After the way she spoke about others during the years, one of her own secrets was coming back to bite her. ƒгeewёbnovel.com
Minnie stood up finished with the conversation even though she was the one who brought everyone down to the dining table. She was thankful she raised her son right because he had not believed the news for a second. The others at the table were questionable because she believed one of them did this. The only question was how did they find out? "I will be having breakfast in my room. Find a way to entertain yourselves until you are granted permission to leave. The house is big enough that you shouldn’t bore yourself so easily."
"I will fix this for you right away mother," Nathaniel said as his mother left the room. "How could someone be so evil to post such a thing? My mother would have never cheated on my father with a butler of all people."
Rachel rolled her eyes because yet again Nathaniel was blind to his mother’s actions. Anyone with a good set of eyes could see how nervous the woman was. It was clear as day this was no lie and Minnie’s behavior showed it. Nathaniel was probably the only one at the table not doubting there was some truth to this.
"I hope you don’t become disappointed with the truth one day. You hold your mother to such high standards it would be a shame for her to let you down. As Regina said, she can lie to everyone on the outside but should tell the truth to her family," said Rachel. She was glad her daughter had the common sense to question her grandmother. At least one other person wasn’t falling for Minnie’s lies.
Nathaniel suddenly got a grip on Rachel’s arm, tired of her spouting nonsense. How could she be so quick to write this off as true? This will affect all of them if people start believing he was the son of a butler. "I am tired of your nonsense. Do you want to be known as the wife of the son of a butler?"
"Who cares? Your mother’s side makes you the son of a Hamilton. People can’t discredit your bloodline from the Hamilton side and if needed, you must cut off your mother in the future to save yourself. That’s how cruel the world is and you know your mother would cut you off in the blink of an eye to save herself. Only you are blind to see that," Rachel shook her head disappointed with her husband once again. Why couldn’t her husband use this opportunity to weaken his mother’s hold on him?
"I will not turn my back on my mother at a time like this. Our reputation is much more important than whatever bad blood you have with her. I will not allow anyone to think I am the son of a butler," Nathaniel abruptly stood up, frustrated that he had been pulled into his mother’s situation. He doubted she entertained the butler but out of all things that could’ve been said, why did someone use this against her? "Come to me when you understand how this will affect us."
Nathaniel stormed off from the table in search of something to drink to calm his nerves.
"Samuel, I hope that you never inherit your father’s bad temper. In these times we need to look out for ourselves. You cannot allow the things done by other people to bring you down with them. I have raised both of you much better than that. Regina, you are at the age of being married and things like this can affect you. Samuel, you are taking after your father and the last thing you need is this attached to you. Understood?" Rachel only had to look out for her children. She didn’t care what would happen to Minnie after this.
For all the times Minnie had enjoyed gossiping about others it was time for her to feel what others felt. Rachel had no sympathy for the woman after how she was treated over the years. If you treated others well, they would care for you when the time came.
"I sorta agree with father. Whether it’s a lie or not, we have to help Minnie get past this. You might not have a good relationship with Minnie but I want to keep the one I have. It won’t work out in my favor if I turn my back on her. I have to show loyalty so that she can trust me more in the future," said Samuel.
Rachel smiled happy that her son was only looking out for his best interests. "Very well, use this time to get closer to your grandmother and show her your loyalty. We can make this work to all of our favors." Rachel didn’t care how anyone felt. This rumor provided her the opportunity to start removing Minnie from being the head of this house. What she first needed to do was convince her husband to stop worrying about if he was the son of the butler. They had bigger things to worry about.
"I am going to speak with your father. Do not cause any trouble for the day. And Regina, since no one will be coming to our home, I will be taking care of your dance lessons from tomorrow. It’s a shame you’ll have to miss some of the parties happening these days but I’m sure you are on the top of the list for someone’s future wife. When this is all over, I will plan you a grand celebration for you to move the hearts of all suitors."
’I can hardly wait,’ Regina thought to herself. The last thing she wanted to do right now was go around a room convincing men of how she would make a good wife. However, there was still the plan of finding a wealthy man to lend her support to help her take over the family and become the head person in charge.
After Rachel left, it was only Regina and Samuel remaining at the table. To break the awkward tension between the two Samuel decided to speak up first. "Do you think it’s true? It had to come from somewhere," he said. free𝑤ebnovel.com
"I don’t know. I don’t want to say my opinion and then you share it with Minnie behind my back. Let’s keep what we think to ourselves." She had not forgiven him for keeping Minnie’s idea to entertain a marriage proposal from Gilbert a secret and she didn’t plan on forgiving him any time soon. He was dead to her as she told him.
"Come on Regina. It’s a bit childish for you to still be angry with me after how much time has passed. I let you in on why it would be a good idea for you to marry Gilbert but since you objected to the idea, I am not pushing for it. Can’t you forgive me so that we can move on to being siblings again?" He begged his sister. Samuel disliked the rare times that they fought with each other.
"The next time you have some bright idea you think will benefit you and your position in this house, leave me the hell out of it. I am not a thing for everyone to use as they please. Out of everyone in this house I trusted you the most and I will bever forgive you for what you did. You were only thinking of yourself that day you sat down and agreed with everything Minnie proposed. You are a coward when it comes to grandmother and a coward is not fit to lead this house," Regina said knowing it would be the one thing to hurt her brother.
He took pride in believing he would take after this father and become his heir. It was why he stopped training to become a guard for the king. Samuel was trying his best to prove to everyone he was the best person to run their family business.
"If mother had another son, no one would have even thought of giving you the time of day to take after father. Always remember that it is because you are the only son in this family that they are trying to take you seriously. Everyone here knows you are a joke but no one is willing to admit it. That’s why they are training you extra hard in hopes they can make something out of you," said Regina. She no longer felt the need to baby her brother and his feelings. She truly believed she could do a better job than him but they won’t give her a chance.
"It’s one thing for you to be mad at me but it’s another thing for you to say these things out of anger. You must not have been paying attention if you don’t see how fit I am to follow in our father’s footsteps."
"Believe me, I have been paying attention. And it’s not our father you should be following. I might not like her these days but Minnie is the one with the real power. I aspire to be like her one day." Their father was nothing compared to Minnie in Regina’s eyes.
