Chapter 110: A house divided (3)
"Your idea of mercy and mine are nowhere near similar. All I’m saying is that you could’ve read the situation and not contributed to scaring the girls even more than they were. Can’t you be nice to other people? The fact that you do it to me is not charming by the way."
"Says the woman who doesn’t care to be charmed. Stop trying to make everything be rainbow and butterflies when you have first-hand experience that the world is not like that. I am the leader here and rules were put to protect wolves. If you allow two human girls, next thing you know it’s three more next week. I care for the wolves and no one else. Understand that?" Everyone looked out for their own kind. As alpha, he had to be strict to make sure no one got hurt in the long run. He didn’t care if no one didn’t like him because of it.
"I understand this might not be the place for me to stay. I am not like the people here and I am not like humans back at home. The only person close to who I am is Artemis and I am not so certain of how I feel like her yet. If I can, I want to help others just like I needed help but here, you’ll just look out for the wolves. I understand your position but I don’t think I am meant to be here. And maybe that’s why I left in the first place," she referred to why her past self left Vincent and went to the Hamiltons.
"Aurora, you are not leaving-"
"Honestly Vincent, did I get away from one prison I called home just to come to another? Why on earth wouldn’t I be able to leave? Am I not a guest in your home? I’m just here to remember my past, right? Or was I just your prisoner all along?" She questioned. Aurora had to know if when she was ever ready to leave, she could. She had never planned to stay forever yet. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
"You are not my prisoner. I never had a prisoner I’ve treated this well. You are free to do as you please but the safest place for you to be is by my side. We’ve seen what happened when you ran away and got trapped by that family. You just need to learn that you cannot always help others. Derek taking those girls back was the better solution. Search high and low for good people to take care of them. Death is better than making them stand trial in front of creatures who despise humans. Does no one understand what those girls now have to go through now?"
"I agree that Derek should’ve taken them back when you told him to but it is late and the girls are in need of food and a warm bath. Would it really hurt anyone if they stayed the night and left in the morning before anyone got wind of it? I would’ve stayed outside the gates if it meant helping them. Werewolves and humans will always attack each other if no one tries to initiate change. Wouldn’t a truce be better than having to worry about war at your doorstep?" To Aurora, the world was a bad place when you couldn’t help two defenseless children who were not a threat.
Vincent took a step forward, tired of Aurora not understanding his point of view but knew it was her lack of knowledge for believing peace was something so simple. "You have been exposed to this world for a few days. It’s not as easy as you think for there to just be peace when fear of people like us has been injected into others. A long time ago, an alpha helped a human woman who he believed had been hurt."
"He took her in and all the other wolves welcomed her with open arms. Treated her, fed her, and sheltered her. He believed that she was somehow his mate sent to him. The story ends predictably as always. She was a spy from a king sent to woo the alpha and give them an opening to strike. A lot of wolves were lost that day and our community ended up moving here. The rule was then made for humans to never be able to step foot near us again," he explained.
"I don’t think those two little girls are in on a plan with the king or anyone else," Aurora said, truly believing the girls were just innocent children looking for someone to protect them. She understood why he refused to take in other humans but these were little children on the brink of starvation.
"Anyone could’ve gotten creative and decided to use children instead of a woman or man. I won’t just accept the risk and have this community engulfed in war."
"Then, if it were true the king or anyone else who sent the children here to help them break-in, you have a bigger problem because it would mean he knows where your community is and he knew each time Derek visited what he was and had the children planted there. Forgive me but I don’t think anyone knew Derek is a werewolf and what happened to the children was plotted from the beginning. This is a mere coincidence," Aurora truly believed this. She had felt deep down that the girls were nothing but innocent.
"You can’t take that chance with everyone. The girls are now going to be on trial and I hope you can stomach the things you will hear at this trial. I offered a better solution and no one wanted to take it. All of you are stubborn." They loved painting him as the bad guy when all of them knew the rules and the fate of those two children if they stayed here. In his own way, he was saving the children with his other two options of taking them back or killing them.
No one understood the hard decisions he had to make to protect others. One slip up from him could cost everyone here to be put in danger. Having every wolf’s life in his hands was a hard responsibility. They had made it this far with few loved ones lost because of his judgment.
"I don’t want to hear about this anymore. You will see it for yourself soon enough why things cannot be done as easily as you think. I apologize if I made you think I can do all that you ask for when it comes to things outside of this house. Enjoy your dinner," Vincent said before making his way up the stairs to go back to his room.
When he was gone, Aurora slapped her face wondering why she allowed their disagreement to get this far. She truly understood why he didn’t want to let outsiders in but looking at defenseless children already beaten up by the world, how could she not want to do anything and everything to help them? They had no one else but each other and the last thing they needed to hear was death being a better option for them.
It reminded her of something she heard the Hamilton maids speaking of when she was younger. They couldn’t have known everything about her background was a lie back then. When news started to travel around that there was another child spotted with strange white hair in the Hamilton home, some people started to speculate the family had a ghost living with them. It was only until an employee confirmed an actual young girl had been living there all along did the community assume Nathaniel had a secret child hiding. ƒгeewёbnovel.com
Minnie confirmed this to be true and even the maids had started to talk about Aurora’s life in the future. They spoke of how being a child born outside of marriage was bad but to be a child born from a husband’s mistress would be even worse. Society would forever remind the child of what their mother did. The maids continued to speak of how death would be a better option for Aurora than having to face the cruel world that would never let her forget what she was.
"And that was all a lie," Aurora mumbled going upstairs as she wasn’t in the mood to eat.
Minnie, Nathaniel, and Rachel had all lied about her being the daughter of the mistress but Aurora lived that as her truth each day not knowing she wasn’t a part of the family. Hearing the harsh words from family and friends of the Hamiltons that visited the home, she stood at her window one night tired of what the world had to say to her. With teary eyes and trembling feet, she stepped forward ready to end it all. Fortunately, two pairs of hands had grabbed hold of her and stopped her from falling to her death.
Regina and Samuel assured her death was not the right thing to do and promised that life would get better. That there was a rainbow at the end of every storm. In the present Aurora now knew she wasn’t human and probably would’ve survived the fall but if she wasn’t, she would’ve died with regret of not trying to make the best of her life and finding a place she belonged to. Aurora had been ashamed of thinking about dying and hated death ever being presented as a better option since then.
