Chapter 247: Chapter 247 The Safe

Elara

Dominic’s study had a safe.

I’d never really thought about it before. Not once. It was just part of the furniture—black metal, built into the wall behind his desk, half-hidden by that framed wedding photo of us from the courthouse

But now? After everything Zack dropped in my lap this afternoon? I couldn’t stop looking at it.

What the hell was in there?

After we confessed our feelings for each other, Dominic handed me everything. Bank account logins. His phone password. His email. His Venmo, for God’s sake. I never asked. He just gave it to me one day and said, "I don’t keep secrets from my mate."

But that safe? He never mentioned it once.

If he trusted me with his money, his phone, his entire digital life, then what was so important that he locked it away?

I walked over to it. Crouched down. The keypad glowed faintly in the dim light.

I tried my birthday first. Four beeps. Red light.

Wrong.

Our anniversary.

Beep beep beep beep. Red light.

The date we got our marriage license.

Red light again.

I sat back on my heels and rubbed my face. This was insane. I was being crazy. Dominic probably kept boring crap in there. Old contracts. Property deeds. Maybe his grandfather’s watch or something.

But my hands were shaking as I reached for the keypad again.

His birthday.

Beep beep beep— Red light.

"Son of a bitch," I muttered.

"Luna Elara?"

I nearly jumped out of my skin.

Linda was standing in the doorway. Hands folded. Expression apologetic. "I’m so sorry to interrupt. But there’s a guest here to see you."

I scrambled to my feet, brushing off my knees. "A guest?"

"Yes. A Dr. Reed. She said it’s urgent."

My stomach dropped.

Quinn? What the hell is she doing here?

I schooled my face into something calm. "Take her to the sitting room. I’ll be right there."

Linda nodded and disappeared.

I stood there for a second, breathing.

People kept showing up. Kept telling me things. Kept pulling at the loose threads of my life until I felt like I was unraveling.

I didn’t want to deal with this. I didn’t want to deal with anyone.

But she was already here.

I walked out of the study and headed down the hall.

---

Quinn was already sitting on the cream couch when I walked in. Legs crossed. Hands in her lap. She looked up and smiled when she saw me.

"Elara. Good to see you again."

I didn’t sit down. I stayed by the door with my arms crossed. "Dr. Reed. I wasn’t expecting you. Dominic is out of town."

I had no idea if she was here for me or if she was hoping to find him. Either way, it felt weird. You don’t just show up at someone’s house like this.

Quinn’s smile stayed put. "I know. I’m not here for him. I’m here for you."

I raised an eyebrow. "Why?"

She let out a breath. "I know this is forward. Showing up at your door out of nowhere. But I’m leaving the country soon, and I wanted to talk to you before I go."

"Let me guess," I said. "You’re going to tell me something about Dominic. Some secret I don’t know. Something that’s supposed to make me doubt him."

Quinn blinked. She looked surprised.

I stepped closer. "I know you had feelings for him, Dr. Reed. So if you’re here to stir up trouble, save it. I’m not interested."

She looked at me for a second. Then she laughed quietly and shook her head.

"That’s not what this is," she said. "Actually, what I’m about to tell you might make you love him more."

My throat got tight.

I didn’t sit down. I didn’t move. I just waited.

Quinn leaned forward. Her face got softer. "I’ll be honest with you. I did have feelings for Alpha Dominic. When I came back to the States, part of me was hoping we could pick things back up. And I wanted to meet the woman he wouldn’t stop talking about."

The word hit me hard.

"But here’s what you need to know," Quinn said. "When Alpha Dominic was recovering from his injuries, he went through hell. I was on his rehab team. And during that time, our psych team diagnosed him with severe depression."

My heart stopped.

Depression?

I stared at her. The word didn’t make sense. Dominic was strong. Confident. Unshakeable.

"What?" My voice was barely a whisper. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

Quinn’s face was serious now. No smile. No games. Just a doctor telling me the truth.

"He was in a really dark place," she said quietly. "The kind of dark that doesn’t just let go."
