Chapter 190: Chapter 190
Audie looked concerned at Valentin’s hesitation and lack of enthusiasm, had he been too hopeful after all? Did Vale not want to come along anymore?
"Fine, let’s go." Valentin got to his feet, hopefully, if it was dark enough, he wouldn’t have to worry about hiding his hickey.
Just as they stepped out of Audie’s dorm room, they both bumped into Jacques who froze at the sight of them. "Fancy seeing you both here,"
Audie immediately shrank back at the sight of the taller Alpha and Valentin caught onto this, and quickly hatched a plan. If Jacques came along, Audie would be too occupied with the other to pay much attention to him, which was exactly what Valentin needed.
"We were just about to do some exploring of an abandoned cellar, want to tag along?" He blurted out.
Audie’s visceral groan of misery almost made Valentin regret his actions, almost. Because Jacques immediately jumped on the offer, slipping in between them and giving all of his attention to Audie, it was all going according to plan... well, not everything.
"Is that a bug bite on your neck, Valentin?" Jacques spoke up, a knowing look in his hazel-green eyes. freeweɓnovel.cøm
Valentin immediately slapped a hand over it in horror, stumbling over his words. "O-Of course, from when we went camping."
"It looks really red, maybe you should get it looked at." The annoying Alpha went right on.
Audie immediately came over, concern in his eyes, "Let me see, does it hurt?"
Valentin helplessly took away his hand, expecting Audie to figure it out immediately but instead, his friend just made concerned sounds and comments about how much of a nasty bite it was.
Valentin jabbed an elbow in Jacques’ side when it was all over, "Do that again and you’re getting kicked out of this exploration team." He whispered tightly.
Jacques rubbed his side, an unrepentant expression on his handsome face. "My bad, my bad... By the way, did the bug have a name?"
"Shut it." He snapped, attracting Audie’s attention.
"What’s going on?" He perked up.
"Nothing," Valentin was quick to say, going over to Audie’s side to put some distance between him and Jacques. Now that he didn’t have to hide the mark from Audie, he was less anxious, as long as Jacques remembered to keep his lips sealed.
Audie led the way to the abandoned storehouse that held nothing but traumatizing memories for Valentin. He noted that the building that was overrun with vines hadn’t changed since their visit in their first year, if anything, it was even more dilapidated.
When Audie led the way inside the building, he found himself wishing that their destination was the storehouse and not the cellar underneath. He walked in the middle and Jacques drew up the rear but he still felt very unsafe, especially when Audie started down a staircase that led underground.
Valentin nearly tripped from fighting the cobwebs that kept getting stuck on his face and fingers, Jacques had to steady him.
"Let me go first," Jacques offered generously.
Valentin didn’t hesitate to take the offer, it got darker the deeper they went and he was starting to seriously contemplate his decision to be here. Audie on the other hand didn’t seem to notice his struggles, hurrying ahead.
All Valentin needed to make up his mind was when they got to the landing at the bottom of the stairs to find a forbidding-looking door. He watched Audie literally bound into the pitch-dark space like he had no sense of self-preservation, Jacques following after him. freewebnσvel.cѳm
Valentin straightened his shoulders and tried to brace himself but one step into the darkness had him shrinking backward. At least the stairs still had some dim lighting but it felt like he was going to fall into a pit of spiders if he entered the door.
He didn’t even bother trying to call out to his two friends that had already long disappeared into the darkness, knowing that if he did, Audie would march right back and drag him in.
He decided to wait at the dim landing, how big could the cellar be? not to mention if the entire underground space was this dark, they would come back out in no time seeing as they wouldn’t be able to see a thing.
That was all the reassurance he need to wait; Time seemed to drag on in the confined space of the landing and every sound he heard was magnified, it made him very jumpy.
So he didn’t stand a chance when a snake dropped from somewhere above him, right onto his hair. Valentin was certain that he blacked out for a millisecond at that moment, he was too distraught to even scream, running up the stairs so fast that the snake got dislodged.
He didn’t stop running though, dashing right out of the abandoned storehouse only to slam into someone.
"Valentin?" The very last voice he wanted to hear, called his name, distressingly familiar hands supporting his waist.
Valentin cursed under his breath, wondering if he should have just braved the snake instead. He somehow managed to step back without tripping over his own feet and plastered a fake smile on his face, "Alexander, why are you here?" He asked with a calm that he wasn’t feeling.
The Alpha Prince looked past him like he was trying to figure out what he had been running so frantically from, "I saw you three heading in this direction while I was at the staff building... where are the others?"
"That’s not important, you didn’t have to follow us..." Valentin trailed off when he saw that Alexander’s attention was fixed on a spot behind him, and he turned around without asking. "Oh, are the others- Aaahh!" He jumped in fright, it was the same snake that had jumped him, it was coming back to finish what it had started.
"Move!" He shoved the other Alpha out of the way, dashing out of the storehouse like he initially planned to, leaving behind Alexander with the snake.
Alexander stared at the harmless garden snake that had gone still at the scream from Valentin, it’s little head perked up like it was concerned, then he turned around and chased after his jumpy roommate.
If you asked Alexander why he was going through all this trouble, he wouldn’t be able to provide an answer. Perhaps, it was just fascinating to find someone who treated him like everyone else.
