Chapter 156: Chapter 156

The activities at the lake sufficiently calmed down afterward, and they did manage to get some swimming done and some more water wrestling.

Henri felt drained when he stepped out of the water, feeling a chill although the sun was up overhead. It was about time for lunch so everyone had to get out of the water to get to work preparing their meal for the afternoon.

After lunch, Henri immediately retired to his tent for a nap, Louis’ worried eyes watching him.

They had spent most of the day playing around again so Louis called them to heel, they needed to get some fishing done, as well as gather fruits and more wood because they were running out.

"I need everyone to pitch in so that we’ll have all that we need before it gets dark," He said gravely, flicking his gaze from Alpha to Alpha.

To his surprise they were very cooperative, Alois and Dio offering to gather wood and even though they planned to do this with their bows in tow, Louis conveniently turned a blind eye to it. Valentin offered to go fishing so naturally, Jacques and Audie also volunteered.

"Yeah, no." He immediately stopped them, knowing that with Audie present they wouldn’t be getting anything done. "Audie, you’ll stay behind to keep an eye on the campsite," He decided, turning to Claude and Alexander. "And you two are also on fishing duty."

"Hey! Why am I the only one left behind?" Audie immediately protested. freewebnovёl.ƈom

Louis just went right on, "I’ll gather fruits with Cecil," He concluded, "Anyone unsatisfied with the decisions?"

"Hell yeah! I am!" Audie immediately spoke up.

"Great! I’m happy we could all come to an understanding." He said in a cheery voice, taking Cecil’s wrist so they could get to work.

Soon the campsite emptied, leaving a grumbling Audie behind. He sat on a log and reached down to pick a pebble only to launch it across the campsite, visibly displeased.

He wasn’t pleased to be stuck all alone there with nothing to do, he didn’t even have company because Henri was fast asleep in his tent. Maybe he should try taking a nap too? He immediately scrapped the thought, not because he was told to keep an eye out but because he knew that he wouldn’t be able to fall asleep.

He paced around the length of the circular clearing, wishing that he at least got to see Dio and Alois shoot something down. Why wasn’t he allowed to go off with the other groups then?

He sighed and sat down again, knowing that there was no use beating himself up over it when they were already long gone. He would put up with it this time but next time he would make sure that Jacques got put in time out instead.

That thought calmed him down somewhat, he got up again to find a sturdy branch to wave around and scribble on the ground with, needing to occupy himself.

Over at the lakeside, the group sent off to fish were quite successful, peacefully reeling in fishes with their rods.

Jacques stood off to the side with Valentin by his side while Claude and Alexander stood off together.

"Do you think Audie will be fine?" Valentin blurted out without meaning to, worry causing a deep furrow between his brows.

He felt like he had been a little too mean to Audie, especially on the camping trip, it wasn’t like him to ignore his friend, it made him feel guilty.

Jacques glanced at him, "You could ask him yourself when we get back." freewebnoveℓ.com

Valentin whipped around in surprise, he hadn’t been expecting a response from Jacques. "I’ll uh... I’ll do that, thanks."

Jacques threw his arm around the other and chuckled, "You’re going to let the fish on your hook get away."

Valentin blinked in surprise at this, he had been so distracted that he didn’t even notice, he immediately started reeling the fish in.

"Dom would be sad to miss this," Dio said when they found a little clearing in the woods some distance from the campsite.

"The loud idiot will only chase the birds away." Alois scoffed, setting up his arrow and aiming at a fruit at the top of a tall tree.

Dio caught it with ease when it dropped, staring blankly at the impaled fruit in his hand with an arrow sticking out of it. "I don’t think it’s our job to gather fruit."

Alois took the fruit from the other Alpha, yanked the arrow out, and then tossed the ruined fruit over a shoulder. "I’m just warming up."

Dio’s mismatched gaze followed the discarded fruit as it sailed through the air and fell a little distance away to the ground. "Don’t waste food,"

Alois had long adapted to Dio so he didn’t bat an eye at this dry delivery, keeping his gaze on the open sky instead. "I’ll shoot down all the birds if you don’t---" His taunt was cut short when the unmistakable sound of Cecil and Louis’ voices reached them.

Dio had seemed distracted before, his unwavering stare fixed on the fruit on the ground but he perked up the moment he heard Louis scream. Before Alois could even react, the other Alpha was already hauling ass, heading in the direction that the sounds had come from.

Alois frowned, immediately following Dio. There was nothing dangerous in the woods to elicit that reaction from them both, they also weren’t the squeamish type to be frightened by bugs or worms, so just what could it be?

Audie straightened up when he heard rustling in the shrubs close to the campsite, he would have thought it was one of the others that had gone off to gather wood or fruits if it wasn’t coming from the opposite direction from where they had gone off in.

They couldn’t have gone around the campsite, right? He slowly rose to his feet, nearly dropping the branch in his hand when he caught sight of the cause of the rustling, his expression darkening.

’What the fuck??’
