Chapter 144: Chapter 144

Audie frowned when Jacques still didn’t move, wondering what he said wrong this time. "You want to be his best friend too? That’s not fair, you’ve got Nael..." He trailed off, seeming to think about nothing.

He made a sound of displeasure when Jacques didn’t react, pushing himself off the wall to keep moving. "Fine, you can follow me, just don’t be annoying." He grumbled, noting that Jacques did move this time.

Was the idiot drunk? When had he ever listened to Audie?

He pushed it out of his mind though, walking down the rapidly darkening passageway. Was he a little too drunk or was it starting to get darker?

He turned around to glance at Jacques who was still silently following behind him. Why was he so quiet now? Audie never did well with silence.

"Let’s call a truce." He blurted out, needing to touch the wall to guide himself, that was how dark it had gotten.

Either Jacques didn’t notice the encroaching darkness or it didn’t bother him because he made no comments about it.

"A truce?" He finally spoke up.

Audie nodded although there was no way that Jacques could see his action. He didn’t like to upset Vale, contrary to popular opinion and he knew that soon enough Valentin would get tired of him constantly arguing with Jacques and do something drastic, like leave Audie.

He stopped again, practically falling against the wall, legs too wobbly to hold him upright. "Over Vale," He said nicely, holding out his hand although it was too dark to see.

Jacques glanced down though, his expression unreadable. "And what does this truce entail?"

"Naturally, that Vale gets to choose me over everyone else and you’ll stop butting in," Audie said self-assuredly, leaning his head against the wall, his eyes heavylidded.

"That doesn’t sound like a fair truce," Jacques crossed his arms, his voice quiet.

"Fine, fine," He waved his outstretched hand, dropping it to his side. He didn’t own Vale after all. "We’ll let him choose instead, how about that?" He offered rather, straightening up from the wall.

See, he could be agreeable when he wanted to be...

Jacques considered his offer for a few heartbeats, "Fine," He grudgingly agreed, his face hidden in the shadows.

"Wine fixes everything," Audie mumbled to himself, pleased that the issue had been resolved so easily, he had been expecting Jacques to make it more difficult. He was confident that Vale would choose him every time so he wasn’t worried. Now for them to continue exploring...

Audie tried to push off the wall for the second time, barely seeing the ground in front of him. He miscalculated... or more like his limbs weren’t agreeing with him so he fell back against the stone wall, laughter bubbling up in his throat.

Somehow, although he was uncoordinated, he had managed to undo the buttons of his dress shirt and sleeves, that dark blue uniform slipping slightly to expose his shoulder.

His laughter died down when Jacques moved forward and suddenly slammed his hands unerringly against the wall on either side of his head. How did he even manage to see what he was doing?

... what was he doing?...

"Did you trip?" Audie taunted as the realization hit, laughter in his voice only for all that to fade away when Jacques pressed closer.

The fog cleared from his head remarkably fast, it was so dark that he couldn’t see Jacques’ expression although the other’s face was right in front of him.

"Oi! Get off me, drunk idiot!" He immediately shoved at him, faltering when he didn’t budge.

Was Jac always that strong or did the wine give him superpowers?

"If you’re going to trip and fall, do it somewhere else." He scolded, his hands shoving at Jacques the only thing keeping them apart. "There’s all this cushiony stone floor just waiting for you..."

Jacques didn’t seem to fall for his teasing, making Audie roll his eyes. He knew that the Alpha wouldn’t let the truce happen so easily and painlessly, there had to be a catch.

"Are you still mad about the truce?" He asked, starting to get huffy. He didn’t appreciate being in such close contact with another Alpha - Vale didn’t count.

Audie leaned back in shock when Jacques caught his bare wrists and pulled them to his side. Again, how the hell was he seeing? The lights in the passageway they had gone down must have dimmed completely because he couldn’t see a single one.

He felt strangely nervous when Jacques bent down till his lips were by his ear, his breath hitching. frёewebηovel.cѳm

"What do you think?" Jacques asked in a soft whisper.

... wait... that wasn’t right, why was Jac bending over? They were the same height! It wasn’t like you could store some extra height in your back pocket...

His chaotic thoughts were interrupted when Jacques pressed even closer, able to close the distance between them with Audie’s hands out of the way.

Audie was certain that Jacques could feel his heartbeat from how loudly it thumped, his hands clenching into fists helplessly by his side.

... what did he think? He thought that right then would be the perfect time to head bash Jac or to knee the gutsy bastard in the nads...

What was it then? Was he angry about the truce or not?

What was going on in his empty skull anyway? Did he get too drunk and mistake Audie for an Omega? He should really kick Jac, why was he hesitating?

He was jolted back to the present by the sensation of Jacques’ sharp teeth sinking gently into his bare shoulder. The shard of sensation that lanced through him made him flinch and yelp, an embarrassing sound.

Jacques’ quickly put some distance between them, if Audie could see his expression right then, he would see two emotions warring in his eyes. One was rueful at the thought of taking things too far, and the other was a dark hunger.

Audie clapped a hand over his mouth, too devastated at his reaction to be properly mad at Jacques. He tried to move and then promptly lost his balance, Jacques immediately reaching out to catch his wrist.

Audie immediately slapped his hand away, his face heated. "Don’t touch me."

Jacques found himself biting back laughter, knowing that he would absolutely get a bloody lip if he did laugh. Frankly, he was more surprised that he didn’t already sport one, "You’ll fall." He said patiently.

Audie huffed, his legs were wobbly and it was certainly because he was drunk, nothing more. "Shut up."
