Chapter 149: Chapter 118: If You Can’t Be the Younger Son-in-law, You Can Be the Older One
"What’s wrong? Is there a problem with the books?"
Chen Jingxian put down her chopsticks and asked nervously.
"No, just come with me."
"Oh, okay."
The two of them stood up and walked out of the shop.
Outside, a tow truck carrying a black GLE was parked on the side of the road.
Passersby all stopped to look.
Some sharp-eyed people had already recognized it as the AMG version of the GLE.
"There are so many rich people in Zhonghai. A car like this must be over a million."
"Whoever bought this car is definitely young. It’s all about the performance."
"That front grille is gorgeous."
Seeing the GLE on the tow truck, even Chen Jingjia, who was waiting in her car down the road, couldn’t help but take a few extra glances.
After coming out of the shop, Chen Jingxian looked around, but she didn’t seem to notice anything out of the ordinary.
"What is it? It doesn’t look like anything’s happening."
"The car I bought you is here."
"Huh? You bought it for me?"
Chen Jingxian had seen the car parked by the road when she came out.
Since she didn’t know anything about cars and wasn’t very interested in them, she hadn’t paid it much mind. She never would have imagined the car was bought for her!
Lin Jiang nodded. "Taking the bus to and from work every day isn’t convenient, so I bought you a car."
"But..."
"No buts. It’s already bought."
Without giving Chen Jingxian another chance to speak, Lin Jiang walked over to the driver.
"You must be Lin Jiang?" the driver asked when he saw Lin Jiang approach.
"Yes."
Lin Jiang nodded, taking out his ID and the purchase invoice.
After confirming everything was in order, Lin Jiang signed the delivery form, took the keys, and climbed onto the flatbed.
The driver got back in his cab and slowly lowered the ramp.
Lin Jiang leaned his head out, watching the rear wheels as he slowly drove the car off the truck.
In the car behind them, Chen Jingjia was stunned for a long moment.
’Doesn’t he already have a Maybach? Why did he buy another Mercedes?’
Before long, Lin Jiang had driven the car off the truck and parked it by the curb. He got out and opened the passenger door.
"From now on, this car is yours. Come on up and check it out."
Chen Jingxian stood there, dazed and bewildered, finding it hard to believe this was real.
In the car behind, Chen Jingjia’s eyes flew wide open.
’He actually bought it for my sister!’
"This is a Mercedes, right? It must have cost a lot, didn’t it?"
"Don’t worry about the price. It’s just something for you to get around in, and it’ll be more convenient when you’re helping me run errands."
As he spoke, Lin Jiang took Chen Jingxian’s hand and helped her into the car.
"Holy shit! This guy is something else. He bought a GLE worth over a million just so his girlfriend has something to drive around in?"
"If a woman is driving it, wouldn’t the standard edition be enough?"
"Maybe the guy’s just loaded. The AMG grille does look better than the standard one."
"Damn it, that guy is the owner of Xiaojiang Noodle Shop! If we eat there for a few more days, he’ll probably fucking buy a Cullinan!"
"I’ve eaten there four times. One of the screws on that engine was paid for with my blood, sweat, and tears."
"I ate there twice. I contributed to two of the rubbers."
Inside her C-Class, when Chen Jingjia heard the price, her heart felt like it did a backflip.
’This car actually costs over a million!’
’That’s enough to buy both of Zhao Qingtian’s X5s, isn’t it?’
’And *he*!’
’He bought it for my sister just to get around in?!’
Chen Jingjia was speechless. The color drained from her face, and her mood turned as gray as the sky above.
Inside the GLE, Lin Jiang looked at the slightly overwhelmed Chen Jingxian.
"What do you think? The interior color is okay, right?"
"It’s a Mercedes, of course it’s okay."
Chen Jingxian didn’t know cars, but she knew Mercedes was a good brand, so it had to be a good car.
"I’m glad to hear you say that."
Chen Jingxian looked at Lin Jiang with her big, dewy eyes. "You spent too much on me."
"I’ve already paid off your mortgage, so what’s one car?" Lin Jiang said with a smile. "Besides, you’re my accountant and secretary. It’s only natural I’d get you a company car."
"If you put it that way, it makes me feel a little better about accepting it."
Chen Jingxian didn’t stay in the car for long.
"Mom and Dad are still inside. Let’s go back first. We can talk about the car later."
"Okay."
After locking the car again, they saw that the old couple had come out of the shop.
Even Li Yuanyuan and Yang Tao had run out to see what the commotion was about.
"Xiaojiang, is that the car you bought for Xianxian?" Chen Jianguo asked in surprise.
"I bought it for her to get around in. She won’t have to squeeze onto the bus anymore."
The old couple didn’t know much about cars, about as much as Chen Jingxian.
They couldn’t tell a good car from a bad one or an expensive one from a cheap one, but they knew the Mercedes brand, and it definitely wasn’t bad.
"Look at you. It’s not easy for you to earn money. Why would you buy her a car?"
’If I don’t spend money on her, how am I supposed to laun—I mean, earn cashback?’
"’Whether it was with the shop or starting the company, she’s helped me a great deal. It’s only right that I thank her,’ Lin Jiang said with a smile."
"’Don’t be strangers. You were always very good to me in the past. When she’s free, she can take you out for a drive. Just consider it my way of showing my respect to you both.’"
The old couple exchanged a look, momentarily at a loss for words.
Their spirits, which had hit rock bottom, were now soaring again.
Getting him back together with their other daughter was impossible, but looking at the situation with him and Xianxian, something seemed to be brewing.
’Even though he couldn’t be their younger son-in-law, from the looks of things, he might just become their elder son-in-law.’
And under the current circumstances, getting him and their younger daughter back together was pointless anyway.
"Xianxian, Lin Jiang has the shop and has started a new company. He must be very busy. When you have free time, you should come over and help him more," Chen Jianguo said.
"Your father is right. We’re not outsiders. Lin Jiang’s career is just getting started, you can’t just stand by and watch at a time like this," Wang Minxia added.
"If you have to, just quit your job. After all, Lin Jiang paid off your mortgage, so there’s no financial pressure now. Come help him out. It would put his mind at ease to have someone he knows and trusts."
"Aiya, I know. I’ve been helping him this whole time."
"Your mother has a point. If you really have to, just quit your job," Chen Jianguo said.
"His company just opened, so there isn’t much business yet. I can handle it in my spare time. Once things get busier, I can think about resigning. It’s not too late."
It was clear that Chen Jingxian had indeed considered resigning, but the time wasn’t right yet.
"I don’t understand the affairs of you young people. You can decide for yourselves," Chen Jianguo said with a cheerful smile, not a trace of gloom left on his face.
"We’re about done eating."
Wang Minxia glanced inside the shop. "Lin Jiang seems busy here, so don’t bother coming back with us. Stay here and help him out."
"Alright."
Knowing that Chen Jingjia was just outside, Chen Jingxian didn’t say anything more.
The two of them stood up and saw the old couple out.
The elderly pair made no effort to hide anything, walking straight to the C-Class parked on the street. As they got in, they even waved goodbye.
Through the car window, Lin Jiang saw Chen Jingjia but chose to ignore her, pretending he hadn’t seen her.
"Mom, Dad, what did you all talk about?"
After her parents got in the car, Chen Jingjia didn’t hurry to drive away.
"Don’t ask about that now. We’ll talk when we get home."
"C’mon, just tell me. What did Lin Jiang say? Did his attitude soften at all?"
"No. You can forget about getting back together. It’s impossible for you two," Chen Jianguo said firmly.
"Even you pleading my case didn’t work? What’s with this guy?"
"You have the nerve to talk about him?" Chen Jianguo snorted. "If you hadn’t done what you did at the wedding, he wouldn’t be this decisive and firm."
"But I already realized I was wrong. He should at least give me another chance."
"Lin Jiang’s attitude is resolute. Stop thinking about it. You won’t get another chance."
"No, I have to go talk to him."
"Stop!"
Chen Jianguo immediately stopped Chen Jingjia, terrified she was about to get out of the car.
Right now, Lin Jiang’s relationship with his older daughter was heating up. He couldn’t let her go and cause trouble.
"Don’t go. His shop is busy. He doesn’t have time to talk to you about this."
"Then that’s all the more reason for me to go. If I help him out, there might still be a chance. His attitude towards me might soften."
"Don’t you dare!"
Wang Minxia stopped Chen Jingjia.
"I’m not feeling well. Let’s just go home quickly."
"What’s wrong? Tell me, I’ll take you to the hospital."
"It’s just my heart. It’s a little uncomfortable. No need for the hospital, I’ll be fine if I lie down at home. Let’s just hurry back."
"Fine, I’ll take you two home first."
...
After seeing the old couple off, Lin Jiang stretched a bit.
"They’re enough to handle the shop. You don’t need to help. Go home and get some rest."
"It’s mainly the car. I’m a little scared to drive it."
"You’ve driven my Maybach. You’re telling me a GLE is going to defeat you?"
"Last time I only dared to drive because you were right next to me. If you’re not with me, I don’t think I can do it."
"That’s simple. I’ll go with you for a practice drive. After an hour or two, you’ll be fine."
"Okay."
After tidying up briefly, the two left the shop and got in the car.
She had only peeked inside earlier. Now it was time for the most satisfying part: peeling off the protective film.
After peeling off the plastic film, Chen Jingxian pulled the seatbelt across her chest, threading it between two massive peaks. A truly magnificent sight.
"Don’t stare."
"Just a quick glance," Lin Jiang said with a smile, tearing his eyes away.
"Driving a new car, I’m a little nervous."
"You’ve driven a Maybach, this is nothing. Besides, you can’t drive without getting a few bumps and scrapes," Lin Jiang said.
"This car has a lot of kick, though, so just take it easy when you’re starting out."
"Got it. Oh, right."
Chen Jingxian looked at Lin Jiang and pointed to the grab handle on the center console. "I’ve been meaning to ask since I drove your car last time. What is this thing for?"
"Well... how do I put this..." Lin Jiang paused. "Just think of it as a grab handle."
"But it *is* a grab handle. What do you mean ’just think of it as a grab handle’?" Chen Jingxian asked, looking at Lin Jiang suspiciously.
"Does it have another function you’re not telling me about?"
"You really want to know?"
"Of course! I have a very strong thirst for knowledge."
"You drive first. I’ll tell you when we get back tonight."
"Fine."
She started the car and tentatively pulled out. Her launch was actually pretty smooth; the car didn’t lurch forward.
Soon, Chen Jingxian was out on the road, gripping the steering wheel so tightly her whole body was stiff.
Lin Jiang was in charge of navigation, directing her wherever the traffic was heaviest.
After a good two hours, she was already driving like a pro, changing lanes with silky smoothness.
Around nine o’clock that evening, Chen Jingxian drove the car back home and let out a heavy sigh of relief.
"How did it feel?"
She unfastened her seatbelt, and her generous curves sprang free from their restraints.
"It’s just too powerful, I can barely handle it. I wish it were a little gentler."
’Erm... no comment on that...’
"Just take it slow. You’ll get used to it."
"We’re home now. Can you tell me what this thing is for?" Chen Jingxian said, pointing at the handle in the middle.
Lin Jiang glanced outside and saw that they were alone.
"You’re sure you want to know?"
"Of course! Hurry up and tell me, what else is it for?"
"Get out of the car first."
"Okay."
They both got out, and Lin Jiang opened the rear door. "You get in first."
Chen Jingxian obediently climbed into the back seat, looking at Lin Jiang with confusion. "And then?"
"And then..." Lin Jiang searched for the right words. "You lean forward, with your body reaching into the front seats, and grab the handle... feel what it’s like..."
Doing as Lin Jiang said, Chen Jingxian leaned her body forward and grabbed the handle.
"This position is so weird. Who sits in a car..."
Halfway through her sentence, Chen Jingxian suddenly fell silent...
