Chapter 787: Chapter 635: Millet Crisp
"How come you’re back so late today?"
"The weather was nice, so I picked a longer route home." Ning Youguang handed the paper bag in her hand to Shi Wangyue, who had opened the door for her.
"What’s this?" Shi Wangyue lowered his head to look at the bag in his hand.
"Millet crisps my senior gave me." After Ning Youguang finished speaking, she remembered that Shi Wangyue probably didn’t know what millet crisps were, so she added, "Her mom makes them herself, sent them from their hometown in Jiangxi to her. She shared some with everyone in our office. They’re pretty good, you should try them."
Shi Wangyue opened the bag and glanced inside, finding that there was indeed a white plastic bag filled with something that looked like pastries.
"Sorry, I’m late. You must be hungry, huh?" Seeing that he seemed interested in the pastries in the bag, Ning Youguang thought he was hungry. "Perfect, you can have a few pieces of millet crisp to tide you over."
Then, remembering that Shi Wangyue didn’t like using plastic bags, especially for holding food, she said, "Just as well, you can take the millet crisps out and put them into a food container."
For someone who was always particular about what he ate, today Shi Wangyue surprisingly didn’t complain about the millet crisps being kept in a plastic bag.
Instead, he reached in, took out the bag of millet crisps from the paper bag, opened it, picked out a whole piece, and put it into his mouth. "Pretty sweet."
"It is very sweet." Ning Youguang said with a smile, "These millet crisps are made with maltose syrup that her mom boiled herself. If you like them, eat more. Maltose is good for the spleen and stomach."
Shi Wangyue swallowed the millet crisp in his mouth and frowned. "A lot of them are broken."
"Don’t let your OCD act up. They’re broken so you can’t eat them?" Ning Youguang gave him a sidelong glance. "My senior’s hometown is in a remote village in Jiujiang, Jiangxi. For her to mail her this batch of millet crisps that she made with her own hands, her mom took three different rides just to get to the county seat and send them out. The fact that we get to eat them is a huge blessing. Appreciate it, President Shi."
Shi Wangyue immediately apologized, "Sorry, my bad."
Ning Youguang reached out and pinched his puffed cheek, still full of millet crisp he hadn’t swallowed yet. "Don’t be so serious."
She laughed and said, "I was just saying it casually."
A smile returned to Shi Wangyue’s eyes. "Since these millet crisps are so precious, I’ll go put them away right now, so we can take our time eating them, make them last till New Year."
Hearing that, Ning Youguang burst out laughing. "What a coincidence. Do you know why we’re getting to eat the millet crisps her mom made at this time of year?"
Shi Wangyue shook his head.
"Because it’s almost New Year."
"?"
Of course Ning Youguang knew that Shi Wangyue still didn’t get it, so she explained, "She said that these millet crisps are something every household in their village back home makes in large batches before New Year."
"How large is ’large’?" Shi Wangyue asked casually, taking another bite of millet crisp.
"A few hundred jin."
"..." Shi Wangyue was almost so shocked he choked. "That much? Do they sell it?"
Ning Youguang shook her head. "Nope, it’s for the family to eat."
"For themselves?" Shi Wangyue was practically dumbfounded. "How do they finish that much?"
Surely they don’t use it as a staple food.
Anyway, Shi Wangyue really couldn’t believe that in Jiangxi there were places where people would use something this sweet as their staple food.
If it’s not a staple, then how do they eat it? How can a rural family go through a few hundred jin of millet crisps in a year?
