Chapter 90: Chapter 48: Soldiers Defeated by a Bowl of Lamb Noodles
After the surgical examination, the majority of them had a poor complexion.
Fang Huai sat outside watching as one by one, they came out looking quite ghastly, and he felt a bit like laughing.
Just now, when it was Fang Huai’s turn, one eye was wide open and the other was only halfway open.
He nearly gave Fang Huai a fright, ready to kick out.
Afterwards, the old man delivered his conclusion: "Kid, it’s a bit asymmetrical..."
Which made everyone burst into laughter.
Fang Huai gritted his teeth at the sound, really wanting to have the old man undress for an examination so he could see if he was symmetrical!
The new recruit beside Fang Huai was even more exaggerated, practically a cyclops, and with a confused gaze.
But this time, during the rectal examination, the doctors were much more cautious and obviously didn’t get as close as they did during the first military health check.
Everyone was aware that during the military health check everybody had taken a bath, but the bathing conditions in the new recruit group... were not nearly as good.
When Yue Tao came out, he looked like he had contracted a terminal disease.
With a funereal expression, he sat next to Fang Huai, "It’s over,
they even said it might affect my function in the future! What am I going to do! I’m still a virgin!"
Fang Huai was speechless: "With your looks, you’re worried about that?"
After speaking, he patted Yue Tao’s shoulder, consoling him, "Don’t worry, you’ll probably be a virgin for life,
"Fang Huai! Who’s your daddy?"
Yue Tao immediately tried to hit Fang Huai on the head. Fang Huai, intent on testing his own reflexes, blocked each time Yue Tao reached out. After a few times, Yue Tao was shocked.
"Damn, you’re so quick to react!"
Fang Huai couldn’t be bothered with him and just let his eyes wander over the surrounding nurses.
He didn’t spare the young female doctors either.
Old, middle-aged, young, and teenagers.
He’d pass on the old.
Each has their own beauty, right!
Can’t flirt, can’t even take a look?
Seeing him like this, Yue Tao wanted to call him an old lecher, but thinking about himself, his face fell again.
"It’s all over... My happiness for this lifetime is over."
Fang Huai patted Yue Tao’s shoulder again, chuckling.
"Relax, you’ve hit the jackpot, ...this trip wasn’t in vain!
Once you get to the squadron, just take your medical book to the nearby Triple-A Hospital, the surgery is free, just don’t smile after the operation, with your personality, it’s easy to laugh and pop the stitches... and also, don’t watch porn."
"Group three, everybody out! Follow me to the Department of Internal Medicine!"
Instructor Liang Longhui, who had just appeared in the past two days, came out of a clinic and began to gather people at the rest area in the hall.
Once everyone was lined up, Liang Longhui looked at them sternly.
"None of you ate anything this morning, right?"
Nobody spoke.
"First Company already had two problems, if you ate something, or did any tricks, speak up now while it’s still timely, you can retest in three days!
If a serious problem is found, you will be discharged! Don’t joke with your future!"
At this announcement, someone curiously asked, "Instructor, what’s the problem you’re talking about?"
Liang Longhui, clearly not one for jokes, replied with a stern face, "Don’t ask about it! If there’s no issue, fine! If there is one, report it immediately!"
Immediately, someone in the crowd made a face, "What’s the fuss about, it’s just one extra star, it’s still not a full company... Wang Lian’s squadron is better."
Fang Huai couldn’t help but smile.
He knew what was going on without having to ask.
Guizhou has a famously delicious dish—lamb rice noodles.
That year, two new recruits had always wanted to go home. Hearing about this, they secretly stashed away some money, and during the chaos of entering the hospital that morning, slipped into a small alley’s lamb rice noodle shop and slurped down a few big spoonfuls each.
For some unknown reason, blood work, liver function, and gastro-intestinal tests didn’t show any abnormalities, but the urinalysis was positive.
The lack of abnormalities and the positive drug test were what made it scary.
In the army’s physical examination, especially in the new recruit group, what does a positive drug test imply?
The whole corps established a special investigation team that very day.
Had those two soldiers not later clarified the situation and taken the investigation team to the lamb rice noodle shop to prove their story, the group leadership would have been in hot water.
The outcome was that the two soldiers were sent back, but apparently, the noodle shop owner was an oddball who ended up being fined over twenty-thousand and later put up a sign saying "Military Health Examination Personnel Not Allowed" which then got him reported to the consumer association.
This shop owner’s subsequent developments were of great interest to the firefighting soldiers. It’s said he went into selling medical masks and drugs.
No one knows if he made any money from it.
...
There were many people for the medical examination today, and apart from some tests that required a particular order, everyone just found a clinic and queued up.
At the Department of Internal Medicine, Hao Chengbin was already waiting at the entrance.
Wang Jian was there too.
"Has Fang Huai arrived?" Hao Chengbin asked loudly.
Hao Chengbin, a seasoned non-commissioned officer, wasn’t assigned any duty leading squads today and could have taken the day off, but he came specifically to check on Fang Huai’s ECG and ultrasound results.
Liang Longhui, walking ahead, felt the name sound familiar and turned back to look.
Behind him, Fang Huai also heard and raised his hand from the back.
"I’m here, squad leader!"
Seeing him arrive, Hao Chengbin went back inside for another ECG session.
Fang Huai wanted to laugh; Old Hao was probably genuinely worried that he had an issue and had come to greet the doctor on his behalf.
As a third-level sergeant, the doctors here were all senior military officers, not even from the same department, who would care about him?
However, it seemed today’s follow-up didn’t provide individual reports for each person, but rather, the cadres leading the squads had a list and were responsible for recording data. It was possible that some results could actually be manipulated.
The hospital probably turned a blind eye, so long as the issues weren’t too severe; they allowed the units conducting health checks to take the list back and compare it against health standards and recruit data, leaving it up to the units to make their own decisions.
If they felt a recruit was worth keeping, they would do so.
Therefore, a reexamination was scheduled for three days later, and the soldiers returning then were likely those with one problem or another.
Liang Longhui looked at Wang Jian and asked,
"Didn’t Old Hao say he wasn’t leading a squad? Why did he come then?"
Wang Jian nodded towards Fang Huai and chuckled, "Their deputy squad leader might have a minor heart condition; he just wanted to come and see."
"You can be a deputy squad leader with a heart problem?" Liang Longhui frowned but then, as if remembering something, suddenly said.
"Oh! That’s the guy who passed out doing push-ups, right?"
"Yes, that’s it! The Chief of Staff even came that morning. I specifically called you to come back; I had to call several times before you answered! You didn’t even ask for leave at the time, lucky no one came to check on the Brigade Department!"
Liang Longhui clicked his tongue, looking somewhat guilty as he said, "You had it tough. You take a break next time. I’ll handle the Brigade Department tasks."
Wang Jian waved it off, "Forget it. It’s been manageable lately, thanks to this young guy. His computer skills are pretty good; he’s been helping Huang Yi with the paperwork. Everything else is just calling drills and leading meetings. You’ve never led soldiers before; take your time to get familiar."
"Oh?" Liang Longhui said, looking back at Fang Huai again before shaking his head with a smile.
"What a shame. The soldier Lian Xu from our squadron was reluctant to come and lead soldiers with me. He’s truly outstanding in every area, communication and computer skills especially, and he’s even been trained as an equipment technician. If he’d come, we wouldn’t have to worry about anything in our company. Now we wouldn’t have to rely on these rookies filling in if there were no old tigers in the mountains."
With that comment, Liang Longhui was essentially firing shots broadly. Born in a big city, he somewhat looked down on the old soldiers who just buried themselves in physical training.
Physical training is important, but it’s the all-arounders who are truly valuable.
Wang Jian laughed and shook his head, "Alright, I got it. You’ve mentioned that soldier Lian Xu several times already. Isn’t he going to special duty?"
At this, Liang Longhui expressed regret, "Yeah, our Zhongshan Squadron is just cultivating talent for the special duty teams. As soon as one is trained, they’re poached. It’s getting tough to manage the soldiers!"
"You wouldn’t be planning to scout for someone to take back to your company during this visit, would you?" Wang Jian probed.
Liang Longhui raised his eyebrows, "What’s there to scout for? The non-commissioned officers from Liupanshui, aside from Xiang Zhiyuan who is from our squadron, the others are just average."
"I was talking about the new recruits."
"Even less so. What can you tell about a new recruit group in three months? Whatever they’re assigned to, they’re stuck with. It’s more important to develop the non-commissioned officers. These rookie soldiers aren’t worth much yet; when they are sent to the troops, they just clean and do miscellaneous chores. The real main forces are still the non-commissioned officers!"
Liang Longhui expressed his disdain.
Wang Jian looked very pleased and quickly affirmed the point.
"Alright then! Don’t fight me over them! Otherwise, you’d be letting me down for covering your shift!"
Liang Longhui waved it off, "No fight, no fight. Only you guys value them so highly. I’ve noticed, both you and Hao Chengbin have your eyes on that Fang Huai, right? Rest assured, I’m not interested!" fɾēewebnσveℓ.com
The arrogance in his words was nearly overflowing from the hospital.
...
After waiting in line for over an hour, they finally finished the internal medicine checkup.
During the ECG, after the doctor had connected various leads to his limbs and chest, Fang Huai felt a bit itchy and scratched a couple of times. The doctor told him not to move and to breathe steadily.
Hao Chengbin took the opportunity to come in as well, standing outside the curtain waiting for the results, and reminded Fang Huai too.
"Breathe slowly, or it might affect the test results!"
The doctor sat down to observe for a while and couldn’t help frowning, muttering to himself.
"This P wave (atrial contraction) and QRS wave (ventricular contraction)... why are they so stable?"
Unable to help himself, he looked on in more amazement, turning to Fang Huai.
"Did you have... surgery on your heart?"
Fang Huai shook his head, equally curious. Just how different was a heart modified by the system?
Outside, Hao Chengbin heard and immediately grew anxious, leaning in to ask, "Doctor, is there a problem?"
The doctor turned around, saw an old non-commissioned officer, and replied, "Ah... no problem, very healthy! Just a bit slow... it’s normal though, very stable, extremely stable!"
The more the doctor inspected, the more incredulous he became.
Could the machine be broken?
A heart rate without fluctuation, maintaining 60 the whole time, was something she had never seen before!
