Chapter 316: Chapter 316: Video Call with Miles

Her curled lashes fluttered twice as she looked at the person on the video call.

Miles Sherman looked like he had just gotten out of the shower. He was wearing a loose-fitting T-shirt from The Military, and his hair seemed to have faint droplets of water in it, though it was hard to tell.

Even though she was no stranger to intimacy, Zoe Pierce still found herself unconsciously growing tense.

She nodded softly. "Mm..."

Miles’s expression was gentle. His private room wasn’t large, but it guaranteed his privacy.

He leaned against the headboard, looking at Zoe. "Have you been busy? I haven’t heard from you lately."

Forget calling—Zoe had been so busy she hadn’t even sent a single message. Even when he texted, her reply was always that she was busy with her lesson plans.

The Military’s training schedule didn’t line up with Zoe’s, and for the better part of a month, they had kept missing each other.

Tonight, Miles had only started the video call on a whim, just to try his luck.

He wanted to see her.

Of course Zoe was busy, but after what Miles said, she couldn’t bring herself to continue working.

Her thoughts immediately drifted from her lesson plans to him.

Closing her notebook, she licked her bottom lip, adding a gleam of moisture to its dry surface.

"I’ll get back to work later," she said, standing up.

Miles watched her walk from the study all the way to her bedroom, the bright lighting instantly giving way to a dim glow.

It was as if the atmosphere had suddenly been tinged with an intimate hue.

Their eyes met. Though they weren’t in the same space, they both recognized the dark glimmer in each other’s gaze.

"Zoe." Miles’s voice was a little lower than it had been when she was in the study.

Zoe leaned against the chaise lounge, softly calling his name in return. "Miles."

Miles’s breathing suddenly grew heavier. ’I only wanted to see her face, to talk with her for a bit...’

But after only a few words, all pretense was lost.

She looked up at him, her eyes glistening. There was a hint of nervousness in them, along with something else she couldn’t quite name.

His Adam’s apple bobbed, once, then again.

"Baby, did you miss me? I miss you a lot." The words, which he had never even considered saying, slipped out of his mouth as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

Zoe bit her lip gently. "Mhm."

They fell silent again for a considerable time.

Once they started talking, things were bound to take a turn. freewebnovёl.ƈom

In the end, it was Zoe who broke the silence. Her voice was soft, but in the quiet room, every breath was audible. "Miles... do you want to see me?"

Miles’s eyes were fixed on the screen, where her image was projected so clearly it was as if she were really right there in front of him.

Her voice continued, "Will anyone walk in?"

Miles’s hand suddenly clenched the bedsheet. His deep voice was inexplicably hoarse. "No, it’s late."

He could see her nervousness.

And, for some reason, he grew tense as well.

Through the screen, he saw Zoe seeming to wait for his answer. His throat was suddenly parched. "I... I want to see you... baby..."

It was as if all reason had been stripped away, leaving behind nothing but a raw, unbearable knot of desire.

He, too, was letting lust cloud his judgment, forgetting his initial, simple intention.

The dim, yellow light seemed to wrap Zoe’s skin in a honey-colored glow. Her black hair cascaded down, barely concealing the view of her chest.

She moved her device further away, enough for him to see most of her upper body.

Beside her lay the nightgown she had just been wearing.

But now, his vision was filled with pale skin, gleaming like polished amber.

Miles’s throat felt itchy. ’I just wanted to tell her I didn’t start this video call with the intention of doing anything.’

"Would you hate this, baby?" he asked, his rationality completely gone. "Letting me... see you like this..."

Zoe didn’t want to answer. Her courage had been all but spent the moment she asked Miles if he wanted to see her.

She just shook her head, the blush on her cheeks already creeping down her neck.

Yet, her appearance seemed to encourage Miles to do something to her.

The light on Miles’s end went out.

Only a single, tiny lamp remained on, instantly shrouding his face in shadow.

"Then... what do you want to do, baby?" Miles’s voice grew even hoarser, deeper. "Do you... want to listen to me?"

’As long as Zoe wants to end this, I can stop immediately,’ he thought.

But the person on the screen was indulging him completely.

Hearing his words, she only whispered, "Okay."

She, too, felt this was going a bit far. The cool air brushing against the small of her back was enough to give her goosebumps.

Zoe also knew how gentle Miles could be.

If she showed even the slightest hint of discomfort or reluctance, Miles would probably stop at once.

She didn’t want Miles to stop.

With both of them having summoned the courage to get this far, Zoe couldn’t say she didn’t have her own desires.

They had done everything but take the final step.

A video call wasn’t like being with a real person, but the unreality of the screen added a hint of the forbidden.

She wouldn’t feel the touch of his calloused palms, nor the heat of his chest.

There was only his voice, as gentle as ever.

Zoe’s heart skipped a beat, and the pen in her hand clattered onto the desk. ’There’s nothing to be afraid of,’ she thought. ’After all, it’s not like anything can really happen.’

As she nodded, the voice on the other end paused for a moment. Then, it came. "Tuck all your hair behind your shoulders."

The courage Zoe had felt just a second ago instantly dissolved into a much deeper sense of shyness.

Her lips were bitten a shade of crimson.

With her gaze lowered, her slender, pale fingers swept all of her long black hair from her front and tucked it behind her shoulders.

She no longer dared to look up.

Her hands clenched unconsciously as she murmured, "Miles..."

The pink flush on her neck had already spread downwards, adding more color to her snow-white skin.

In the semi-darkness, Miles rested his head against the headboard.

The view on the other side was completely revealed to him. A single glance was all it took for his blood to surge, rushing straight to one particular place.

"Baby... baby..." His hoarse, masculine voice suddenly became very soft as he murmured her pet name over and over.

Zoe tilted her head, looking away from the screen. Her long neck was taut, the tension visible in the lines of her throat.

"Baby... you’re so beautiful..." Miles praised her.

Zoe was used to hearing people praise her looks, but Miles’s words made her tense up, because she knew he wasn’t complimenting her face...

She glanced around nervously, her mind a bit of a blank. Her eyes inadvertently met Miles’s, and suddenly, her mouth moved faster than her brain. "Miles... I want to see you, too..."

It seemed he hadn’t expected Zoe to make such a request.

The rustle of clothing sounded, and in the next moment, a lean, muscular chest filled her vision.

Now Zoe found herself wanting to look, yet not daring to.

She bit her lip hard, wanting nothing more than to slap her own mouth.

Especially when he pulled the camera back, revealing even more.

His powerful, narrow waist; his firm muscles.

And Miles’s eyes, now gradually darkening with desire.

"Miles..."

"I’m here..."

Miles’s eyes were fixed on the part of her that was revealed now that her hair was tucked back. His voice was pleading. "Baby, hold them for me, okay?"

Zoe’s breath hitched.

At that moment, save for one final secret, they knew everything about each other.
