But Sienna Hale cut her off again. "Besides, didn’t I tell you not to come here anymore? Why didn’t you listen, showing up on your own again?"

She had told her not to come for fear of disturbing Seth’s rest. Yesterday, Autumn had promised so readily that she absolutely wouldn’t come and bother Seth. She never expected that Autumn Shelby, who had always seemed so obedient, would also resort to saying one thing and doing another.

Seeing Sienna Hale’s harsh tone, Autumn Shelby seethed with hatred but could only apologize. "I’m sorry, Aunt Sienna. I just came to see Seth for a moment. I’ll leave as soon as I know he’s all right."

Sienna Hale sighed, glanced at Seth Quinn, and added, "Well, you’ve had your look. I’m about to leave, so you can come back with me."

"I..." Autumn Shelby naturally didn’t want to leave. ’She had driven all the way here early in the morning. Was she really going to leave after just one glance?’

’If she could just manage to take over caring for Seth right now, they would be together day and night. Seth would surely start to remember all the little details of their twenty-plus years together. And maybe he’d suddenly realize she was a better match for him than Clara Grant.’

"What is it? Didn’t you say you’d leave after a single glance?" Sienna Hale frowned.

’Autumn Shelby felt something was off about Sienna Hale today. She had never been this impatient with her before. Especially since she’d returned—after Sienna learned about her depression and all the suffering she had endured—she had doted on her even more.’

’But today, her attitude and tone were highly unusual.’

’Then again, maybe it was just that Clara Grant had upset her, and she was taking it out on her a little.’

At this thought, Autumn Shelby couldn’t resist speaking up. "But Aunt Sienna, I feel that Seth should be cared for by someone who truly understands him. Clara Grant may be Seth’s wife, but they’ve only known each other for a short while. She can’t possibly know him thoroughly."

"That means her efforts to care for Seth will be twice as hard for half the results. And while I may not have any official standing and might not seem to have the right, I have known Seth for over twenty years. I’m the one who understands him best. I know what he wants before he even has to say it. So, I am better suited to take care of Seth."

When Clara Grant heard Autumn mention she was Seth Quinn’s wife, she panicked. She instinctively glanced at Sienna Hale. ’Yesterday, on an impulse, she had told Autumn Shelby that she and Seth Quinn were already married, but they were still hiding that fact from his parents.’

’Even though Sienna Hale had referred to her as the young mistress in front of Mrs. Cheney, that was likely just an acknowledgment of her position. She didn’t know they had already gotten their marriage license.’

’Now that Autumn Shelby had blurted it out, would Sienna Hale think they were disrespecting his parents by hiding something so important? Would she start to resent her all over again?’

So, the moment Autumn Shelby finished speaking, Clara Grant hurriedly spoke up, trying to divert Sienna Hale’s attention.

"Miss Shelby, taking care of a patient isn’t about how well you know them, is it? People hire professional nurses, right? Do the nurses know the patients personally? They still manage to provide excellent care. Besides, Seth’s only issue right now is his mobility. He can still speak just fine."

Her words made Autumn Shelby grit her teeth, but she forced herself to hold it in. She looked pleadingly at Sienna Hale, hoping for her support.

But to her surprise, Sienna Hale simply shook her head. "She’s right. You’re coming back with me."

Autumn Shelby’s hopes were shattered. She resentfully parted her lips, but ultimately held her tongue and just nodded at Sienna Hale.
