Chapter 61: Deal Reminder

The morning was calm and peaceful. The sun’s golden glow lit up the sky, accompanied by the melodic chirping of birds and, most importantly, the sweet aroma of Marina’s special banana pancakes wafting through the air.

Nicholas sat at the table, patiently waiting for breakfast. He couldn’t afford to miss Marina’s special pancakes.

"Big brother! Breakfast is ready! Breakfast is ready!" Katie yelled as she bolted out of the kitchen with a plate of pancakes in her hands.

"Careful, you don’t want to drop them!" Marina cautioned as she followed behind Katie, carrying a jug filled with fruit juice.

"If I fall, big brother will catch me!" Katie declared. freёwebnovel.com

"That’s not a reason to fall. You’re abusing your brother’s powers," Marina said with a chuckle.

"Well, I would catch her," Nicholas replied with a smile as he glanced at Marina.

"You’re spoiling her. She’s turning thirteen soon, but we’ve spoiled her so much she still acts like she’s nine," Marina said, facepalming as she placed the jug on the table.

"Katie is a good girl! Katie is not spoiled!" Katie retorted, glaring at Marina with her cheeks puffed in indignation.

Marina chuckled.

"Yes, yes. Katie is a good girl. But you should still be careful so you don’t hurt yourself."

She took a seat before continuing, "Also, when will she be starting school?"

Marina turned to Nicholas.

"I’ve been making arrangements for that. She should probably start before the end of the week," Nicholas replied as he dug into the pancakes.

’It’s a good thing she’s not against the idea as much as she was before.’

Nicholas was glad Marina no longer seemed as bothered by the thought of Katie attending the Hero Academy.

She felt safer knowing Katie had awakened an ability of her own and would be capable of protecting herself.

Though Nicholas knew there was more to it than that.

That guy she’s been meeting lately. I’m sure she wants more time to spend with him too. With Katie gone, she’ll have it.

Nicholas took a sip of his juice.

His brows twitched at the thought of the man.

Over the past few weeks, while he’d been staying at home, he’d learned about Marina’s new relationship.

He didn’t have any issue with it.

Marina was old enough to make her own decisions, but there was just one problem.

The man smiled too much.

Nobody smiled that much.

Nicholas was convinced he was hiding something.

Marina claimed he was simply friendly.

Nicholas found that explanation even more suspicious.

He was still lost in thought when the doorbell rang.

Marina turned toward Katie.

"Go check who’s at the door."

"I’m on it!"

Katie leaped from her chair and hurried toward the entrance.

Peeking through the door, she immediately spotted Selena.

"Big sis Selena!"

Katie practically jumped with excitement.

"Katie, how are you doing?" Selena asked with a bright smile, ruffling the little girl’s hair as she stepped inside.

"Katie is fine! Come eat delicious pancakes with us!"

"Wa—"

Before Selena could respond, Katie had already grabbed her hand and begun dragging her toward the dining room.

"Good morning," Selena greeted, glancing toward Marina.

"Good morning. What a pleasant surprise. What brings you here today?" Marina asked, raising a brow.

Selena glanced toward Nicholas.

He hadn’t even acknowledged her presence and remained completely focused on his breakfast.

’This brat. He knows exactly what he’s doing.’ A vein bulged slightly on her forehead.

"Oh, don’t mind me. I’m only here to speak with him," Selena replied with a stiff smile as she placed a hand on Nicholas’s shoulder.

"Do you have a moment?"

Nicholas let out a long sigh as he stood up and walked to the side with Selena.

In the corner of the room, Selena glared at Nicholas her gaze furious, "You’ve been ignoring my calls, and you haven’t gone on any mission for the past two weeks! What’s wrong with you?" Selena asked with a hushed voice.

"Last I checked, we weren’t dating and neither were we married, so I’m not obligated to pick a call from you" Nicholas replied back bluntly.

Selena’s face lit up red, as embarrassment clashed with annoyance, "Who said anything about being married! What does that have to do with you picking my calls? You—!" her words hung up in frustration as she curled her fist, toning her voice down, "And what about your missions? Why haven’t you gone on any missions?"

"I’ve not been paid yet, I only work when I get paid" Nicholas replied as he calmly walked past Selena, "If that’s all, I’ll have to finish up my breakfast now"

"About your payment, Dana is making arrangements for that, but there’s an important mission that I’ll need your help with."

Nicholas glanced at her, "Pay me first, I’ll listen to you when you do, as for now. I have to prepare a few things for Katie’s school" Nicholas said as he walked back to the dinning room.

"Recently strange creatures have been roaming the streets and their numbers are rapidly increasing and it’s not too far from here. The association is already gathering a group of heroes to deal with the issue, but the creatures are unending, we’re suspecting it’s an impure that’s bringing all these strange creatures. But we can’t find them. I’ll pay you if I have to, just come over so we can know what’s going on before it gets worse" Selena said with a sigh.

Nicholas paused for a second, glancing at Selena from the side of his eyes, "Send the money to my account. I’ll be there in a few minutes, I just have to deal with something very important first"

"That’s strange wondering what’s so important that you’d actually quit on money for even a second" Selena said squinting her eyes as though trying to see through the illusion in front of her.

"It’s just someone I have to remind of our little deal" Nicholas thought as he looked at Katie with a smile.
