Chapter 122: A Raid?!

A light breeze blew against Hajime’s face as he and Megumi walked down the street. They’d already gotten the groceries and they were heading home, side by side as usual. This is not an unusual setting for Hajime since Megumi would sometimes accompany him home. She’d always have Franz with her though, which is nice since it would just make the atmosphere more awkward if he wasn’t there.

An awkward silence befell Hajime and Megumi as they walked, but it didn’t make them feel uncomfortable at all. Megumi twiddled her thumbs as she tried to come up with a topic. She wanted to ask Hajime about his parents, about the incident, about his sister... pretty much about anything.

But she wasn’t sure whether she should ask something that’s so private. That’s why the only thing she did was bite her lips and walk alongside Hajime as they made their way home.

"We bought a lot, are you sure about this? What do you even want to eat for dinner?" Hajime asked out of nowhere, snapping Megumi back to reality as she turned around with a flustered face.

"Ah- er... anything. You do have a fridge, right? We can stock everything leftover there." Megumi simply stated as she walked slightly ahead of Hajime. Why was she overthinking things, asking herself if she should question Hajime with such insensitive questions. "And no, we’re going to eat what you want." Megumi cheerily said.

Hajime averted his gaze from Megumi before rubbing his nose. They were friends, and he is her bodyguard, nothing more nothing less. But recently, his feelings towards her have gotten warmer, somewhat weird... and her simple gestures which didn’t affect him before now made his heart skip a beat. Even her simple smile which she just recently flashed towards him made his face redden in a snap of a finger. Fortunately, the setting sun was directly beaming on his face, and the redness on his face was covered by the reflection of the orange hue from the sun.

They were nearing Hajime’s abode and Hajime was still trapped in his thoughts. It was obvious that he had developed feelings for Megumi... but somehow, he didn’t want to accept it. How could he develop feelings for her? The only reason why she befriended him was—

— wait... how did we become friends anyways? Hajime asked himself. It all happened so naturally as if fate was playing tricks on them. (Sadly it’s not, it’s not the work of fate, but the work of their homeroom teacher, an expert wingman by the name of Akamine-sensei)

"Hajime?" Megumi called out as she stopped short, her gaze fixated on Hajime’s house on the other side of the road.

"What is it?" Hajime absent-mindedly responded, wondering why Megumi called her out of the blue. His eyes then looked up.

And then he saw it... fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓

His house. At first glance, Hajime thought that nothing was wrong with it and that Megumi was just overreacting. But after he noticed that the door was ajar and that some of the windows had been broken, Hajime’s composure disappeared in an instant. He immediately picked up the pace and went inside the house. The first thought that occurred in Hajime’s mind was the deed to the house. He had hidden it somewhere where no one would be able to find it.

But if someone with the intent to steal it broke into the house, it’s only a matter of time before they’d get it. That’s why Hajime was worried about it. He didn’t care about anything else in the house, but the deed was important to him.

As soon as he entered the house, he looked around to see if the thieves were still at home.

SWISH!

Hajime ducked as a bat suddenly flew over his head, missing him by a hair’s breadth. If it hadn’t been for his quick reflexes, he’d have been knocked dead cold as soon as he entered the house. After the duck, Hajime rolled on the ground and grabbed whatever item he could throw at his attacker. He was able to grab a pan, and he immediately threw it at the assailant’s nose, breaking it in flash.

"Aghk~!" The man let out a pained groan as the pan broke his nose in an instant, making his nose bleed in a gross way. "You’ll pay for this!" The man grunted his teeth.

Hajime then sensed that someone was approaching him from behind. There was no time to lose. Hajime instantly got up, pivoted on his left foot, and unleashed a jab that landed squarely on someone’s diaphragm. The second one wheezed as the punch took the air out of him. "Who are you guys?" Hajime gritted his teeth. "I’m going to call the authorities on you! This is breaking and entering!"

"Heh, this kid’s saying he’s going to call the police." Another man appeared, walking towards Hajime while flashing an ID in hand. "You mean us? We’re the police." One of the men said. "Guys, take care of him."

"What is this madness?!" Hajime snapped. He had never broken any laws so it doesn’t warrant the raid and the breaking and entering that the police did.

But before he could react, the police then pointed a gun at him. "Now, where’s the deed to the house?" The police said, unlocking the safety of the handgun. There was a sinister look on his face, something that the police would never wear in the line of duty.

"HAJIME!" Someone screamed from behind him.

As Hajime turned around, his pupils dilated. There she was, Megumi, struggling as one of the policemen held her down. One of them was tying a towel around her mouth to stop her from screaming. (She had been screaming for quite some time now, but Hajime didn’t hear her since he was too focused on the fight.)

"Oi! We don’t mess with the girl. We’re bringing him to the boss. She’s the son of that guy right, Kikuchi Koji?" One of the men said. "I heard he’s filthy rich."
