Chapter 9: Monsters to be killed
The first monster to rush at Ren was a snake, over twenty feet long and thick bodied, its scales gleaming under the soft ambient light of the cave, red eyes glowing as it surged forward across the stone.
Ren didn’t react the way he had the first time. There was a reckless confidence settling into him now, something earned in the last few minutes that hadn’t existed before. He watched the serpent’s approach with something almost like curiosity rather than fear, tracking the way its thick coils gathered and released against the cave floor, building speed.
When the snake closed the gap, he flapped his wings once, just enough to lift him a few feet and put real distance between them before it could strike, then dropped back down and came in fast with a Claw Strike. The arc was clean, precise, his claws moving with a sharpness that still felt slightly foreign on this new, larger body. The snake’s head separated from its body in a single motion, hitting the cave floor with a heavy, final thud, the rest of its length going slack a half second later.

"One down," Ren said, already turning toward the next set of approaching eyes, humming something tuneless and cheerful under his breath like this was just another day at the office. He gave the dead serpent one quick glance, decided it could wait, and kept his attention on the tunnel mouth where more movement was stirring.
A twin-headed snake came next, both heads weaving independently, scales noticeably thicker than the last one’s had been. It slithered into the chamber low and fast, splitting its attention between watching him and watching the space around him, clearly more cautious than its predecessor.
Ren didn’t bother with fire this time, not wanting to waste a potential meal as ash, and instead darted in low, claws raking across one neck while he twisted hard to dodge the second head’s strike entirely, feeling the rush of air from its near miss against his side.
It hissed in fury, both heads rearing back, and lunged together this time, forcing him to drop and roll under the combined strike, coming up fast on its flank. It took two more exchanges, quick and brutal, before both heads finally stopped moving, the long body collapsing into a heavy coil on the cave floor.

He ate that one on the spot, tearing through the thick scales with growing ease, the meat tougher than the wolf’s had been but satisfying in a way that felt deeply correct to whatever instincts ran beneath his thoughts now.

"Ooh, neat," Ren said, flexing experimentally, feeling something subtly different settle across his own scales, a faint new density to them, like armor quietly slotting itself into place beneath the surface. "Free armor upgrade. I love this evolution path so much."
He moved on through the chamber, following the natural slope of the tunnel deeper, when a mole-like creature burst up from the cave floor without warning, dirt and loose rock scattering in every direction. It was blind, snapping wildly with oversized claws built for digging rather than fighting, swinging in wide, clumsy arcs that searched for him by sound alone.
Ren dodged the first swipe easily, flapped up just out of reach as a second swing cut through empty air beneath him, then dropped straight down with both claws extended, driving them into the back of its neck before it ever managed to properly locate him.

He pressed forward, the tunnel widening slightly ahead, and a porcupine-type monster emerged from a side passage, bristling with quills that launched the moment it sensed him close, a rapid volley clattering against the stone where he’d been standing a heartbeat earlier.
He banked hard, gliding low under the second volley, feeling the new density of his scales shrug off a glancing quill that would have stuck him before. He came back around fast, low to the ground, and ended it with a quick, decisive bite to the back of its neck before it could reload another volley.

By the time the bear-type lumbered out of the largest tunnel mouth, easily the biggest threat he’d faced down here, broad and heavily muscled with claws like curved knives and a low, rolling growl that shook loose dust from the ceiling, Ren felt something close to actual excitement rather than fear.
"Alright, big guy," he said, rolling his shoulders, claws flexing at his sides. "Let’s see what you’ve got."
The bear charged, faster than its size suggested, the ground trembling under its weight. Ren glided low under its first swing, the claws passing close enough to feel the wind off them, then raked Claw Strike hard across its exposed side as he passed. It roared, twisting fast to follow him, but he used Glide again to put himself behind it before it could fully turn, landing a fast series of strikes against the back of its neck until its legs finally buckled beneath it.

He ate well that night, working through the bear’s carcass with patient satisfaction, the tune he’d been humming earlier returning, slightly off-key but cheerful nonetheless, echoing faintly through the now quiet chamber.

The final notification chimed quietly while he ate, the cascade from everything combined finally settling into place.

Ren looked over the numbers with quiet satisfaction, the panic from earlier feeling like a distant memory now. "Okay. That actually went pretty well, all things considered."
He picked his way through the rest of the tunnel network with Dragon Vision lighting the way, full and content, the cave finally beginning to feel less like a death trap and more like home turf, until finally, in the dim distance ahead, a thin shaft of natural daylight cut through the dark.
A way out.
"Finally," he muttered, breaking into an eager trot toward the light. "I have had enough of caves for one lifetime, thank you very much."
